Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Sept 15 - Sept 21

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week listing of all current US prepaid phone deals in one place.

The deal of the week is the Virgin Mobile Apple iPhone 4 8GB for $199.99 on the Virgin Mobile site and also at BestBuy.  Until this week the iPhone 4 was priced at $349.99 and the lowest sale price was $279.99.

Straight Talk also has their iPhone 4 8GB,  which uses the Verizon network, on sale for $199.99, although the Straight Talk one is refurbished while Virgin Mobile's is brand new.

While a new iPhone under $200 is a good deal, it is a clearance price, the iPhone 4 was discontinued by Apple last week when they announced the new iPhone 5S and 5C.  Compared with Apple's least expensive current iPhone, the $359.99 iPhone 4S,  the 4 has a slower single core vs dual core processor processor and a lower 5MP vs 8MP resolution camera. The iPhone 4 also doesn't support the Siri intelligent voice assitant feature.

On the other hand, the iPhone 4 looks almost identical to the 4S. It can run the latest iOS 7 operating system and has the same high resolution 960x640 "retina" display as the 4S. Plus the iPhone 4 is eligible for Virgin Mobile's $5/month auto pay discount, which is only available with iPhones. With the discount Virgin's 300 minute, unlimited messaging and data (throttled after 2.5 GB) plan is only $30/month/

Another good deal is on Straight Talk's Huawei Ascend Y (Verizon) and Samsung Galaxy Precedent (Sprint) reconditioned Android phones, which are free with the $45 purchase of one month's service from the Straight Talk site.

Other current prepaid phone deals: (Except as noted all are available both online and in stores).

  1. Dennis, great job as always. The Virgin Mobile $30 Plan (including the $5 iPhone automatic payment discount) is 300 minutes, not 200. :)

  2. Awesome price and cheap monthly rates If Virgin gives you good reception.

  3. One other correction: The iPhone 4 and 4S did not have retina displays. The iPhone 5 was the first to feature that.

    1. Are you sure Matt? I seem to remember my Verzion iphone 4s was advertised that way, by Apple.

    2. Actually the Retina Display was introduced with the iPhone 4. The 4 and 4S have the same 57 PPD pixel density as the iPhone 5. The 5 does have a larger screen and thus more pixels but the 4, 4S and 5 all have what Apple calls a Retina Display. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_Display.

Retina Display is an Apple trademarked marketing term. A number of phones have a higher pixel density than the iPhones including the Nexus 4, Optimus G, Galaxy S4, HTC One and the Lumia 920 and 1020.

  4. My 4s as well , at lest that's what Apple called it, whatever it was called , the display was near perfect, all things being equal, though my later HTC One X seemed as good or better.

  5. Walmart is clearing out the iPhone 5 for Straight Talk for $549, $100 off. This is the Verizon phone with the unlocked SIM slot, so it can be used on AT&T, Tmobile and MetroPCS (where iPhones must be unlocked).

    1. My local Walmart has the Black iPhone 5 at $100 off; the white iPhone 5 remains at $650.

  6. It seems that may be the regular price because best buy nor virgin mobile mentions anything about the iPhone 4 being on sale.

  7. the iPhone 5 refurbished for $400+mandatory $45 airtime= $445+ tax and free shipping seems like a good deal. Is it the Verizon version with the unlock sim slot??? How is porting in/out of straight talk? and is the referbs from straight talk come with scratches, scuff marks, dings etc? What is the warranty? Sorry for so many questions but this seems like it potentially is a good deal if done right.

    1. The Straight talk iPhone 5 runs on Verizon and has an unlocked SIM slot.

Straight Talk has a reputation for screwing up incoming number ports. If you don't care about MMS it's safer to port your number to Google Voice.

Straight Talk refurbs are generally I quality.

    3. Paragraph 18 of the ST TOS says reconditioned phones have a 1 year limited warranty. It then says: "Apple products are covered by a one-year Limited Warranty offered and administered by Apple. Please see www.apple.com for more information." You should read the rest of para. 18 very carefully. ST may send you a "comparable model" if the same model, refurbished, is not available. They are not liable for more than the market value at the time of return: the price paid, minus a reasonable amount for usage, which is not specified.

