Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week Aug 3 - Aug 9

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature listing all the best US prepaid phone deals in one place.

My Deal of the Week is brand new HTC Desire 816 LTE Android Phablet which is on sale for $199.95 with free shipping at QVC.com.

The 816 is so new that it hasn't even been announced by Virgin Mobile yet. QVC seems to have jumped the gun and is taking pre-orders for shipment on 8/8/14, which is presumably when the 816 will launch.

According to QVC, the Desire has rather spectacular specs for a $200 phone including a 5.5 inch 1280x720 HD screen, Android 4.4 KitKat, a 1.6Ghz quad core Snapdragon processor 1.5GB RAM, 8GB internal memory, LTE, SD card support, a 13MP main camera and a 5MP front facing camera.

I would take those specs with a grain of salt as they appear to be for the unlocked GSM model rather than the Virgin Mobile variant. QVC says the 816's list price is $236.00 sounds like it's on the low side if the specs are accurate. For more about the Desire 816 check out Android Central's review of the GSM model.

    1. It's a CDMA phone, there's nothing to unlock.

    2. But i'm curious, in qvc in the specs they say "Compatible with GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz 2G/2.5G networks; WCDMA 850/900/2100MHz 3G/3.5G networks; EMEA 800/900/1800/2600MHz 4G/LTE networks", so? The desire 816 got a slot for a gsm chip for the gsm networks ? Because if it does it can be unlocked, right?, btw thank you for your webpage it helps a lot.

    3. As I said in the post those are obviously the specs for the GSM model because they are missing any mention of Virgin Mobile's CDMA and EVDO.

Also PhoneArena found what looks like the FCC certification for the Sprint 816 and it's CDMA/LTE only, no GSM. It does however support Sprint's Triband "Spark" LTE http://www.phonearena.com/news/Supposed-HTC-Desire-816-for-Sprint-appears-at-the-FCC_id56663

  3. Quiz of the Week:
We started out as a joint venture, but one of the original founders sold their share to the other partner several years ago. People like our low prices, and we do a lot of promotions to attract new customers. We target a market segment that is price-sensitive and willing to compromise a little on other things. We were one of the first brands to respond to the trend of young customers talking less and texting and using data a lot more. So far, our market strategy has worked pretty well, although 2013 was a rocky year for us from a service perspective. We offer LTE now, and that has helped us attract more customers. Some of our plans are stale, and we have to update them soon. We are in the market for the long haul, and if we are lucky, a future business development could really help accelerate our growth.
    Who are we?

    2. We have a Winner of the Quiz of the Week! Virgin Mobile is the correct answer. -O.P.
      - Started in 2001 as a joint venture between Virgin Group, Singapore Telecommunications Limited and original Sprint Corporation, Virgin Mobile USA began operations in June, 2002 as a MVNO providing services via the Sprint 1900 MHz CDMA network. In 2008, Virgin Mobile USA acquired post-paid services provider Helio, Inc., and in 2009, Sprint Nextel bought out joint venture partner Virgin Group, becoming the sole owner of Virgin Mobile USA.
      - First LTE device was sold on Feb 25, 2013, the Samsung Victory LTE for $299.99.
      - Device are available for sale at 40,000 locations, and top-ups at 150,000 places.
      - Virgin has about 6M customers.
      - Sprint licenses the right to use the Virgin Mobile brand in the United States from UK-based Virgin Group.

  6. Thank you for listing the prices of these phones! I just got done talking with someone at "the appropriate department" at Straight Talk. He said I "have to have a contract with Straight Talk for 12 months" before they will unlock their LG Optimus Fuel phone for me to use on another carrier, in my case, Page Plus Cellular. I'm confused. Is that true? I thought CDMA phones were unlocked. Page Plus and Straight Talk both use the Verizon network. If I buy a CDMA phone from Straight Talk, do you think it will work on the Page Plus pay-as-you-go plan? Thanks.

    1. You are correct, CDMA phones aren't locked. Most never activated Straight Talk CDMA phones, including the Fuel have been reported to work on PagePlus. If your Fuel is already active on Straight Talk, I think you need to deactivate it by switching a different phone onto the account and even then I'm not sure if it will work or not on PagePlus.

    2. Most Straight Talk CDMA phones work on other Verizon MVNOs? I thought the LG Fuel was the first?

Will any Verizon based Straight Talk or NET10 phone work on Verizon MVNOs?

      Delete
    3. The first Straight Talk phones that were discovered to work on PagePlus were the iPhone 4, 4s and 5. Others that I've heard work are the LG Optimus Zip, LG Optimus Fuel and ZTE Savvy. The Samsung Galaxy S III does not work. Others I don't know about.

      Delete
    4. How did they block the S III from working if it's not locked?

      Delete
    5. CDMA phones aren't SIM locked but their are hundreds of things but intentional and unintentional that could make a phone from one operator not work on another. My understanding is that the ST S III did not activate on PagePlus the normall way by dialing *22890. Manual programming got talk and text working but I don't think anyone has managed to get 3G data to work.

      Delete
    6. I get it now.
When Straight Talk starts selling Verizon based LTE phones they have to be sold unlocked right?

  7. any thoughts on the Moto X for $300? Is that a good solid phone? I am going to go the Straight talk route I think. Based on the deals available it seems like my best route might be the Moto X for $300 or the SG S3 for $300. The S3 is Verizon based so the way I understand it would be 4g not LTE, correct? Is the S3 a straight talk variant that's locked into straight talk and/or have lower specs than a standard S3? With the Moto X being straight from Motorolla and unlocked, I could try Straight talk for a while and move somewhere else with it easily, right? I'm very new to this, but if my understanding of what's going on above is true, then assuming the Moto X is indeed a good phone, it seems like that might be the better deal for me. Let me know your thoughts. I'm so glad I found this site. You do a great job!

    1. Or you could sign a contract and get that phone for free, just a thought.

    2. The Straight Talk Galaxy S3 is 3G only no 4G or LTE and it only works on Straight Talk. The unlocked Moto X can be used on Straight Talk and on any AT&T and T-Mobile MVNO but it won't work on Verizon.

Verizon is selling the Galaxy S4 refurbished (S4, not the S3) for $200 right now. They also have the LG G2 new for $300 I don't know how long those prices will last.

    3. Moto X (unlocked GSM version) is an excellent phone. Better performance than the specs would indicate. Clean bloat free user interface and some unique Google built software features that aren't found on other phones even Nexus ones. Works with a Straight Talk AT&T or T-Mobile SIM or T-Mobile or AT&T themselves or any of their MVNOs. It's on sale now because there's a new version coming out soon but it will probably cost at least $400

Straight Talk S3: older phone that only works with Straight Talk. Slightly better camera than Moto X but slower overall and worse battery life, slow Verizon 3G, no 4G, no LTE

If it was me I'd get the Moto X unless you live in one of those places where only Verizon works.

  8. at&t should work. Thank you for the help. While going thru the order process I saw you could order it unlocked with a Net 10 sim or T-mobile sim. That option wasn't available for Straight talk. It looks like the Net10/ST plans are pretty similar. Is there any difference in quality between the companies? It doesn't seem like there should be and I guess if there is I could just get a ST sim later and switch to them right?

  9. Is there some secret to actually getting a Cricket phone on sale or is it some sort of bait and switch? The Lumia 630 and Moto G have been out of stock for 3-4 days now. Haven't they heard of taking a back-order?
