It's a Phone, It's a Tablet! ASUS Padfone X Mini Coming to GoPhone Oct. 24

AT&T announced today that it will launch the ASUS PadFone X Mini for $199.99 on GoPhone Oct. 24.

The PadFone is an unusual phone plus tablet combo that consists of a 4.5 inch screen LTE Android phone and a companion 7" tablet docking station. The phone can be used by itself or you can slide it into a dock in the back of the tablet where it provides the combo's processor, memory and cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth radios. The tablet has its own battery which nearly doubles the phone's battery life when it's docked into the tablet.

AT&T provided the following specs for the PadFone X Mini:
  • Display Smartphone: 4.5-inch IPS+ panel / 854 x 480 FWVGA; Station: 7-inch IPS+ panel / 1280 x 800 WXGA
  • Cameras Smartphone: 5MP (rear); 2MP(front); Station: 1MP (front)
  • Processor 1.6GHz 2x2 Intel Atom Z2560 dual-core processor with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology
  • Operating system:  Android 4.4 (KitKat) with ASUS ZenUI
  • Storage/memory:  1GB RAM; up to 64GB micro SD card supported
  • Network:  4G LTE: B4/B17/B2/B5, Category 3 3G: 850/1900/2100, 2G: 850/900/1800/1900
  • Data-transfer speed: LTE Category 3
  • WiFi: 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth: 4.0
  • GPS: (A-GPS with SUPL 2.0)
  • Battery:  Smartphone: 2060mAh (removable);  Station: 2200mAh (non-removable)
  • Battery life: Smartphone standalone: 15.8 hours, Docked into station 28.3 hours
  • Ports:  3.5mm headphone jack; micro USB
  • Color: Black
  • Dimensions:  Smartphone: 5.20 (L) x 2.61 (W) x 0.25-0.50 (H) inch; Station: 8.02 (L) x 4.70 (W) x 0.44-0.83 (H) inch
  • Weight:  Smartphone: 5.25 oz; Station: 8.81 oz

I like the idea of having all you data instantly available on both the phone and tablet without the need for syncing or setting each device up separately. The PadFone Mini X is innovative not only for its unique form factor but also for using an Intel processor. I believe it's the first Intel powered phone to be offered by a US national wireless operator.

Update Oct 24, 2014: the ASUS PadFone X Mini is now available from AT&T and WalMart.com for $199.99

  1. Can the tablet be used independently from the phone?

    1. No, the tablet is basically just a screen, battery and camera. All the smarts are in the phone.

  2. Do you have to purchase a plan to buy the padfone and can it be used as a Wi-Fi only device.

    1. If you buy on the GoPhone site and you aren't already a GoPhone customer, the site forces you to add a plan. But, AT&T says the PadFone will be available at national retailers like BestBuy where you can buy without a plan.

Android phones generally allow you to bypass activation and use them as WiFi only devices. However, ASUS sells a similar WiFi only tablet for about $130.

    2. Dennis you should link the ME176 on Amazon with your referral code. It's actually a better tablet than the PadFone X with the latest quad core Intel Atom chip. $130.

    3. Yeah, that's the tablet I was referring to. I have the ME181C 8 inch version and it's quite nice.

  5. Thanks for sharing this..
4 band LTE 7 inch phablet.. or just carry the 4.5 phone... if this can work on cricket with just a sim change and they will activate it as a phone... looks like a better deal than the just released zte Grand Max X cricket phablet, and $10 difference would buy the sim card.....
at least the smartphone's got a removeable battery but with the tablet you've got a spare

if this sells maybe a 10 incher will be in the works....some always want more....
will have to check out the 8 inch tablets you've mentioned too....but assume they're wifi only? but if this Asus phone gets some decent reviews.. and the screens ok on the tablet screen... it might suffice for a number of users...

  6. I give them credit for trying something new.

If I were to nitpick, I'd say there needs to be more of a difference between the tablet and the phone. Perhaps if it were a 10" tablet instead. Or the tablet had a keyboard with it

  8. Is this phone UNLOCKED right out of the package? Can I buy, open and put my T-Mobile SIM card into it and use it on their 3G network? Not a fan of AT&T, but like the concept. Thx.

    1. No, the Padfone X Mini is locked to AT&T.

    2. Can it be unlocked after it is activated on AT&T or Straight Talk, for use on T-Mobile for Talk & Text? I use WiFi for Data and prefer to keep my T-Mobile Glad Rewards plan (no longer offered).

    3. AT&T will unlock it after 6 months on AT&T. Straight Talk won't. There are probably unlocking services that can unlock it. Search eBay to find them.
