  2. Dennis,
Why would Best Buy be selling Galaxy S-3 that is for verizon prepaid and it is only advertised as a 3G?

    1. Because it was originally released on Verizon prepaid with the LTE disabled. This was before Verizon recently started allowing and selling 4g LTE phones for prepaid.

    2. Is it using a different chipset, or can the LTE function be restored with a firmware update?

    3. I don't know what Verizon did to disable LTE on the prepaid S III. I haven't heard of anyone successfully re-enabling it either.

  3. Technically, even though you mention both at nearly the same price point, the pictured phone is the VM Volt (white) while the deal of the week phone is the Boost Volt (black).

    1. You're right, the Boost Volt is black. The default wallpaper is too. I've replaced the image with one of the Boost version.

  7. I'm starting to see KitKat as a drawback, when I found out about the glitch in KitKat that prevents me from deleting, making directories, etc in my own phone.

I guess you can root phones to get around this. But you shouldn't have to root something to get it to work.

Making it hard for users to do things. Very Apple-ish of them:

    http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-samsung-galaxy-s4/384648-kitkat-issue-cant-write-external-sd-card.html

I mention this only because of the top deals having KitKat.

And I recently had an experience where I was going on a trip, and wanted to load my phone with mp3 and video files. The KitKat design flaw made it impossible: I fought with it for hours, before giving up.

Beware KitKit, or be prepared to root your phone to get it to do stuff previous Android versions did.

    1. The changes Google made to SD card access to close a security hole that could allow a rogue app to overwrite other apps installed on the card with a hacked copy that could steal passwords, financial data etc.

Under KitKat, 3rd party apps can only write to folders that they have created in the card's root directory. That means you can't use a third party file manager like ES File Explorer to manage the SD card's contents.

      However:
      - Manufacturer Installed apps like the LG File Manager still have the ability to create, copy, move and delete files and folders anywhere on the SD card
      - When you connect the phone to a PC you can still create, copy, move and delete files and folders anywhere on the SD card

The change results in a slight loss of convenience in the name of better security, which I consider a fair tradeoff. I have a KitKat tablet that's not rooted and am able to do anything I want to with the SD card using the built-in file manager or a cable and PC.

  8. "- When you connect the phone to a PC you can still create, copy, move and delete files and folders anywhere on the SD card"

I found that I could not do any of this stuff even from the PC once it was connected by cable. It was locked out.

I am not sure about the LG File Manager, but the Samsung one is crippled and doesn't allow me to copy from the network or the attached PC.

I finally got around severe KitKat OS flaw by actually removing the micro SD card and plugging it directly into the PC. That is fine unless you have one of the newer badly-designed phones without removable SD cards.

It's not really a fair tradeoff, as it requires me to take apart the phone in order to work around it. It makes the phone less secure, because I am prevented from doing what I want to with my own SD card and data. The best improvement for this would be for KitKat to allow users to override this lockdown if they chose.

You come to expect things to be ridiculously hard with IOS, but not Android. This is a step downward. The "loss of convenience" is far from slight.

Something for someone to remember if they have an ICS phone and are looking at one of these new KitKat phones to replace it with.

    1. You should have full access to the SD using a cable and PC. You may need to enable MPT files access by going to the phone's Settings > Storage menu, tapping the USB icon in the top right and choosing MPT. If you are using a Mac, you need to install Google's Android File Transfer app on the Mac.

The security changes only effect removable SD cards, not internal ones.

  9. I found one partial workaround: Have ES File Explorer create its own directory on the SD card. As ES File Explorer isn't crippled, and allows network/etc file access, it can copy files from the PC into this folder.

One place where this downgrade to file handling in KitKat keeps biting me though has to do with podcasts. I download and listen to a lot of podcasts. A certain percentage of the podcasters are too lazy to name their podcasts, and some hosting services such as Talkshoe trash the files. This results in completely meaningless filenames. Thanks to KitKat, I am prevented from repairing these easily and right away. Such operations should "just work" and not require a lot of effort.
