Finally! Straight Talk Adds Option To Check Data Usage

A number of Straight Talk users on HowardForums users are reporting that they received a text this morning saying;

You can now check on your data usage at any time! Text USAGE to 611611.

At least two Straight Talk AT&T users have confirmed that the code works. If it works with Straight Talk I suspect it will work with NET10 too. I don't know if this feature is limited to Straight Talk on AT&T or if it also works with T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint based Straight Talk accounts. If you are a Straight Talk or NET10 user please try texting USAGE to 611611 and leave a comment letting everyone know if it works and whether you are using NET10 or Straight Talk and with which underlying carrier.

Update 2/27/14: Based on user comments here and on Howard Forums, sending USAGE to 611611 is working for most users on Straight and NET10 unlimited plans using any of the operators (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon).

This is something I've been hoping for a long time that Straight Talk would do. Straight Talk says data is throttled after 2.5 GB in a month but there are many complaints on the forums and elsewhere of throttling at much lower usage levels.

There's been speculation that Straight Talk is throttling regardless of how little data has been used if they detect streaming or tethering.

Having a counter at the network level should go a long way to finding out what's really happening and keeping Straight Talk and its users on the same page about data used and under what conditions throttling occurs.

    1. That sounds like they are either rounding data sessions up or their counter didn't reset on your renewal date.

  2. Sprint based Straight Talk...estimated usage is 79.4MB

  3. I just texted the number and it says I've used 448.6MB which is accurate. However, I've been throttled for about a week now. I called ST multiple times and they keep telling me the system is automated and there's nothing they can do. Maybe I will call back now that I have evidence that I've used way less than the 2.5GB.

    2. This happened to me after two days of my refill. To bad so sad, is basically what I was told. Amazing a company this large can be run so poorly.

    3. No luck unfortunately. They just keep telling me that their system does the throttling automatically and they have no control over it. I will be looking for a new carrier as this is crazy.

    4. Jeff, I am a class action attorney who is currently suing Straight Talk for falsely advertising its data plans. I would like to speak with you about your experience under the "new" 2.5 GB throttle limit. You can reach me at dan@hattislaw.com.

    5. They also cut my data off.... I called them to see why my data wasn't working and they told me it was because I was streaming videos... I'm like am I not allowed to do that?... she said no ... I said I thought I have unlimited data... she said Yea you do but you can't stream videos or movies (such as YouTube or Netflix) or you can't listen to internet radio (such as Pandora)... I was like well what's the point of having unlimited data???.and I barely even used my data for that because I was always using Wi-Fi. It was faster... she told me she couldn't put my data back on until I refilled my account.. which was days away... so I was like OK whatever.. well I refilled my account and guess what, I still had no data.... I called them again and they told me there was nothing they could do but when I refill my account I would have data... I said I was told that last month and I just refilled my account and still have no data... then they said it was because I used my phone as a hotspot... which never happened... i don't even know how to do that... so after that month it was almost a year before I used straight talk again... but I only use the data to receive picture messages... I don't like that they claim to have unlimited data when in reality you don't and you are restricted and told what to use that data for...

  4. I'm surprised you would showcase Straighttalk a company that's known for throttling people who supposedly use up too much bandwidth who aren't even close to their 2.5gb allowed, but not Blackwireless

    1. I agree! We need to give more press to Blackwireless and H20, who throttle everybody!

    2. This is one of the reasons why I stay with Boost and not go with Straight Talk. Boost may not have the greatest coverage like ST. At least in my area I get great 3G/4G LTE data. But my payments are at $40. And even with 2.5GB a month, Boost doesn't try to tell you what you can do with your data.

      Delete
    3. I agree. Im a dealer and the company that I'm selling the most now is Boost. Customers are tired of dealing with Net10, H2O and Simple, which cuts off your internet when ever they want to. When this happens people feel that they are being robbed.

  9. I am on BYOP with an ATT sim.
I texted USAGE to 611611 and got the reply that data usage is estimated and I had to reply 'Y' to accept terms and and conditions of service. I texted Y and got the following:
"Thank you for accepting. Your usage will be sent shortly."
Less than a minute later I get:
"Your phone must be active to receive your usage. Refill Today!"
If I go on their website, it shows that my service end date is 03-16-2014.
This seems to be of little value to me.

