New iOS Carrier Update 15.7 Fixes Data and MMS on iPhones Using NET10 and Straight Talk SIMs

It looks like Apple, AT&T and TracFone have finally fixed the bug that caused data and MMS not to work with iPhones using Straight Talk or NET10 AT&T SIMs. The problem was that the phones would recognize a Straight Talk or NET10 SIM as an AT&T one and configure themselves with non-working AT&T settings that couldn't easily be changed by the user.

iPhone users on the MacRumors Forum and HowardForuns are reporting that they received an over the air update that pushed the correct data and MMS settings to their phones. The new update is Carrier Update 15.6. To get it go Settings > General > About on your iPhone and see if there's an update available. Some users reported that they did not get the update until after they updated iOS to 7.0.3.

Warning: the update configures the phone to use the "new" tfdata APN. If your phone uses the "old" att.mvno APN try to avoid downloading the carrier update as it will break data. If you do get stuck with the update, you can get data (but not MMS) working again by downloading a profile from unlockit.co.nz. Or use the SIM swap method to fix both MMS and data. For more about the different APN's and alternate ways of setting up data see, How to Setup Straight Talk & NET10 Data and MMS on Android, iPhone & Windows Phone.

Even with a new SIM there are other problems with the new tfdata APN. Push notifications for services like iMessage, push email and Google Voice are reportedly delayed by up to 15 minutes and PPTP VPN connections no longer work.

Once you get Carrier Update 15.6 data and MMS should work without you having to do anything, If it doesn't, try the following:
  • If you previously set up custom data profile for Straight Talk or NET10 using the SIM Swap method or by downloading a profile from unlockit.co.nz or iapnupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com, go to Settings > General > Profile and delete it.
  • Turn the iPhone off and back on
If your Straight Talk or NET10 account is configured to use the "old" att.mvno APN and you want to take advantage of the new automattic settings you need to get Straight Talk or NET10 to re-provision your account with the new tfdata APN settings.

If you call customer support they will probably tell you that reprovisioning is not possible. But one HowardForums user reported that he was able to get his account reprovisioned by calling repeatedly and asking that his issue be escalated to a "more technical" department. If you want to try that I recommend using NET10 and Straight Talk's "Executive Resolutions Dept.", a possibly Miami based but definitely more competent call center, at 1-305-715-6500 or 1-800-876-5753. Executive Resolutions hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST. It's best to call early in the day, once Executive Resolutions gets busy calls roll over to the regular support centers.

An easier but more expensive way to get your account reprovisioned is to buy a new SIM from www.straighttalkbyop.com or www.net10byop.com for $6.99 with free shipping. When the SIM arrives switch your account to the new SIM online or by calling CS. New SIMs get provisioned with the new APN.

The new carrier update should make it a lot easier to use an iPhone on NET10 or StraightTalk. It should also mean the end of having to redo settings after every over the air update.

Update: the Staight Talk/NET10 iOS carrier file has been updated again to 15.7. The only change seems to be that "3G" instead of "4G" appears in the top status bar when connected to  HSPA+ data.

  1. It's crazy, I just received the update and immediately started searching the web because I couldn't believe it was working. Also my carrier changed from the Straight Talk "HOME" to "TFW". Also, the AT&T Services menu option is gone in the settings menu and it now says "TFW Services".

This is great news for those who have the new SIM (like myself), because the SIM Swap is no longer needed. I always found myself having to re-program my phone ever other month or so.

  3. I have an old Straight Talk sim, and my iPhone 4s mysteriously stopped working on Friday. I tried installing the unlockit.co.nz profile (Straight Talk new) per instructions above, but the install failed with the message "An APN payload is already installed." Any ideas? I'm jailbroken, and could conceivably move or delete the payload that is blocking installation of the presumably working payload from unlockit.co.nz.

    1. You should be able to go to Settings > General > Profile and delete it.

  4. Tracfone only added 5,000 subs last quarter, after losing 192,000 in Q2 while they shut off unqualified Lifeline customer's lines (they face a $4.57M FCC fine for this). Slow growth may be one reason why they are selling more smartphones under Tracfone brand. Data revenue grew 50% in one year, and is now more than 42% of Tracfone revenue.

    1. I don't know if you can force it. I think you can go to Settings > General > About and check for updates and you should get it if you're on iOS 7.0.3

    2. I have iOS 7.0.3 - my 4s tells me my software is up to date, but the carrier setting is still at 15.5. Any suggestions? Do I just have to wait for the next update?

    3. 15.6 is only for AT&T iPhones including AT&T iPhones on Straight Talk. It that's what you have be sure you have data available and then tap Settings > General > About. You should automatically be asked to update your carrier settings.

  6. I have a jailbroken iPhone 4 and just changed the settings to tfdata and the profile also using iapnupdatetfdata.straighttalk.com and so far so good. I refuse to update to iOS 7 with my 4, have not heard much good about it from other people. And I honestly just don't like how it looks.

  7. I have an iPhone 4S and just updated to iOS 7.0.3 today (carrier update 15.6 included). As expected I lost cellular data and MMS while on ST sim. Tried the old sim swap method and downloaded APN profiles from smartphonematters.com in sequence, and nothing worked. It was only by reading the updated written instructions on the sim swap here that I found the culprit. Duh, the only thing I had to do was click Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings, turn the phone off then on again, and boom! Both MMS and cellular data now work fine without sim swap or adding APN profiles. Thanks to the mods here for that idea.

    1. If you have carrier update 15.6 or latter, go to Settings>General>Reset> and tap Reset Network Settings When the reset finishes, turn the phone off then on again.

If you have an older carrier version, see Updated: How to Setup Straight Talk & NET10 Data and MMS on Android, iPhone & Windows Phone.

  9. How do I know if I have 15.6 carrier update? I don't recall seeing that anywhere amongst the updates - but I am however running iOS 7.0.4 would that automatically include that? is that going to mess with my apn? I don't understand all of this - please bear with me.

    1. I think it says the Carrier version when you go to Settings > General > About
If you pull down on the top of that page like you do to check for new email it should check for available updates.

  11. I have a curious question, I know it's off the topic but I have an unlock iphone 5s, and h2o service but group messaging does not work when sending regular text versus imessage. Is there a fix to this?

I'm on the latest ios update.

    1. The new carrier file doesn't fix MMS on H2O, only Striaght Talk/NET10. You need to manually configure the MMS settings using the SIM swap method. See Did the iOS7 Update Break Your AT&T MVNO iPhone's Data and MMS? Here's How to Fix it for instructions but use these H2O settings instead of the Straight Talk ones:

      APN: att.mvno
      Username:
      Password:

      MMS APN: att.mvno
      Username:
      Password:
      MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
      MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com:80
      MMS Max Message Size: 614400
      MMS Profurl http://www.apple.com/mms/uaprof.rdf

Or if you jailbreak you can use the EditAPN Cydia app to update the MMS settings
