US Prepaid Boom: Report - 60% of New US Mobile Service Subscriptions are Prepaid

If you are a Prepaid Phone News reader you already know that prepaid is the most cost-effective way to purchase cellphone service. But did you know that you are also part of a rapidly growing trend?

I just ran across some interesting statistics on prepaid adoption. According to a report from the New Millennium Research Council, a think tank that analyzes telecommunications and technology trends:

  • New prepaid subscriptions increased by 45% in 2010 compared with 2009*
  •
  • Three out of five (60%) new US wireless subscriptions in 2010 where prepaid. There were 8 million new prepaid subscriptions versus 4.8 million postpaid.
  •
  • By the end of 2011, 25% of US wireless subscribers will be prepaid, up from 17% in 2009 and 8% in 2006*.
  •
The US prepaid boom echoes global trends. Prepaid is the dominant type of wireless service everywhere in the world except North America. Prepaid adoption elsewhere ranges from 60% in Western Europe to 93% in Africa*.