  11. I really had a bad experienced with ST. I will always get throttled the whole month without even using 1gb. Everh time I called customer care they would say that there's nothing they can do. Now I have Boost and I love it. I Dont have to deal with those crooks anymore.

    1. Same here. Boost 3G and 4G LTE is good here. When I went to buy my S3 at Walmart two months ago, they tried so hard to get me to buy a Straight Talk iPhone. I guess their ST phone sales are plummeting badly.

  12. Mine says I have used 3026.9MB since last billing cycle. I got throttled the other day, so it's accurate. I wonder if that number includes wi-fi usage. I know that wi-fi doesn't count against you 2.5 GB, but maybe the new texting system takes into account ALL types of data.

    1. There's no way Straight Talk can know how much WiFi data you have used.

      Delete
    2. That's just silly - carriers have no knowledge of whether you're using WiFi. Even if they did, they cannot "charge" you for using it, since it's not their service. That would be like the water company charging you for the water bottles you buy from the grocery stores.

  13. Tried it and it works on Straight Talk Verizon. Sadly I just went into a new month at 11 central time so it shows 0 MB used. Wish I had seen this article sooner! Cause my meter had just hit 2.5 GB today. This is great news though for Straight Talk!

  15. "There's been speculation that Straight Talk is throttling regardless of how little data has been used if they detect streaming or tethering."

i wonder if this is what happened to me? I was doing minimal tethering (to a tablet for simple voice queries, and maybe lyrics downloads).. can't imagine i used more then 5-10MB worth.. but shortly after, i noticed that i no longer had 3G, or even 1x.. Thought it was something with the towers in the area, but found that no matter where I went, had the same issue (not to mention, my wife, who also uses ST, on the VZW network had 3G the whole time)...

    1. This is exactly what happened to me. When I first got my ST phone (verizon), I tried a tethering app to hook up my Tabet. I had barely used any data, but the next thing I noticed was the the data speed was way way down. I took the app off, waited a month and speeds were back.

      Delete
    2. Have you ever tethered before? There is no way you can do voice queries and search up lyrics for less than 10MB. If you watched the data usage, it eats it up quickly when you tether.

  22. Well now I know why my phone slows down after I watch youtube videos and why I havent gotten a text saying I went over my speed and my speed is now being reduced this month. I havent really been watching videos this time just surfing. I cant break my contract with ST because I dont have a job to switch to a better one like Boost. I have heard good things about MetroPCS and Boost. It will be one of those when I am finally able to switch. This is bullcrap I can't watch my vids. I have kind of been getting around the internet radio by downloading the it instead of listening live. Yea I wish I had never gone with straight talk in the first place.

  23. I have the galaxy S3 thru straight talk and I'm not happy about being "throttled". I used the full 2.5GB (3.1GB total) last month. I called and complained but got the "it will be restored when you refill you plan" crap and when my reserve plan kicked in 2 hours ago my data speed was restored. However, this is the first time I have been throttled and I've only had my S3 for 3 months now. Also, I do stream YouTube all the time, just 1-2 videos at a time and then close it

  24. OH MY, I sent the text and 8.41GB was the reply - I was throttled 8 days into initial month with ST my phone usage said 6.3GB when I received notification email, also I noticed throttling at +6.0GB. I hadn't had any type of phone or internet service for 2yrs prior to signing up with ST the 8.41GB of data usage 3 WKS into my first month month def says I had some catching up to do :) My hope is ST restores my speeds as soon as they apply my reserve versus not having them restored due to the EXCESSIVE usage of an amount greater than 200% of what's allowed, to maybe teach me a lesson! Sorry fellow ST users for my excess usage, rest assure I am caught up and my usage will not exceed my share each month in the future as it did this month!