    4. The new iPhone 5 at Walmart is only $100 more now. Better deal if you are worried about the goofy warranty policy.

    1. If I wasn't moving from Moto Triump with VM to iPhone 5S with Verizon, I would get the iPhone 4 for $200 and $30 a month. However, I loaded up my Paygo Verizon account with $400, so I am ready to switch to $30 plan w/ 200 minutes (500 evening & weekend minutes) and $30 for 2 GB of data. I might switch to 7 GB of data with mobile hotspot if all goes well and terminate my $50/month LTE data service with ATT to simplify my life.

After 2-years with VM's $25 month plan, and paying $100 a year with Verizon Paygo, I decided that life is too short with a bad network and 2nd class devices. I am looking to pay $70 a month for service with the $400 account covering about the first 6 months of service. It will cost me $30 fee plus $200 for the device and tax. I can't wait for my iPhone 5S. My VM account will end in the middle of October so I can do parallel tests.

  10. ^^ Are you talking about using your Verizon prepaid account balance on a new Verizon post paid account?

    1. Verizon may allow transferring a prepaid balance to a post paid account. I know that AT&T does.

    2. I have a Verizon Paygo acc't that cost $100 a year -- $1 a day and $0.10 a minute. The best part is unlimited Verizon to Verizon for $1 a day. People call it prepaid -- I call it Paygo.

There's about $400 in my Paygo acc't and that money can be moved toward an acc't on contract (people would call this postpaid) for a $30 fee ONLY if done at a Verizon store, which is why if I joined Page Plus, the balance would be lost. That meant I had dead money in the acc't.

I had 2 choices if I wanted a smartphone: (a) get crappy devices with 3G data speeds for $50 a month using the special Walmart $50 refill card or (b) go back to a 2-contract with the $30 plan being the cheapest along with 2GB of LTE data for $30 a month AND Verizon subsidizing the iPhone 5S by $450 over 2 years (note this plan allows for LTE mobile hotspot data speeds).

I chose (b) and skipped the $87 Exceed at Target and will be at Verizon when the iPhone 5S reaches the store. During the recent Target 10% discount and 5% red card on refill cards, I increased my Paygo balance to $400.

      Hope this helps.

    3. Other people have a sensible Choice 3: Use a good, used Verizon iPhone 4S on the $60/month Verizon prepaid smartphone plan. This costs less than option 2, and provides unlimited talk and text and no commitment in exchange for LTE speeds with your 2GB. Overage is 5c/mb.

    4. Choice 3 is neither sensible or inexpensive.

I spent $300 for my Moto Triumph and it's now practically worthless. With post-paid, Verizon is subsidizing the phone by $450 over 2 years and I might get $250 for the phone in 2 years.

5 cents per MB comes out to over $51 per GB, and the bad news is websites are more data hogs than before. And that is for 3G speeds with no chance at mobile hotspot, thus offers no chance of eliminating my data plan with ATT.

What I am doing is loading up my Paygo acc't at a 15% discount before making the switch.

    5. Choice 3 is not about you. Locking into a 2-year contract at a high rate with big taxes, fees and surcharges just so you can get some of your money back to finance your phone is neither sensible nor inexpensive for other people. (Not to mention spending $300 for a Moto Triumph ;-)

  12. What kind of speeds can you expect with the IPhone 4 running on Virgin Mobile? Sprint 3g? WiMax 4g? Sprint LTE? And if you buy this can you use this IPhone with Boost Mobile or other Sprint MVNOs?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IPhone 4 doesn't support LTE or WiMAX, only EVDO 3G.

Virgin Mobile phones only work on Virgin Mobile, not on Boost or Sprint MVNOs.

  15. Grand Gross Total: $484.50
22% cashback on *TCB before taxes: -$97.90
Selling top up card: -$45.00 (might take a bit less)
Switching to Metro PCS rebate: -$100.00

    Potential phone price w/ rebates: = $241.60

Then after 3-4 months I might switch to Ultra or Spot Mobile to save a few more dollars per month with CallingMart.

*TCB is a website (topcashback.com) basically a shopping mall that gives cash back for purchases via paypal or some sort of ACH direct deposit. I'll try my luck with paypal.
