AT&T Locked IPhones No Longer Need To Be Unlocked to Work on Aio

Until very recently, AT&T iPhones had to be unlocked to work on Aio Wireless, AT&T's prepaid value brand. That was a bit strange because the "must be unlocked" requirement only applied to iPhones, other locked AT&T phones worked fine on Aio.

Sometime last week, AT&T made a network level change that magically allows locked iPhones to accept and use Aio SIMs. There's been no announcement of the change, but multiple HowardForums users as well as Aio support have confirmed that locked AT&T iPhones now work with Aio SIMs.

Aio (pronounced "A-O") Wireless is a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T that launched last May. Aio is sold online and through a network of independent and company owned stores. It features lower plan prices than AT&T's legacy GoPhone prepaid brand.

AT&T acquired Cricket Wireless earlier this month and has announced that Aio and Cricket will be combined as The New Cricket. Although the name is changing, AT&T has said that current Aio customers for not see any changes in their plans, services and pricing.

iPhones can be used with any of Aio's monthly phone plans shown in the table below
Plan Name Monthly Price Hi-Speed Data 1 Allowed devices
Talk & Text $25  Data not available Basic Phones and BYOP SIMs Only
Basic $40 ($35 with autopay) 500 MB Any
Smart $50 ($45 with autopay) 2.5 GB Any
Pro $60 ($55 with autopay) 5 GB Any
High-Speed data is throttled to a maximum of 8 Mbps for LTE data and 4 Mbps for HSPA+. After the high-speed data cap is reached speed is further throttled to about 256 Kbps on the Smart and Pro plans and 128 Kbps on the Basic plan.

  2. According to a thread on HowardForums, data appears to be throttled to 128kbps after you hit the cap on the 500MB plan.

  3. Should the last sentence in paragraph 2 read "There's been no announcement of the change, but multiple HowardForums users as well as Aio support have confirmed the locked AT&T iPhones do work now with AiO SIMs." instead of AT&T Sims? Its minor but might be confusing.

    3. You should be able to sign up online or in a store or by calling Aio. To see the offer's terms go to www.aiowireless.com/shop/plans.html and click the "Save $5 Each month" banner.
