PTel GSM Launches - Get a Free SIM and $40 PIN for $20!

PlatinumTel's new T-Mobile based PTel GSM service is now available online and at PlatinumTel authorized dealers.

SIM cards are $4.95 and the following plans are available:

Plan Cost Voice Minutes Texts MMS Data
Real PayGo $10/60days* 5¢/each 2¢/each 2¢/each 10¢/MB
$40 Unlimited Everything $40/30 days unlimited unlimited unlimited unlimited (throttled to 128 kbps after 250 MB)

For a limited time you can get a SIM and a $40 airtime card for $20 using the promotional code SIMWOOT40.  Using the code is a little tricky.  Here's how:
  • On the Phones page click the add to cart button. Then enter your zip code if prompted.
  • On the next page, click the picture of the SIM card to add it to the card.
  • Choose the $40 Unlimited Everything Plan and click the picture of the topup card on the next page.
  • Then click the checkout button and and enter SIMWOOT40 in the coupon code box.

Ptel has confirmed on their Facebook page that the $40 plan card can be used on the PayGo plan as well as the $40 Unlimited plan.

If you need a phone, PTel has three to choose from.

LG P999 Optimus G2X for $229.99 in white or $219.99 in black. The G2X has a 4 inch 480x800px screen, 1 Ghz dual core Tegra 2 processor and an 8 MP camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording. It runs Android 2.3. There are unofficial 4.0 (ICS) and 4.1 (JB) ROMs available although I don't know well they work.

Samsung T499 Dart for $99.99. It's a basic Android 2.1 phone with a low-res 3.1 inch, 240 x 320 px screen and a 3 MP camera.

Samsung T749 Hightlight $69.99 The Hightlight is a touchscreen non-smartphone with a 3 MP camera  and a 3 inch 240 x 400 px screen.

You can also use any T-Mobile or unlocked GSM phone with a PTel SIM.

  1. Have they confirmed that locked T-Mobile phones will work? I don't see it on their website. Meanwhile Ultra says they won't work on their network.

    2. I'd be very surprised if a T-Mobile homed MVNO SIM dedn't work in a T-Mobile SIM.

    3. Ultra and Spot sims work fine in locked Tmob phones, and they have the same coverage area (NO AT&T roaming).

    4. Just reporting what Ultra told me. I wouldn't be too surprised if they were wrong though. I didn't yet bother calling T-Mobile about unlocking because Ultra's Paygo isn't live yet. But perhaps it makes sense to go with the recognized brand that's available now, even if their data rate is higher. I usually am near wifi anyway. On the flip side it looks like PTel's PAYGO expiration times are longer.

I seem to be forming a SIM collection.

    5. I believe the only mvno Tmob-based sims that require an unlocked phone are ones that roam on AT&T. Example, Tru sim and the *original* Spot Mobile sim (current ones do not, and no roaming on these). Tru is not like a regular mvno. They have roaming agreements with ATT and Tmob, but default to Tmob where available. I have not tried Solavei, which advertises roaming.

    1. 1. Ptel PINs expire one year from date of purchase. Read the terms of service and see the Ptel Facebook page answer by Ptel.
      2. Ptel $40 monthly plans can be used for 30 days from the date you add them to your account.
      3. Ptel $40 refills can be used for 150 days from the date you add them to your Pay-Go account.

  8. Clarify one thing: not use out the $40, but use the $40 PIN to refill your account within 60 days.

    1. 1. Ptel PINs are good for one year. You have to add them to your account within one year of purchase date.
      2. This applies to the old PINs and the new Ptel PINs, like the new $40 ones.
      3. So, if you want to use your $40 PIN, you have to activate a Ptel SIM within one year, and add the PIN to your new account. You could also add the PIN to any other Ptel SIM account you have previously activated.

I want to order a prepaid sim, and tried to use the code SIMWOOT40 as decribed above. Doesnt work. Am I doing something wrong or is it no longer valid?

    thanks

    1. SIMWOOT40 has expired. There's a new code, PTEL25SD that's good for 25% off SIM or phone plus airtime purchases.
