TalkForGood (TFG), a Verizon prepaid MVNO that launched just eight months ago may be out of business.
The first signs of trouble appeared three weeks ago when TFG's Plans page was replaced by the message "We are currently performing maintenance on the page you requested. Please check back later". That page was also the only place where new customers could sign up for TFG service online.
Up until a week ago, TFG was still answering their phones. They were still activating phones for callers and saying that the web site issue was a technical problem that would be fixed soon.
Then a week ago TFG stopped answering their phones and emails sent to their support address, email@example.com began bouncing. But TFG user's phones were still working and they could log to the TalkForGood online account management page to view usage and add money to their accounts. Starting yesterday, multiple TFG users have posted on HowardForums that they could no longer log into their accounts online.
At this point I don't think there's much doubt that TFG is effectively out of business. If you have a phone number at TalkForGood that you would like to keep, port it out now while you still can. It looks like someone at TFG is still processing port requests as customers and dealers are reporting that ports are going through -- slowly. Expect a port from TFG to take a day or two. To port out you just need your TFG account number and password. Luckily for everyone TFG made the account number easy to find:
- Your TFG account number is your ten digit TFG phone number.
- Your TFG password is the last four digits of your phone number.
Even if you don't care about keeping your phone number, if you want to use your TFG phone on another Verzion based operator you should port your number away from TFG. When a phone number is assigned to TFG the phone on that line is flagged as in use in the Verizon system. Phones that are in use with one MVNO can't be activated on another Verizon MVNO or even on Verizon itself. Porting clears the in use flag and allows the phone to be activated on different operator.
Some users are reporting that porting directly to PagePlus is failing but that ports through a PagePlus dealer are working. PagePlus dealer Kitty Wireless has posted on their forum that they have successfully ported several TFG numbers. Ports are free at Kitty Wireless. One Howard Forums user also reported a successful port to Selectel though an unnamed dealer. Selectel dealers that do free ports include Genius Wireless and Bat Mobile Wireless