  28. Straight Talk throttled my data yesterday. I have used them as my provider for two years and am very aware of their "unlimited" limitations. When I first exceeded 3 gig limit the mobile data was restricted to 2G speed. Literally made using the phone for anything other than calls or texts useless. I made my first call to their spectacular customer service dept. You are clearly calling a call center in a country in Southeast Asia, maybe India, Phillipnes because their English is very good, that was not the issue, the issue being they arent regulated by US laws or follow typical service or business ethics. I call with a problem, I want aa solution. I dont yell or demand unreasonable concessions. Some people abuse the customer service agents and basically bully the company to give them things they dont deserve because the company has a "customer is always right policy" which is nonsense in those cases but it happens quite often. I dont believe that. I believe if I am a good customer and you are a good business then we should find a solution that SOLVES my problem and allows you to provide the service I pay for.
Straight Talk operating out of a foreign country as most companies now base their call centers at doesnt have the same business culture or service standards as a major US provider will. I had AT&T for many years. I call them speak with an American call center and world class service agents who are phenomenal at their jobs. Not because they give me what I want, but because they are trained to solve your issue. The buck stops with them and they pride themselves on doing everything in their power to solve your issue or at the very least provide you with anaccurate and thorough explanation as to why it could not be. Straight talk has none of these agents at their call center. They arent required to provide a standard of service. There is no Better Business Bureau to punish unethical business practices over there in Indonesia or whatever third world country they sub out the work to say they can pay as little as possible on labor. The agents you speak with may or may not be pleasant with you. They may raise their voice at you and talk over you. They have hung up on me. I asked to speak with a manager, which im sure they hear quite often and to them this doesnt mean "Oh no, I hope he doesnt tell my manager what a horrible job Ive done", because the manager does not care either. In fact the manager is the worst offender. Several managers have told me to " go back to AT&T you dont like service then". I want to stress here that I wasnt calling them yelling, or being beligerant in any way. I had an issue. I wanted the issue solved or someone to give me an accurate, thorough explanation of why it could not.

    1. I recommend never calling regular customer support at Straight Talk or any other TracFone company. It's generally a complete waste of time. Always start with the chat option on their Facebook support page and only call if chat gives you a number and PIN. The number plus PIN takes you to tier 2 support which is generally at least marginally competent.

  29. The first time I called was when I found out straight talk is an unlimited data provider. Straight Talk at the time in my area provided 3g coverage and after 3 gigs you are shut down. They see it as still providing data because I guess in the strictest sense of the word it is data...at such low speed that it is no longer functional. I went through the whole " well why do you advertise unlimited" thing and im not gonna go there we all know now how shady they are. I put wifi in my home and never exceeded the data limit the impose on their "unlimited" data again...for $45 a month it was the most cost effective service without a contract I could find so despite all the lies and abuse I stayed because of the bottom line. Money.
Yesterday my wifi suffered an outage and I was waiting for a technician to fix it at my home the next day. I was mindful that I should watch my mobile data because of the problems I had suffered before from this company. After half a day of business and casual surfing my data service dropped drastically. An example of how slow being opening the facebook app and it cycling for 30 seconds before a very laggy news feed appears with profile pictures gone... We all know this is because your service is very slow, all been there before. I have data counters, wifi and mobile data speed tests installed and after checking I had used 1.15 gigs of mobile data in 10 days of 30 day cycle. Not even close to their brick wall of data limit. My mobile data was at 4G LTE specs the day before. After a very clear data throttle it was at HSDA level. Almost impossible to use, but even worse, not what I have paid for. This phone call was the same Straight Talk nonsense I expected. The agent who was bothered by my call and was busy talking to a coworker, which he did in several times while we were speaking. I had to repeat several times a very simple "my mobile data is no where near your limit, why has my data been restricted?" He lies. He tells me it hasnt. "Yes it has sir, I have monitored my speeds and they dropped signifigantly since yesterday, why?" Your providers fault, where you live has bad service, not our fault he says. First off Straight Talk is not a service provider, they are a sevice middle man just so everyone knows. They "rent" use of already existing T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and ATT towers. This is now their favorite go to excuse for all the mobile data issues you experience. This was a lie in this case however because I never would have had good service since living here, not a very clear data throttle. "Look, I have lived here forever, I know you guys arent really unlimited, I had a problem before where I went over 3gigs and you cut me down to 2 g, I have only used 1.15 its not ATTs fault because it worked fine until my wifi went out and i was forced to use your mobile data today, I have used it half a day and already a data issue".. He cuts me off "you been steaming movies, you been downloading songs, you arent allowed to go on youtube stream movies and use pandora"

