Deal: $99.99 No-Contract Verizon iPhone 4s

The Verizon Prepaid Website has the CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) iPhone 4S 16GB on sale for $149.99 or the iPhone 5 16 GB for $249.99. Shipping and activation are free but purchase of a $45 prepaid plan PIN is required.

The $45 plan includes unlimited voice minutes, unlimited text and picture messaging and 1 GB of data. For more data add a "Bridge" data package: $5 for 500 MB good for 30 days, $10 for 1 GB good for 90 days or $20 for 3 GB good for 90 days

Because they are sold as a prepaid phones, the bargain iPhones won't work on Verizon MVNOs like PagePlus or Selectel. Verizon policy prohibits MVNOs from activating Verizon prepaid devices.

  1. Dennis. Will it work on the $50 smartphone plan Verizon Prepaid has at Walmart?

  2. Would you guys recommend getting this or the Moto G if that ever does come out for Verizon prepaid?

    1. They are both good deals and good phones. It really depends if you are an Apple person or an Android one.

    2. Have you heard if they will do this with the 4s soon maybe for $150 or something?

  3. its a deal for the phone, but wouldn't this be cheaper on straight talk with the same carrier. I realized that the straight talk Iphone is more, but if you kept it over a year or so the price might go down.

    1. That's unlikely until the iPhone 6 is released sometime next year. The 4S is still a current model and Apple limits discounting on them.

    2. I rather deal with Verizon Prepaid than Straight Talk. Straight Talk is a mess. Straight Talk T.O.S. says you can't stream video on 3G, but they advertise that you can stream video, then throttle your phone when you do. After you get throttled, Straight Talk is horrible at resetting your data speed. No customer service at all.

  4. would be better if it was the iPhone 4S and not the 4. but we're talking cheap here. this comment is being written by an experienced iPhone user, who has gone through four iphones and currently uses an iPhone 5, and who would say that if you never had an iPhone before, that the 4S is a better starter iphone than the 4, and if you want a good android value phone, then the Moto G is a definite phone to get instead if you don't want to spend more for a phone.

  5. Wait, iPhone 4 and 4S can be used on VZ prepaid, and VZ MVNO? How long has that been the case? How? I thought they were prohibited?

    1. They work fine. Our family has a 4s on Selectel. We could have activated it on Vzw prepaid. Nothing new with this.

  8. I think it is a great deal to be able to buy an Iphone 4 on Verizon prepaid. My wife and I just got out of our contract with Sprint and I was going to get us the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim through Straight Talk. But I saw this sale on this site news page (by the way thanks) for the iphone 4 for the same money as the Samsung Proclaim. I bought two iphones for us and will be saving $70 a month not using Sprint anymore.
Thanks again for your web site Dennis

  9. Is tethering allowed with the $50 Walmart plan?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Tethering is allowed under the terms of Verizon's open access agreement with the FCC. You will need to install a tethering app and on iPhones that generally requires jailbreaking. 10. I have used the same exact iPhone 4S first on PagePlus and now on Verizon. I used http://bit.ly/1dJCcp1 to do an immediate activation a few months ago. Everything worked fine except Pageplus does not support hotspot usage. I ported out the number to another phone which freed up the phone on Pageplus and I activated it on the Verizon $60 plan. They are offering $5.00 off for automatic renewal and I now have hotspot access. I chatted with Verizon support today and they said there is no restrictions and I can use up all of my 2 GB of data as a hotspot if I want. They also said my phone is already unlocked to use an international SIM without me requesting.

    1. The hotspot on my phone started working on my PagePlus activated phone about 4 months ago. I appreciate the info regarding the $5. I am going to look into that.

  11. I have an iPhone 4 that I purchased under contract from Verizon. Contract was up so I ported my number to non-smartphone on the Straight Talk network to save money (my bill was $114 per month), and because it is my understanding that I can't use my iPhone with any carrier other than Verizon. But now I hate the Straight Talk phone for several reasons and I hate their customer service.

I love my iPhone and miss using it. Can I port my number back to Verizon and use their PrePay plan?

Why is it cheaper to use Verizon PrePay than their regular service?

Is there another carrier that would let me use my Verizon iPhone 4 other than Verizon?

I apologize in advance for these questions. Verizon was the only carrier I've ever used until going with Straight Talk about 2 weeks ago, and like I said it has been a nightmare. I have read several of your blog posts but I am totally lost s to what I can and should do.

