Virgin Mobile Unveils $20/Month Walmart Exclusive Unlimited Talk OR Text Plans

Sprint's payLo by Virgin Mobile. prepaid brand is launching a couple of new $20 per month unlimited plans tomorrow, June 21. The plans, which will only be available at Walmart stores are:
  • $20 Unlimited Talk with unlimited voice minutes and 50 texts
  • $20 Unlimited Text with unlimited messaging and 50 voice minutes
If the user runs out of texts or minutes, overage rates are 10¢ per minute or 15¢ per text. Data is available but it costs an outrageous $1.50/MB. But users probably won't be using much data as the plans are only available with two very basic phones, the $15.99 Kyocera Kona flip phone and the $39.99 Samsung Montage QWERTY slider messaging phone.

Twenty dollars is the best price I've seen yet for unlimited voice calling and I can see this plan as being popular with text adverse users like some seniors. The unlimited text plan might work as a first mobile phone for young teens, but the old-school phones won't impress most teenagers. If you are managing one of these plans for a child or aging parent, it might be a good idea to keep a zero balance in the account to avoid getting hit with overage charges. Or for $5 more per month Virgin Mobile is offering a $25/month unlimited talk AND text promotional smartphone plan. $25/month unlimited talk AND text plans are also available from AT&T's Cricket and T-Mobile's GoSmart and MetroPCS brands.

  1. I take it this is for "new" customers only with a new phone number.

    1. Maybe, the press release doesn't mention that the plans are for new customers only but that restriction may be buried in the terms of the new offer. We probably won't know until Walmart starts selling these plans.

  2. I'm liking how these unique plans are becoming available...but only on Sprint or Verizon in the case of the Red Pocket $19 plan with 1000 talk, unlimited text and 1gb data. But they're not available on GSM!!!!!

    1. Of course not. They can't be restricted to two ridiculous handsets that way.

    2. Does "Red Pocket $19 plan with 1000 talk, unlimited text and 1gb data." still exist? I could not find it on their site at all.

    3. I've never heard of that plan either. The closest would be Red Pocket's unadvertised Beta CDMAV (Verizon) $19.99 plan with unlimited texts, 300 minutes and 1 GB data.

    4. Yes, I found that one too. With the minutes in the one being found being less than one-third of 1000, I didn't consider it to be the same one at all.

  3. Only on two phones what about other PayLo phones

  4. Kajeet beats the Unlimited text version with 2 of their similar plans, $15 and $20 (plus 10% fee):

Data is 'only' $1, but you can buy a data package to get a much lower rate. BYOSP.

  5. So it's THE day. How does one actually FIND this offer? Call Walmart stores in the area? Saw one thing saying not ALL Walmarts would have it. Drive to each one? Does the option come with activation? They make it available but how does one actually find it?

    1. I think the way it's supposed to work is that you buy a Kona or Montage at Walmart and when you activate the phone, the $20 plan will be listed as an available choice. I recommend waiting a week or so for the dust to settle and we start hearing reports of successful activations.

  6. Republic Wireless gives you UnTnT for $10. The phone is $150, but depending on how long you have the plan, you'll make up the difference. You can even switch out of the plan to one with data once per month.

  7. Kona is $5.99 online this week:

  8. The $5.99 VM Kona is online, http://www.walmart.com/ip/payLo-Kyocera-Kona-Prepaid-Cell-Phone/26923422
and it says, "Limited stores" so I suppose you can check the inventory online for the stores near you. YMMV if the store staff can find it if it's new, however.

    1. Print out and price match at Best Buy. Done it before.

  9. I think it's pricey even at $15, let alone $20.. Wouldn't it be better to offer unlimited data for $20 (3g) and let users do free calling over VOIP (guarantee a 64kbit channel 24/7/365)?
Sprint tends to overthink & overcharge for service-- their little MVNOs too!

    1. Republic and FreedomPop already offer what you want (except nobody can guarantee a channel everywhere that is clear enough to work well). The voice quality on Sprint 3G is crap most of the time. Do you think that is going to satisfy most people? Overthinking is better than underthinking.

    2. Sprint's 3G CDMA network has high latency and will likely provide an unacceptable VoIP experience. The bandwidth requirement is negligible and could theoretically be achieved with 1xRTT service, but 300-400 msec is a nightmare.

  10. I just tried activating an amazon bought kona online and called in. The person on the phone specifically said that the kona was not from walmart and hence could not put me on the 20$ plan.

  11. You MUST buy the WalMart Stores Kona or Montage device to be able to get the WalMart Exclusive $20 Plans.

  12. Is tax charged on the 20 dollar Virgin plans?

    1. It depends on your state. Virgin charges applicable State and local sales tax and e911 fees. Some states don't have any taxes on prepaid airtime, some do.

  13. This must be selling like hotcakes. Can't find the Kona online at Walmart. Happened to be near a Walmart about 50 miles from home right at rush hour so I stopped in and there was just ONE phone out of 3 hangars dedicated for them. Picked it up but unfortunately at $19.99.

Should have bought the top up through Walmart online it was $21.90 through VM but would have been $19.88 through Wally.

$20 for unlimited talk is a bargain.

  14. funny that no sooner did they announce this plan the two phones disappeared from sight and have never come back to walmart.com or walmart stores. me thinks they were just trying to unload some non selling phones and once that was done, basically so was the promotion. funny however in one of my local target stores the montage was selling for just $9.99. virgin also charges sales tax while others like metropcs and gosmart its just $25 flat per month. where I am virgins $20 plan is actually, with tax, $21.20