  30. I was stunned. Im not gonna go into the whole exchange we had from this point because I was sick of it and lost my cool. I finally demanded what I deserved. The effing service that I effing pay for. Who are they to tell me how to use my phone, my service, and to tell me "you not allowed" to use anything I want on it. They are Straight Talk. They are a company that startes with a lie, still to this day lives by that standard, and after seeing you are using the service you pay for in a way that they dont like will do as they please to punish you. By the way, I wasnt downloading anything on mobile data because I was well aware of data limit and had a wifi outage for one day. I only download and use high data processes on wifi, im not stupid. The conversation ended with me telling them I wanted my data turned back on, I would not get off the phone until I spoke with someone who solves my issue that they had caused and they could fix. They had illegaly, and deceptively cut my data down for some unknown reason. He had lied to me three times on this call, told me it was ATT which it wasnt, lied that they didnt cut my data, but when he told me not to use this or that on my phone said they had throttled my data. I was livid. He refused to let me speak with anyone else, put me on hold which didnt mute his end unknowingly to him, and speaking in a foreign language to somebody else laughed loud several times during my hold. He came back on and said "you buy more air time, you get another $45 plan your data go back". I absolutely refused to do that. I had wifi, i had no need for more data i had plenty of data until their bs unlimited data limit was reached. They had taken their horrible business practices one step further and throttled data well before that. This company is unlike any company I have ever dealt with. I have read about the lawsuits, suffered their abuse but made a money decision and with wifi it made sense. But with the data throttle it is just too much. This company has and always will operate in the lowest end of standards and ethics. Even after lawsuits and a huge public outcry over all the lies, deception, and abuse, continue to take and take but never give. They are middleman hucksters. Making their fortune off of mainly lower income, faulty credit customers who cant get a contract through the major providers. Do these people not deserve to be treated fairly too? I have the money and credit to contract with a major provider but save money in the long run using this service. No more. I had wifi fixed this morning and just to give them one more chance I went to the store off wifi and checked to see if they had released the data strangle. They hadnt. I drove to AT&T walked in and since I had been a good customer before, they smiled and said " hey sorry to hear they treated you so badly, what can WE do to bring you back to the ATT family again and what do YOU need?" .. Wow. What a difference the location of your customer service and sales people makes. To all the companies that farm out their service, tech, and sales calls to a call center in Asia.... Im glad you saved a buck on your labor. You think it helps your bottom line. It doesnt. Im a bottom line guy. I suffered abuse, lies, deceptive business practices beyond a point that makes any sense. This company was built on a deception. It is rotten to the core. It will suffer the inevitable fate all companies like this always do. Ill read about it one day on my AT&T phone and chuckle.

I never get anything positive from first person so I ask to be escalated every time. Twice they have, once being this evening and i explained all the events again. I told him I had service already paid for and intended for it to be used. He said okay lets get you a new APN.. Alright, lets give it a shot. Do you have another phone to call me from so we can troubleshoot... Nope, but im confident i can put a new APN in just give it to me..he texted it to me... Didnt work. Called back... Explained it all again.. He says if you dont have another phone to call from I cant help. This is the problem in a nutshell. Reasons why they cant help instead of finding an alternative solution. I said you are gonna help youre on speakerphone im in my settings lets do this. Lol. He gave me an APN name field they hadnt given me before.. Restarted phone.. Didnt work. Called back... They are closed for the night. Oh brother.

This month I just refilled my phone on the 19th haven't used data because I'm always on wifi at work and at home, but I just texted the number and it says I've already used 4.27gb when I'm always on wifi. 1. If you are using Android 4.1 or latter, go to Settings > Data Usage (called Data Manager on some phones) and check to see if you are really using as much data as Straight Talk says you are.

If you really are using as much data as they say, tap each app that you don't want using data, and check the "Restrict background data box".

If you are using significantly less data than Straight Talk claims, FIRE Straight Talk for lying and cheating. Good alternatives are Cricket on the AT&T network or Selectel or Verizon Prepaid if you need the Verizon network.

  37. Bought an iPhone 5S from Wal-Mart in July 2016 for $149. In late August 2016 I checked data usage as shown in the "Use Cellular Data For" section of "Cellular" under "Settings." But it showed I had used several MBs for music and I never used or use my iPhone [or anything else] for music. I had figured in July the phone I bought was "refurbished" or previously used, so maybe the previous owner played the music. There were other usages I doubt I used as well. So today I reset the statistics to zero. The phone did come with what appeared to be a really good screen protector which I doubt Apple installed. The phone has worked great.
