Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week May 26 - June 1

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature listing of all current US prepaid phone deals in one place.

The deal of the week is on the Virgin Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II on sale for $199.99 at both Radio Shack and HSN. Radio Shack also has the Boost Mobile Galaxy S II version of the S II for the same $199.99 price. The regular price of both the Boost and Virgin S II models is $329.99.

The reason for the deep discounts is simple. The S II is going to be replaced by the S III in the Boost and Virgin Mobile lineups next month. But the S III is expected to be priced at around $400. While the S III does have better specs, the S II at half the price is the better deal.

Comparing the Samsung Galaxy S II with the S III, both have dual core processors, excellent 8MP cameras and Android Jelly Bean OS. The main differences are that the S III has a slightly faster processor; slightly larger and considerably higher resolution screen and LTE 4G instead of the S II's WiMAX. If cost is no object, wait for the S III, but if you are looking for a deal grab an S II before they are all gone.

Other current prepaid phone deals: (Except as noted all are available both online and in stores).

    1. Correct. Sprint and Boost are selling off remaining inventory.

    2. it would be great if the design and evo v were replaced by the evo 4G LTE i've gotten complaints about those 2 phones but the evo 4G LTE seems like a solid phone.

  2. That really is a great deal for an S2.

    1. For the same $199 price, I rather get the LG Showtime on Straight Talk.

The S2 is a dated phone despite attractive spec's.

      Delete
    2. The Showtime is the same phone as Boost's LG Venice. The camera and the single core processor are both a significant downgrade from the S II. It's also running ICS and because it's on Straight Talk will likely never be upgraded to ICS.

The one thing the Splendor has going for it is that it runs on the Verizon network which has much better rural coverage than Sprint.

    3. To Dennis B.

With all due respect, please note the following:

      (A) some people are vegans because they don't want to support factory farming of animals,

      (B) some people are environmentalists because they don't want to support America's huge waste in energy consumption (the US is 5% of the world's population, yet the US consumes 25 to 20% of the world's energy production, thus making it very hard for the rest of the world), and

      (C) some people like me who are inventors/patentholders don't want to support Samsung (Mobility) because they steal IP.

My last two basic phones and LTE mobile hotspot (all with Verizon) were made by Samsung (Mobility). As an inventor/patent holder, I absolutely refuse to buy products that support a company that steals IP. That is a personal choice.

Practically 99% of American don't share this view -- these 99% just want a cheap smartphone that is a good value without regards to the IP theft that is going on.

    4. The patent system is broken. All big tech companies patent trivial and abstract concepts and then sue each other to try to gain a competitive advantage. Samsung is no different from Apple, Google and Microsoft. They all "steal" IP from each other over and over and let the courts decide who is guilty. They have all have lost some cases and won others.

    5. I agree the patent system for tech is broken, but how do we fix it? Without patent protection, companies would not invest in R&D as much to develop new technologies that would be 'stolen.' Steve Jobs saw the desktop and mouse at the XEROX PARC research facility (over the objections of the engineers there) and copied it. Microsoft copied Apple when they created Windows, although they were clever enough in reverse engineering to avoid much damages in the Apple lawsuit. Google copied many features and the look of icons from Apple iOS. There is a often a gray line between stealing and reverse engineering tech, with many 'tests,'so the judges decide. Most lawsuits are settled, but there are too many. I do not understand how certain technologies are declared basic or fundamental in wireless tech, so the patent protection does not apply. Quite subjective, it seems.
How could the system be made better? I would like to minimize the number of patent 'trolls' who are only in it for the money damages. Maybe they should pay court costs and attorney fees when they lose, like in Britain.

  3. Dennis what phone/s do you have?

    1. I currently have:
      Motorola Photon on PlatinumTel CDMA
      Nokia N8 on T-Mobile
      LG Rumor Reflex on Boost.

      Other family members have:
LG Optimus Elite on Virgin Mobile
Samsung Galaxy Nexus S on Page Plus

    2. Dennis, did the LG Rumor replace your iDen Moto? How do you like the LG? The N8 is a beautiful phone. Is the newer Symbian Anna/Belle OS OK to use with the improvements they made?

