Updated: MetroPCS' $25/month Unlimited Talk and Text Plan - What You Need To Know

It's no longer a rumor, MetroPCS has launched an unlimited talk and text plan that costs a mere $25/month. This establishes a new low price point for unlimited plans. Before you get too excited, there are quite a few limitations and conditions attached to this plan.
  • The $25/month plan is only available at MetroPCS stores, not online.
  • There is a $10 activation fee
  • The plan is for new customers only. Existing customers can't switch to the plan except by starting a new line of service with a new phone number and a new phone.
  • The plan can only be used for voice calling and SMS text messaging. Email, IM, MMS (picture messaging) and data are not available.
  • The only add-ons allowed on the $25/month plan are $5/month for unlimited MMS and $5/month MetroGUARD phone insurance. Other extra cost features like detailed call records features and call blocking can not be added.
  • The plan can be added to an existing Family plan as a new line of service only. The $5/month family plan discount does not apply to this plan.
  • The customer must purchase one of following three seven basic phones (left to right in the image) to activate the $25 plan.
    • $59.99 Samsung Freeform III candy bar, with MP3 player and a 1.3 MP camera
    • $39.99 Kyocera Presto candy bar
    • $49.99 Huawei Pinnacle QWERTY candy bar with MP3 player and 1.3 MP camera
  • The $25./month plan is a limited time promotional offer that ends June 30, 2012. Customers can remain on the plan indefinably after June 30 the promotion ends, as long as they continue to use one of the three supported phones.
It's not all bleak, the plan does include most of the basics you would expect from a mobile phone service including voicemail, 3-way calling, caller ID and long distance. It looks like it even includes no extra cost roaming on Sprint in areas where MetroPCS doesn't have coverage.

If you can live with the restrictions, MetroPCS' $25 Plan is a great deal for someone who wants to talk and text a lot and doesn't care about fancy features. It will be interesting to see if any of MetroPCS' competitors match the $25 price point.

Update July 1, 2012: The offer has been extended "while supplies last" and four additional phones are now allowed on the $25 plan. The newly added phones are:

  • $59.99 Huawei M735 Blue touch screen with 3 MP camera and music player
  • $79.99 LG Beacon touch screen QWERTY slider with 1.3 MP camera and music player
  • $59.99 Samsung Contour flip phone
  • $69.99 LG Select flip phone with 1.3 MP camera
In addition, unlimited MMS picture messaging is now available on the $25 plan for an extra $5/month

Update: The $25 plan promotion ended July 31, 2012 and is no longer available to new subscribers. Its replacement is a new $30/month promotional plan that works with any MetroPCS feature phone. It includes unlimited talk, text and MMS (picture messaging).

    1. You would have to replace the phone with one of the three supported phones. If you want a different phone you would need to upgrade to a higher priced plan.

If you don't want to use a supported phone or upgrade you should be able to port your phone number to another carrier.

    1. If it's not a Metro number you can. The MetroPCS store should be able to handle that when you buy the phone.

As the $25 plan is only for new customers I don't think you can transfer an existing Metro number. But it doesn't hurt to ask.

  4. I currently have the 25$ plan and it just recently broke. I have a spare phone that is the exact same model. When i tried to switch the service to the spare phone they said i cant have the same 25$ plan, i have to upgrade to the 45$ plan or something. Im SO confused on why i cant keep the same plan.. Any help?

    1. That doesn't sound right.

When MetroPCS launched the $25 plan that said that anyone that who started on $25 the plan could stay on it indefinitely as they:
      1) Didn't let their service lapse for non-payment
      2) Continued to use one of the supported phones, which are the Samsung Freeform III, Kyocera Presto, Huawei Pinnacle, Huawei M735, LG Beacon, Samsung Contour and LG Select.

If your service hasn't lapsed and your replacement phone is one of the supported devices, keep calling back and/or escalating to a supervisor until you get someone who understands the rules for phone replacement on the $25 plan and will honor the commitment that Metro made to you when they sold you that plan.

  7. I believe you have to buy and switch to the new phone in a MetroPCS store to keep the $25 plan.