    1. Yes you can port your number from Straight Talk to Verizon Prepaid or Verizon MVNOs Page Plus or Selectel. All three allow the Verizon iPhone 4 and 4S.

Prepaid is less expensive than postpaid because Verizon needs to compete at all price points. Verizon accepts a lower profit margin to avoid losing customers to competitors. Prepaid customers also have a lower cost basis to Verizon because they don't get roaming or device subsidies and customer support tends to be a bit less capable.

    2. I see. Thank you so much for answering my questions! This is very helpful information. So if Verizon PrePay customers don't get roaming, does that mean they don't have service if they go out of the Verizon network? Given the choice of Verizon PrePay, Page Plus or Selectel, do you have a preference or recommendation of one over the other?

      Delete
    3. Not really, Verizon Prepaid and PagePlus actually do have roaming but you pay 20¢ minute when roaming. That's not a problem in most parts of the counter where Verizon has great coverage. If you expect to be roaming a lot, Selectel has no-extra cost roaming.

      All three are good:
Verizon Prepaid has great 24/7 customer support
Selectel and PagePlus are less expensive.
PagePlus is the best value and has had good support but that may be changing as they were just acquired by Tracfone.
Selectel has roaming, support so so, I recommend going through a Selectel dealer (Genius Wireless, BatMobile and Freedom Wireless are well regarded Selectel dealers).

    4. I cannot thank you enough for your helpful recommendations! I'm so glad I found your site.

    5. There are several websites that use Freedom Wireless if you just use a search engine. The one I use for Selectel is Freedom Wireless of Bay City, http://www.freedomwirelessbc.com
They do free activations and offer very fast, responsive service. Sometimes they have a 3% discount code. This place also sells, fixes and flashes phones, and is a dealer for many of the best MVNOs on all 4 networks.

  12. Is it only $99 online or in stores also?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe the $99 IPhone 4 price is good in Verizon stores too. The stores tend to do their own thing though so don't count on getting that price.

  13. So if I buy the $99 iPhone 4s I can put it on a $50 prepaid Verizon plan ?

Does this Verizon Iphone 4 have GSM radios for use on ATT or Tmobile. If so, is this Iphone SIM locked? Thanks

  16. Can you use the 4 on straight talk?

    1. No, Verizon doesn't allow its MVNOs to activate it's prepaid phones. A postpaid Verizon iPhone 4 would be OK.

  17. Would I be able to use the sim card from the verizon iphone 4s prepaid plan and insert it into the Moto g phone and switch between the 2 phones at any one time?

    1. CDMA doesn't use SIM cards. The SIM in the Verizon 4S is for international GSM roaming. The Verizon Moto G doesn't have a SIM slot because its CDMA only.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes but Verizon makes it harder than it needs to be. When you buy the prepaid iPhone, the site will make you pay for a month's service and activate a new number. When the phone arrives, call Verizon and ask them to swap the new phone onto the old account and transfer the extra month of service to the old account.

  21. I am buying a used prepaid Iphone 4 from my sister. It has cracked screen in one spot on the bottom but the phone seems to be in great working order. The crack doesn't affect the touch screen. My questions are #1: How would I go about getting & how much would I pay for an unlimited talk/text/web prepaid monthly service compared to my straight talk prepaid talk/text/web that is $50 a month. #2: Can I switch the Iphone to have straight talk service instead of Verizon because I had heard that Verizon is more expensive for the prepaid than straight talk & Ive also heard that it doesn't have as much data & I use A TON OF DATA...I don't know if I should stick to my crappy slow android straighttalk phone or buy the Verizon Iphone. Again Im only worried about the speed & data.

    1. I hope you aren't paying your sister much. An iPhone with a cracked screen is only worth a few dollars.

You should be able to use it on your current Straight Talk account. Go to http://www.straighttalkbyop.com/ and go through the steps to buy an access code if it's a Verizon iPhone or a SIM if it's an AT&T one. Then choose "Transfer my existing Straight Talk service" in the activate section.

Straight talk is the least expensive operator for unlimited talk, text and data.

  22. You wrote that a Verizon prepaid phone can't be activated on a Verizon MVNO... but I thought there was a six-month "aging" period -- or do I have that confused with something else?? Thanks!

    1. After 6 months paid service on Verizon Prepaid, a Verizon Prepaid phone can be used on Verizon MVNOs.