      Delete
    3. Yes, I got the Rumor Reflex free from Boost when I migrated my iDEN account to CDMA last week. It's OK but I liked my iDEN Motorola i1 better, even with the slow iDEN network and Android 1.5.

      Pluses for the LG:
      - The capacitive touch screen is very responsive and looks reasonably good in spite of its low resolution
      - Every one of over a dozen Java apps I've tried installed without error. Most work well including Google Maps, UC Browser and Mini Commander.
-The built in email client has push capabilities and works with Gmail and the calendar syncs with Google Calendar. I get a warning screen saying that it costs 99¢ a day to use the mail app on my PayGo plan but I've never been charged.

      Minuses for the Rumor Reflex
      - Not very stable, the phone reboots itself nearly every day.
      - The email app stops updating and has to be restarted daily.
      - The slide out keyboard doesn't work with Opera Mini unless I turn on the Opera Touch keyboard, so in landscape mode the redundant touch keyboard covers half the screen.
      - The user interface has limited customization and requires wau too many taps to access frequently used features like the calendar, Java app menu and task switcher.

The N8 was a good phone in it's day but compared with any recent Android phone feels sluggish and isn't very stable. It's running Belle which is a significant improvement over earlier Symbian versions. Currently I mainly use the N8 as a camera and a backup phone in rural Northern California where T-Mobile has coverage in many areas that Sprint doesn't.

  4. You have an interesting mix of phones...

I currently have the the Samsung Galaxy Prevail on Boost Mobile with the Shrinkage plan down to $35

I been holding off for an iPhone on Boost Mobile. I am not sure how much longer I will wait. I guess Q3 time will tell.

I am thinking of switching to an iPhone with T-Mobile to go Pre-Paid. One of the features that is a huge draw for me is the wifi-calling feature. Although, it does not work with iPhones at this time. (Maybe it will be an option soon.)
I was thinking of a HTC One or a Nexus or even a Samsung Galaxy III or or IV. I tried holding the Note in a store and it just did not feel like a phone.

Most MVNO service plans work here in NYC. Except when I travel sometimes I only have wifi (no cell reception). I am spoiled with an extremely low monthly plan but as you know the phone selection is not great on Boost and the lack of GSM makes it that more difficult.

I am afraid of some MVNOs in terms if reliability. America Movil with the Data issues is one example. I know if I switch phones the plan goes up to $40 for me. As tempting as the sale for the SII this week at the Shack I think I will have to pass it up. I just do not see the point of investing in an older data technology that is going to be going on the back burner.

Your website I stumbled upon about a week ago and seems to be the best source for information. It has a lot of information and often easier to find than sorting through HowardForums.

For someone who has to watch their spending this website has been very valuable. I see more and more people making the switch to Pre-Paid monthly unlimited plans as it is becoming more and more favorable towards the consumer.

    1. My relative, a single Mom, is very tight on money but wanted an inexpensive, easy-to-use smartphone for text and email. I got her a refurb-like-new iPhone 3GS with one-year warranty for less than $150. She is on the AirVoice $35 plan (100mb) since she mostly just uses data for email. AirVoice's $40 plan with 500mb is enough to satisfy the average smartphone user. The 3GS runs the latest OS and app software, and is fast enough to do everything well. If the phone is lost, stolen or breaks after the warranty expires, it costs much less to replace than a 4 or 4S. AT&T prepaid has good coverage almost everywhere on the East coast.

  5. ATT is jumping into the prepaid arena with both feet - new brand Aio Wireless and upgrading its GoPhone options.

I will get the S3 but a while after will wait for the price to drop.

  7. I just saw an inexpensive, starter smartphone at Cowboom that would be an excellent model for a teen or first smartphone user. LG Optimus S for Sprint MVNOs like Eco, Ting, Prepayd. Only $32, and a 1-year warranty costs $5. They have dozens of these, all rated condition "5," so these might be returns or refurbs in very good shape. http://www.cowboom.com/product/754555 If you don't like the color, add a case.
