T-Mobile Prepaid Nokia Lumia 521 $84.95 at BestBuy Today Only

BestBuy's Deal of the Day is the T-Mobile Prepaid Nokia Lumia 521 Windows Phone 8 on sale today only for $84.95. The Lumia 521's list price is $149.95. It's been on sale before but this is the best price I've seen on this phone.

The sale Lumia is only available at this price by ordering online at bestbuy.com for in-store pickup. Availability seems quite good. I just checked in the San Francisco area and 8 out of the 10 stores within 50 miles had the phone in-stock.

Even at full price the Lumia is an excellent value. It has a 4 inch 480 x 800 px screen that's very bright and sharp. There's a dual-core 1 Ghz processor and 512 MP of RAM so performance should be good. The 5 MP camera supports 720p HD video recording and there's a removable battery and support for memory cards up to 64 GB.

The Lumia comes with Nokia Here Maps which offers turn by turn driving directions and works offline using maps stored on the SD card. That means that maps and drive navigation work without using data, ideal if you use the phone on T-Mobile's data-less pay as you go or PTel's pay by the MB PAYGO plan. Also included is Nokia Music for unlimited free mix radio.

Here are the Lumia's specs:
Display: 4" 800x480px touchscreen display
8GB internal memory (expandable up to 64GB with optional microSD card, sold separately)
Camera: 5MP with 720p HD camcorder
Operating System: Windows Phone 8
Network: GSM (2G) - 850/900/1800/1900; HSPA+ 21 (3G) - Band II (1900), Band IV (1700/2100/AWS), Band V (850),
Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth: A2DP (stereo Bluetooth), T-Mobile Autopairing, HFP 1.5, AVRCP, PBAP, OPP
Dimensions: 2.55 x 0.48 x 4.88 inches (65 x 12 x 124 mm)
Weight: 4.48 oz. (127 gm)
Battery: 1430 mAh, Talk Time - Up to 9 hours, Standby Time - Up to 330 hours

    Hi Dennis,

Will this phone work for a short International visit to India? If so, I will order it today & pickup.
When buying this phone from Best Buy - is it mandatory to activate it via them immediately?
Can this be unlocked without activating it via Best Buy/Tmobile?

    1. If unlocked the phone will fine work in India.

I've bought a couple of prepaid phones at BestBuy and activation was not required. Just tell them you already have an active T-Mobile micro-SIM if they want to activate it.

T-Mobile will unlock the phone if you have been a customer 60 days and have added $50 in airtime. I don't know if third party unlocking services can unlock the Lumia 521 or not.

Is there anything to choose between the ATT & TMobile versions (520/521)? Which one will be better for international travel by giving coverage via more wireless bands.

Also - eventually, I will likely use this on the ATT network. The 520 is available on ATT for $99 - not much difference between $85 & $99.

    3. The 520 is better for international use. It has the 900 Mhz and 2100 Mhz 3G bands used in India. The 521 doesn't and would only get 2 G data there.

    4. The Lumia 520 AT&T GoPhone is available on TigerDirect for $90. I've never bought anything from TigerDirect , so I don't know what they might charge for shipping.

  2. T-Mo just announced free international roaming in over 100 countries, if true this is major news.

    1. Not true for prepaid. See the Tmobile review on this blog for details.

    2. The free international roaming is postpaid only, at least for now.

  3. Can you use this on ST ATT micro sim?

    1. If you can get the phone unlocked it would work with a ST AT&T SIM

    2. The AT&T version (520) would work with a Straight Talk sim.

    3. I picked up one of these last week at Best Buy online for $99 and picked up in-store. They technically couldn't "price match" because the matching for online purchases is at the time of purchase only. The CS rep said had I actually purchased in-store and not online that they would honor the price match. However, she did acknowledge that the rule "sucked" and she ended up giving me a $15 in-store credit. I was suprised. Ended up getting an AT&T Samsung GoPhone flip phone for $14.99 to replace my father-in-law's barely alive Motorola Razr so it worked out.

  4. now when want to get one of these phones, see this page, then go to best buy and the price is back up. but $99 is still not too bad for the regular price. lol
