Lycamobile Extends Promotional Plan Pricing Until June 30

Lycamobile updated their website today to indicate that the current $10 off monthly plans promotion has been extended until June 30, 2013. The promotion was originally supposed to end April 30.

Lyca has also extended its unlimited international calling promotion until April 30. It provides unlimited calls to up to 10 unique numbers in 50 countries on the promotionally priced $29/month plan. The promotional $39 plan includes unlimited calls to 65 countries (also limited to 10 unique numbers per month). As part of the promotion, both plans also include a $10/month credit toward international calls that aren't covered by the unlimited offer.

Lyca is new to the US but is well established in Europe where it has 20 million customers in 16 countries, making it the largest European MVNO.  Lyca SIMs are free, if ordered from their site. Unfortunately many people, myself included, did not receive SIMs that they ordered. The SIM order page has recently been redesigned so maybe the kinks have finally been worked out from the order process. I made another attempt, my third, at ordering a SIM today and will update this post if I ever get it.

Here's the current Lycamobile lineup.

  1. I called Lyca today and ordered sims; my 3/20 and 4/10 orders never arrived. They gave me a reference number for the order, and will send me 3 free sims, the maximum/order. The lady spoke perfect English with a slight accent. She read back my address, email, backup phone no., etc to make sure it was correct. The call center is in Mexico.

    1. My March 20 order finally arrived today; a dual-size sim. It was shipped to me on the East coast from NJ, so maybe Dennis will get his soon.

  2. i think you meant minimum top up for pay as you go $10 not 10cents. and didn't it use to be only $5; did they change it? have you ever found out on pay as a you go is it 2g or 3g internet speeds. also i went into a neighborhood type store that just got the manuals in last week for lyca so that is probably a main reason they are extending this promotion . my t-mobile pay as you go line was due the that day so i just paid $10 for t-mobile again since the girl at the store told me they needed a day or two to learn about lyca

    1. The online top up form on the Lyca site lets you enter any amount of 10¢ or more.

Users have reported only getting speeds of 200 to 400 Kbps on Lyca's pay as you go.

    2. I can confirm that Lycamobile is heavily throttled. I tested it with Speedtest, ookla just now in a strong Tmobile 3G area, using a 3G phone that can hit 3mbps easily. Here are my results:
      ping/ms - Down/kbps - Up/kbps
      1696-319-177
      742-397-151
      710-491-154
      1659-215-150
      1496-278-159
      1541-176-158

    3. Lyca advertises 4G data for PayGo, but they are not providing it, apparently.

    4. They do provide HSPA+. I think the slow speed is because the APN they currently provide is a UK-based server. So basically all your data is routed to UK and then back to US.

I hope at a later time they can set up a US-based access point.

  3. Do NOT throw away the SIM card surround before copying your PUK code. You must have this to register an online account. And you need it if you take too many tries to unlock a sim, if you set an unlock pin.
Also, the Lycamobile instructions say to set data roaming to Off. I could not get an mobile internet connections until I changed this to On.

    1. I checked phone number, status under Android 2.2 and it said my phone was roaming on Tmobile. Maybe that is why the phone has to be unlocked. It is roaming.

I confirmed that a 3.3 minute call to voicemail using 121 was a free call on PayGo. Nice.

  4. I noticed that receiving texts seems to be free.

    1. A couple other users reported the same thing, very nice as it reduces the effective cost of texts to 2¢/each.

    2. BEWARE!! calls that are deposited in your VM,(no answer) are charged as incoming calls (2¢ a minute) or if you roam internationally, the incoming call per minute roaming rate, even if you don't answer!!

    3. I guess you usually break even, since calls to VM are free.
If you do not want to pay for messages left for you, deactivate your Lycamobile Voicemail service: Dial *185# and push the call button.

    4. I haven't been able to disable Voicemail with *185# using a couple of nokia flip phones and an Iphone 3gs. Has anyone been able to do this?

    5. I could not disable vm using a Nokia smartphone. Screen message says command could not be completed. I will try a few variations...no option in the vm menu. Maybe CS can shut it off for you?

    6. I can't turn it off. Will email CS, since their FAQ is wrong.

    7. I did email CS, but it may not matter. I left a message on my VM, and I am *not* being charged for that call, which lasted 15 sec.
I was not charged to check this VM either.

Is anyone else seeing charges for messages left on their VM, or are you (Anon: "Beware") just referring to the Terms of Service when you say Lyca charges for messages left there? The wording in the TOS may just apply when you are roaming internationally, since it is in that section and does not appear elsewhere.

    8. I am not being charged by lycamobile when people leave messages on my voicemail. I think the BEWARE!! post above must be wrong.

  5. Within my Lycamobile account I see that I can order the $29/$19 plan, and then add more money to my account that can be used for data at 6c/mb. I did not know we could do that.

    1. Nice, thanks for sharing. I love how my readers keep discovering details of the service that Lyca CS doesn't seem to know about and aren't mentioned on the Lyca site.

  6. Finally got my SIM, had to reorder it online under a different name, took just over a week, never got the ones I ordered over the phone. The other thing I did was to order the micro (which comes in a dual mini/micro package).

  7. Did anyone try to port their number to Luca and never had problem? Mine has been too long and it has not been resolved yet.

  8. I am not being charged on the Lyca PayGo plan for calls to toll-free numbers. All other PayGo accounts I had charged me for these calls.

  9. Well, I had the worst experience with LycaMobile. After I ported my number I am not receiving incoming calls or texts. It has been more than a week since I reported they have not fixed anything. Everytime I call their customer service creates a new ticket and nothing happens after that. I will be moving away from LycaMobile from tomorrow if they do not fix it. I thought of warning you guys if you are considering LycaMobile.

  10. Hey Mod, I am shaz. I just commented on me having issues after porting. I thought I might give my Google account incase anyone wants to know more.

    1. Typical. PTel, Redpocket, Airvoice, Ultra.me are better trained at handling issues.

    1. Settings vary by phone model. Try settings from other phones or you will have to call CS.

    2. I solved this. I typed < default,* > in auth...type instead of blank.
