Boost Mobile's Double Data Promotion Extended Until Jan 5

Boost Mobile has extended its Data Boost promotion until Jan 5, 2015. The promo, which was due to end Nov. 3, gives customers twice as much data for $5 less per month than Boost's regular plans. There are three Data Boost plans available:

  • $35/month: unlimited talk, text and data with the first 1GB at high speeds
  • $45/month: unlimited talk, text and data with the first 5GB at high speeds
  • $55/month: unlimited talk, text and data with the first 10GB at high speeds
After the high speed data allowance is used, unlimited data, throttled to 128 Kbps, is available for the rest of the plan month.

The Data Boost plans are available to both new and existing Boost customers. Current customers can switch to one of the new plans using the My Account page on the Boost Website.

Although the Data Boost promotion ends Jan 5, customers who activate or switch to one of the promotional plans before then get to keep the extra data and lower pricing indefinitely, provided then keep their account active and don't change plans.

  1. Does Virgin have any advantages over Boost at all?

    1. 2.5 GB of data on Virgin's $35 plan vs. 1 GB for Boost

    2. $5 iphone autopay discount on VM. Some non-iphone users are being offered the $5 autopay discount too.

You can buy devices with your account balance on VM (so if you can find those increasingly rare 30% off cards, it is like getting a discount on a new phone...not including cashback).

In general, Boost plans are indeed squashing VM's (except for the old $35 2.5GB one).

  2. If you value data, go with Virgin Mobile. If you value voice, go with Boost. I personally dropped Virgin Mobile last Spring since I wanted to upgrade to a Samsung Galaxy S3, but they refused to grandfather me into the $25/month plan (even considering after being a loyal customer for 8 years). So I took my business to T-Mobile and their secret $30/mo unlimited txt, 5GB LTE data + 100 minutes plan. And because it's GSM (unlike Sprint & Verizon's restrictive CDMA phones), if I'm not satisfied with T-Mobile, I can always switch to one of their or AT&T's MNVO.

    1. All of Boost's plans at the same pricepoint have more data, except for the traditional $35 VM plan, which is the only old plan VM kept.

  3. Does anybody know (I live in Florida) if the local sales tax of 7% is always applied via auto pay? Currently I'm on the $40 Shrinkage plan that includes 2.5GB of data and considering the $45 Data Boost plan giving 5GB for $5 more. When I go to the boostmobile website to make the change it says "The Rate is TAX Inclusive". Currently I pay $42.80 each month due to the local sales tax. Will the new plan be $45 exactly or will it be $48.15?

    1. Boost will charge sales tax on auto pay if your state has a tax.

  4. So does that mean the Boost after January 15th is going to switch people off of it automatically or does it stay grandfathered?
