  1. Wow. I think this is a great plan for the price and if you have good T-mobile coverage in your area. I plan on trying it out when my contract ends in July. Competition is a great thing. Thank you for letting us know.

  2. Do you know if i can use any t-mobile locked phone with their service?

    1. Yes a locked T-Mobile phone should work.

    2. i would say no if its locked to t-mobile

    3. Phones locked to T-Mobile USA have been confirmed to work on Ultra. Locked phones do not work on Lyca.

    4. yes a locked t-mobile phone will work and it would also work on simple mobile.

  3. Abdiel you are right. Subscribers need to check T-Mobile's "pre-paid" coverage map. Use the T-Mobile website, not Ultra's coverage map. Ultra's is a 3G coverage map only. T-Mobile's has both 2G/3G and 4G coverage areas.
This is the best light-user plan I have seen at this pricepoint.
I read that only some of their locked phones will work. Don't know which ones though. Call Ultra's CS. Their CS is outsourced to Manila in the Phillipines so be ready to hear parrot scripting. Regardless they are polite and courteous.

    1. Actually, Ultra works anywhere T-Mobile has native (not roaming) coverage. The map on the Ultra site does show coverage in 2G areas such as long I-80 in central Nevada. T-Mobile's own prepaid map shows coverage in roaming areas (labeled "partner") which are not covered by Ultra.

    2. thank you very much for all the information. I plan on unlocking the phone before i try their service to improve the compatibility. Hopefully i don't have to talk much with the customer service like i do know with t-mobile. does somebody know if they have a automatic payment service? thanks again.

    3. Ultra sim works fine in my locked Blackberry and Nokia phones. The Nokia is a 2-band, 850 & 1900 phone.

  4. Dennis, check again. There is a pre-paid map in the T-Mobile website as well.
Here it is and note the 2 tabs on the top left hand side of the map area. The 3G/4G is exactly the same as Ultra's.

    1. When you zoom in on the 2G map you will see that the added coverage is "Service Partner" (roaming) areas which Ultra doesn't support. Look at zip code 69101 for example

    2. Tmobile prepaid includes voice and sms roaming. Ultra does not.

  5. If they do $19 unlimited talk & domestic text only, without any extras, it will be an awesome plan, only LycaMobile offers such a plan now.

    1. Republic Wireless $19 a month. LTE handsets coming later this year.

  6. Lyca's is only a promo until 4/30/13, then the $19 changes to $29.
Hi Dennis, Ultra's map is primarily a 3G footprint. They do not use a 2G map even though they show coverage in the 2G areas, it is because there is 3G coverage there as well.

    1. Does anyone knows if Lyca's $19 plan will be grandfathered? If not, its really a waste of time even trying them, at $29 they are totally uncompetitive compare to Ultra, Spot, and even AT&T MVNO's.

    2. Best to contact Lyca on that.

  7. my only concern with this plan would be on the pay as you go option if i ever need additional voice minutes. does anybody know how this might work with ultra mobile? I have never used a pay as you go service. thank you.

    1. Ultra hasn't said how the pay as you go minutes will be funded. With other operators you usually add a cash balance, typically $10, to your account to handle overages.

If you think you will need more than 250 minutes per month, I suggest that you wait and see. Ultra still hasn't launched the pure PAYGO plan they announced in November and reportedly still isn't selling the $10 500 MB data add-on that they have listing as available on their site for months. I don't have a lot of confidence in their ability to deliver pay as you go add-ons.

    2. thank you. i think i will wait and see like you say, because there could be times where i might need more than 250 minutes. hopefully they release the paygo options around the same time as they release this plan, because that should make the plan more attractive to people.

    3. You can add additional minutes to your plan at a cost of 2c per minute.

  8. Ultra as well has no *USSD code to check data balance on their 50MB data allotments for the $19 and $29 per month plans. When asking about it, CS is absolutely clueless as to an ETA. Now that the $19/month plan has limited minutes, it will be interesting to see how they handle that as well.
Subscribers need to see their remaining data and minutes on those plans from their phones, not the websites. I hope they figure that out.

  9. Ultra's struggling. I'd put more faith in more established and growing mvnos like Ptel and Lyca and Spot then Ultra. Hopefully they'll find their niche but so far I don't see anything special from them. Low paygo rates with big cheap add on data packages would help them do something different the other Tmobile mvnos aren't and there are a lot of them (Spot, Lyca, Ptel, Readysim, Simple, Telcel America, Net10, Straight Talk , Walmart Family, etc).

    1. *sigh*

me wishing that there was better tmobile 3G coverage in my neighborhood. then would want to switch to either this ultra thing or ptel or just tmo's $30 plan. maybe in a few months or a year's time then things may be better with the 3G for my locale. but for now, me still with AT&T GoPhone $25 for 250 minutes & unlimited text, plus $5 for 50 meg data per month to keep my (now-less-than) 1 gig data rolling over. the costs and my actual usage may turn out to be the same (whether sticking with gophone or a tmo mvno), but would like to hope that the phone calls may be better with a tmo mvno. yeah, people hate AT&T.

    2. Why do you say Ultra is struggling? What data do you have to substantiate that?

  10. I am with republic wireless and am paying around $22.00 a month after taxes for unlimited everything. They do offer SMS, but are still working on getting MMS. I have liked the service so far, but they are still in Beta and have a few things that they need to tweak. If you are a person with an ample amount of patients, then this might be for you. They definitely have been improving lately. A lot of issues people have are related to their internet connection or router and not republic wireless. Usually these problems can be resolved.
