Selectel Gets Online Account Management

Year old Verizon MVNO Selectel Wireless is quite popular with users thanks to competitive pricing, good customer support, no extra cost off-network roaming and a strong dealer network. But ever since launch, the Selectel Website has been a weak spot, mainly because it didn't offer users any way to track their usage, balance and plan expiration date. You had to call Selectel or a Selectel dealer to get this information.

Earlier this week the Selectel site was redesigned and yesterday its brand new online account management (OLAM) feature was turned on. To use it, click the Account Log-In link in the top right corner of the Selectel homepage. You will need to register with your phone number and email address. The site is a little buggy at the moment. It's reportedly broken to the point of being unusable in Firefox but working well in the Chrome browser.

Once you are registered the OLAM lets you view your plan expiration date; minutes, texts and data used, and cash card balance. You can also setup auto-pay and view details of your last ten calls. There's an online chat option too.

Online account management is major step in the maturation of Selectel as a company. The likely demise of Next G and the planned acquisition of PagePlus by TracFone will make Selectel the only sizable independent MVNO.   Selectel has a great opportunity for growth particularly if PagePlus service and support declines under TracFone. Having online account management should increase users confidence in the service and reduce support costs for Selectel and its dealers.

  1. I'm not seeing the $10 Flex Card anymore. I hope they're still offering it as it was a pretty good deal even if it could only be used with a monthly/yearly plan.

    1. The Flex Card is still available from dealers.

  2. I am using Safari. I set up an account and changed the password. I gave the phone a nickname (keep it short or you get a server error). I can see the last 8 phone calls, not 10. Call time is displayed in seconds. I see minutes used and Flex card balance, but they do not populate the field for Data on my annual plan. I cannot find the Logout button. Does anyone else see where it is?

    1. I tried to log in to my new Selectel account using Firefox v.26. Selectel returns a page with an error message: Bad Request

    2. You need to use Chrome, IE or Safari.

    3. If you have an annual plan there is no data included, which is probably why it's not populated.

  3. Dennis, I respectfully disagree. They need to accommodate all their subscribers. We shouldn't "need" to switch browsers. Their site works well when I use my netbook with Chrome. On my main computer I have Firefox, which I prefer. I never have any trouble accessing my local bank, credit union, or other sites such as Air Voice Wireless, with whom I have my other account. I'd like to see them fix this.

    1. Actually as a sometime Web designer and Web standards advocate I agree with you, Selectel needs to fix their site. But until they do, if you actually want to use the site you need to do it with Chrome, IE or Safari.

    3. Safari on what platform (iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows)? What happens when you try (error message, no comment box, comment seems to post but never appears, etc.)?

    4. Safari on OS 10.6.8. When I click Preview, the comments disappear.

    5. I don't have a Mac but I'll test it at the Apple Store tomorrow or Friday and see if I can figure out what's happening.

If you don't preview, can you post?

    6. When I try to Post without a Preview, I get an error: "Comment should not be empty"
I get the same error trying to post after Preview clears all my comments.

    7. Just failed to post using my wife's newer MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.5 and Safari 6.1. She has no Extensions installed.

    8. Using the latest Safari 7.0.1 on OS 10.9.1 I was not able to post this, even with all Extensions turned off using the main switch in Extension Preferences. This is likely what you would see installed on Macs at the Apple Store.

    9. To use Safari on a Mac with Blogger, you have to accept 3rd Party Cookies.

    10. That's correct. This site runs on Google's Blogger and apparently comments in Blogger do not work if 3rd party cookies are disabled. Third party cookies are disabled by default in Safari but enabled by default in Chrome and Firefox.

I was able to confirm this on an Apple Store Macbook running Safari 7.0.1 were I was unable to leave a comment until I enabled 3rd party cookies. To enable them; click Safari's Apple menu > Preferences > Privacy and change "Block cookies and data from websites" to "never".
