ZTE Merit - Straight Talk's First Android Phone on AT&T Now Available for $99.99
A new Android phone, the ZTE 990G Merit, showed up on the Straight Talk
website today for $99.99 with free shipping. The Merit is the first Straight Talk's branded Android phone to run on the AT&T network. It's the same basic phone as the AT&T Avail which has been available as a GoPhone for a couple of months. AT&T charges $129.99 for the Avail, $30 more than Straight Talk's price.
The Merit has relatively good specs for an entry level Android phone. The 5 MP auto-focus camera and 3.5 inch HVGA (320 x 480) screen are both a cut above the typical $100 Android phone. The phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which the latest Android OS to ship on any entry level phone. The newest Android OS, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is currently only available on phones selling for 4400 or more, unsubsidized.
There are quite a few user reviews of AT&T's version of the Merit on Walmart, Mobiledia, CNET and Amazon, with most of them favorable. There's also a 13 minute video review on PhoneArena. Users generally give the Avail high marks for the camera, screen and general performance. The biggest gripe Avail users seem to have is with battery life. But when it comes to specifics about the battery the main complaint is that you have to charge it every day and if you talk or surf the web continuously for five hours the battery is dead, both of which are true of almost any Android phone.
Up to now, in order to use Straight Talk's $45/month unlimited plan with an Android phone on the AT&T network, you had to buy an AT&T phone and a Straight Talk AT&T SIM and configure the phone's data and MMS settings manually Which could be a hassle as AT&T likes to lock those settings down. The Merit comes preconfigured for Straight Talk so it should work right out of box, which is a huge advantage for most people.
Here are the Merit's specifications:
Dimensions: (H × W × D) 4.57" (H) x 2.46" (W) x 0.5" (D)
Weight: 4.48 oz. (with battery)
Display: 3.5" 320 x 480 (HVGA)
Camera: 5 megapixel camera with auto focus
Internal memory ROM: 512MB, RAM: 512MB
Removable memory card support: micro SD card, max. capacity 32GB
Battery: 1,500 mAh
Continuous idle time: Up to 9 days and 9 hours
Continuous talk time: About 5 hours
OS: Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Sensors: Gravity, tilt and shake
Google Android apps (YouTube, Google Maps with navigation and voice guidance, Google Talk, Google Play Store, Android Music Player, etc.)
Processor: 600 Mhz
Straight Talk has an interactive tutorial for the Merit online. The User manual is also available (download PDF). To purchase the ZTE Merit visit www.shopstraightalk,com.

Tracfone LG 500g With 1200 Minutes and Triple Minutes for Life - $79.99 at HSN
HSN.com has a new Tracfone TMFL (triple minutes for life) deal on the popular LG 500g QWERTY candybar phone. For $79.99 (plus $5.95 for shipping) you get the phone, TMFL, 1200 minutes good for a year and a case and car charger.
The LG 500g is a compact and lightweight "Blackberry style" QWERTY phone with 1.2 MP camera, alarm clock, voice recorder and support for mobile Java games and apps. A lot of people like this phone including the "Prepaid Phone Guy", PBUSHX2 who calls it his preferred Tracfone QWERTY phone.
This is an excellent deal if you are a fan of the LG 500g. The phone alone normally sells for $19.99 on tracfone.com without TMFL or a case or car charger. The 1200 minutes is delivered in the form of a 400 minute one year card (which tripped is 1200 minutes) that normally sells for $99.99. The charger and case are generic items that are worth about $5 together. So even without the TMFL the package is worth at least $125. When Tracfone briefly offered TFML cards, they were $29.99 which brings the total to $155, almost double what HSN is charging for the bundle! Buy at hsn.com.

T-Mobile Mobile Broadband Price Reduction
Today T-Mobile announced new lower pricing for prepaid mobile broadband plans that will go into effect Sunday May 20th at t-mobile.com
, T-Mobile stores and other retailers selling T-Mobile broadband products. There's also an exclusive Walmart deal described after the break. Here's a table comparison of the old and new pricing.
But wait there's more. TMONews found a page on walmart.com with a special deal on the new $35 3.5 GB refills. It what appears to be a Wally World exclusive, if you buy the $35 refill, and only the $35 one, from Walmart it's good for 60 days rather than the usual 30.
These plans are intended for USB wireless modems, wireless hotspots and tablets. They reportedly work in phones too but for data only, no voice, SMS or MMS. You could however use VOIP for calling and Google Voice for texts.

