Android Jelly Bean Now Available For Boost and Virgin Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II

A PrepaidPhoneNews reader let me know that Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is now available for the Virgin Mobile Galaxy SII through the Samsing Kies PC software. According to Samsung's support page for the Boost Mobile S II the update is also available for the Boost version of the phone.

The only way to get the Jelly Bean upgrade is directly from Samsung. It must be installed using a Windows or Apple PC. The update is not expected to be available as an over the air download directly to the phone.

If you have Samsung's Kies installed, connect your phone to your PC with a USB cable and launch Kies. When Kies starts it should notify you that the update is available and prompt you to install it.

If you don't have Kies, it's available here for Windows and Mac OS. You can also download the update bundled together with Kies from Samsung's support pages: Virgin Mobile S II support page, Boost Mobile Galaxy S II support page.

Here's what's new in Jelly Bean for the S II:
"Project Butter" performance and stability improvements, Google Now, new TouchWiz Nature UX user interface from the Galaxy S III, Samsung’s S Cloud services, improved camera controls, a new lockscreen, Samsung's new Direct Call, Smart Stay and Pop-up Play features, some extra notification toggles, two Home screen modes and some new widgets.

  1. I'm having a hard time updating this on my virgin mobile phone it seems like kies doesn't connect with my phone at all when I try. I updated my wife and mother in laws galaxy s2 fine without a problem. Only difference is their phones are boost mobile. I tried reinstalling kies on my windows computer and trying ever single different solution to having connection problems but to no prevail. Is there any other way I can update it?

    1. The firmware download will probably show up on xda-developers.com or sammobile.com eventually.

However it's much safer to use Kies. Things to try:

Be sure that USB debug mode is OFF. Kies will give a connection error if it's on. (Settings > Developer options > USB debugging)

If that's not it, Samsung Chat support is supposed to be pretty good. Click the Live Chat link on the Virgin Mobile Galaxy S II support page.

    2. I had a problem downloading Samsung Kies software when a software update was needed for kie's and could access the Kies so I completely uninstall Samsung Kies and reinstalled and then the update for Kies software worked fine just do not touch anything. Two I had a failed first attempt with doing a software update for my father's Virgin Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 It got to the part where it was downloading to my father's smartphone but the percentage did not move and got a error so I clicked okay on the error it had and troubleshooted the issue then I disconnected the usb cord from my laptop then pressed/hold the power button on the Smartphone ( it has a Green robot and downloading do not turn off) do not worry about that if the process never started it will not brick your phone, Power on the phone wait for it to boot up, connect your smartphone and try again it should work it did for me. Hope this help's

  3. Hey Dennis. I do have a Boost related question. If the DoJ okays the Softbank/Sprint deal, does that mean there no longer be ZTE or possible future Huawei products coming to any of Sprint's prepaid divisions?

    1. I don't think the DoJ has any problem with Chinese manufacturer's phones, just their mobile network gear so ZTE and Huawei phones are likely to still be available.

    1. No you have to use the update intended for your variant of the phone. Using the wrong update file could brick the phone. The safe way to update any version of the S II is with Samsung Kies. If you connect your phone to Kies it will tell you if an update is available and let you install it if one is.