Another Nail in the Boost iDEN Coffin - Phone Sales and Activations Ending Soon
Inside Sprint Now, a blog by a Sprint customer care employee, is reporting that as of this Friday, May 18th, iDEN phones will no longer be available from Sprint.com, telesales, customer care and the Sprint Wireless Advantage Club. The article doesn't mention boostmobile.com but it includes the statement that "After Friday, the only place to purchase an iDEN device will be a 3rd Party retail store that carries Boost Mobile devices." which makes it sound like iDEN phones will be gone from boostmobile.com after May 18th too.
The Inside Sprint Now post contains a scan of a frequently asked questions document that's going out to Boost retailers. The document repeats much of what we have already heard about "surplus" iDEN towers being shut down now through early July as well as the total shutdown of the iDEN network midyear 2013. But it also includes several new nuggets of information
- After July 10, 2012 Boost will no longer activate new Boost accounts. Existing Boost iDEN subscribers will still be able to switch between iDEN phones until service is shut down in the middle of next year.
- Boost dealers selling iDEN phones should warn customers that the iDEN network is projected to be shut down in mid-2013. If the customer is not a "heavy" walkie-talkie user, the dealer should suggest that they switch to a CDMA phone.
- There may be offers at a latter date to encourage users to switch to a CDMA phone.
- The document acknowledges that there are no Boost CDMA push to talk (PTT - Walkie Talkie) phones and suggest steering PTT users to an Android CDMA phone running one of the "multiple walkie-talkie apps in the Google Play Store".
My take is that it looks like the iDEN shutdown is proceeding on schedule. Boost needs be doing all they can to discourage customers from buying iDEN phones and warn them that iDEN will be shut down in a year. Ceasing sales of iDEN phones on boostmobile.com is a good good. Hopefully dealers, including online sites, that continue to sell iDEN phones will warn customers about the shutdown.
I'm concerned that there are still no Boost CDMA PTT phones available. I'm stating to worry that Boost isn't going to release a CDMA PTT phone at all.
The Android app solution is not a good substitute for dedicated PTT phones. None of the current Android walkie talkie apps can connect with iDEN PTT phones or with the CDMA Direct Connect phones either. Sprint is promising to release an inter-operable Android PTT app soon, but says it will only work on "select" Android phones. How well it will work and if it will work on Boost Android phones is unknown. Plus an Android PTT app does nothing for Boost iDEN pay as you go users as Android phones are not allowed on pay as you go. iDEN's time has passed and it needs to be gone to make room for modern technologies but Boost iDEN users should not lose PTT regardless of whether they are on Unlimited or pay as you go,

Updated: Virgin Mobile Confirns that Optimus Elites Activated before May 27th Will Be Grandfathered
Virgin Mobile's LG Optimus Elite is launching tomorrow. Its a nice upgrade to the Optimus V; bigger 3.5 vs 3.2 inch screen, better 5 MP vs 3.2 MP camera, faster 800 Mhz vs 600 Mhz processor and it's thinner and lighter.
But because it is launching after May 1st, upgrading to the Elite will bump users on grandfathered $25 and $40 plans up to $35 or $45, respectively. Or will it? There's an interesting message thread on Virgin Mobile's Facebook page where a user asked "Can you get the Optimus Elite and stay granddfathered?" and the official Virgin Mobile account replied "As long as you purchase the phone before the 27th you're in the clear! :) ^Andrea E"
The same Virgin Mobile representative repeated essentially the same message three times. So it looks like you might be able to upgrade to the Elite and keep your grandfathered plan. In addition, a Howard Forums user is reporting that he emailed Virgin Mobile support and got a reply stating "If you make the phone swap before May 27th you will be able to keep your grandfathered plan even if you swap to a smart phone like the Optimus Elite."
Although the Elite isn't supposed to be available until May 15th, its starting to show up in some Walmarts. A user who managed to buy one reported on Howard Forums that he was able to activate the phone and during activation he asked about grandfathering and was told that as long as the activation was completed before the 27th he would keep his grandfathered plan.
My take is that you if you activate before an Elite before the 15th, you might be grandfathered, or you might not. The customer support reps who are saying the phone is grandfathered are near the bottom of the corporate food chain. They could be misinformed or misinterpreting some internal communication document. Virgin's official public communication says:
It might also be tricky finding an Elite. The Virgin Mobile website
was taking pre-orders but now says "We've reached our limit for pre-orders on this device. Check back on: 05/15/2012" The Elite hasn't shown up on the Amazon
, Walmart,
Best Buy
or Radio Shack
sites either so your best bet might be a nearby Walmart store.
Update 15-May-2012: Jayne Wallace who is in media relations for Virgin Mobile, has left a comment below confirming that customers activating the Optimus Elite before May 27 on a grandfathered plan can remain on that plan. The Virgin Mobile website is accepting orders now.

Starting May 27, 2012, if you are using the $25, $40, or $60 Beyond Talk plan and you upgrade to a Beyond Talk Smartphone launched after May 1, 2012*, you will need to switch to the $35, $45, or $55 Beyond Talk plan. When you switch plans, you will need to pay for your new plan and you will lose any minutes, messages, and money in your balance. This will also change your monthly payment date. So if you are considering upgrading to a new smartphone, we recommend that you wait until right before your next monthly payment date to activate.Which is vague enough to be interpreted either way. If you are the gambling type and want to try upgrading the an Elite before the 27th, go for it. However it is a gamble and you may end up losing your grandfathered status.
*The following smartphones launched before May 1, 2012 and are therefore not subject to the new device upgrade rules at this time: VentureTM, LG ® OptimusTM Slider, HTC ® Wildfire STM, Motorola TriumphTM, LG ® Optimus VTM, Blackberry ® CurveTM 8530.

US Cellular/Alltel U-Prepaid Now Available - Here's What it Costs
Last month US Cellular and Alltel announced a joint venture to relaunch Alltel's U Prepaid brand. The initial press release didn't specify the launch date or include any information about phone or plan pricing. Over the weekend, a new U Prepaid website popped up at uprepaid.net with phone and plan prices, which are pretty compete. There are three feature phones and an Android smartphone. Depending on whether you enter a zip code in Alltel or US Cellular territory, the plans are a little different. Here's what shows up if I use a US Cellular zipcode (53213)
$19.88 Samsung Chrono flip phone with a 2 inch 240x320 px screen, VGA (.3 MP) camera and no music player.
$29.88 LG Saber QWERTY candybar with 2.2 inch 176x220 px screen, VGA (.3 MP) camera and no music player. This appears to be the same phone as TracFone's LG 501c.
$49.99 LG Attune touchscreen with slide out QWERTY keyboard, 2.8 inch 240x400 px screen, 1.3 MP camera, SD card slot supporting up to 16 GB cards and a MP3 music player.
$129.88 Samsung Repp Android 2.3 phone with 3.2 inch 320x480 px screen, 3 MP camera, SD card slot supporting up to 32 GB cards, MP3 music player, WiFi and EVDO Rev0 3G.
There are four feature phone and two smartphone plans:
In Alltel areas like zipcode 30286, the phones are the same except for the LG Attune which Alltel calls the LG Exchange but which appears to be the same phone. Alltel users also get a cheaper overage and per use data rate15¢/MB instead of 50¢/MB.
Nowhere on the site does it say if the daily plans are charged every day or only on days that you use the phone. I suspect it's everyday, as the only on days used option would be a selling point that I'd expect U Prepaid to mention.
U Prepaid phones are only available at Walmart stores in Alltel and US Cellular markets, which are mainly located in the Midwest, Southeast, New England ad Pacific Northwest. There's a store locator on the U Prepaid site. Phone's are not currently available on walmart.com.
I'm a little disappointed that there' are no U Prepaid pay as you go plan, but the Monthly plans are quite competitive. If the U Prepaid coverage map is to believed it looks like there is no extra charge roaming just about everywhere, which makes U Prepaid a great deal especially if you travel in remote areas frequently. $50/month with a real 2 GB of data is a much better deal than Verizon's $80 for 1 GB or Straight Talk's $45 plus tax for "unlimited" data that gets arbitrarily cut off if you pass some hidden cap that's probably less than 2GB.

Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week May 13 - May 19
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday feature listing all current prepaid phone deals in one place.
The deal of the week is the Verizon Samsung Illusion
Android phone for $149.99 at BestBuy stores and bestbuy.com
. This phone was just released last week for $169.99 so getting $20 off so soon after release is unusual.
The Illusion is notable for having a 1 Ghz processor which is faster than what's typically found at this price point. It also has a 3.5 inch 320 x 480 px screen, 3 MP camera and a trendy curved glass screen. The only downside is that the phone only works with Verizon's $80/month unlimited prepaid smartphone plan.
Other prepaid phone deals this week: (Except as noted all are available both online and in stores).

The deal of the week is the Verizon Samsung Illusion
The Illusion is notable for having a 1 Ghz processor which is faster than what's typically found at this price point. It also has a 3.5 inch 320 x 480 px screen, 3 MP camera and a trendy curved glass screen. The only downside is that the phone only works with Verizon's $80/month unlimited prepaid smartphone plan.
Other prepaid phone deals this week: (Except as noted all are available both online and in stores).
