Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week Oct 26 - Nov 1

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week feature listing all the best US prepaid phone deals in one place.

My Deal of the week is the TracFone LG Optimus Fuel Android phone for $49.99 at BestBuy (online and in stores).

With a regular price of $79.99, the Fuel is TracFone's best entry level Android phone thanks to its up to date Android 4.4 KitKat OS and dual-core 1.2Ghz Snapdragon 200 CPU. Other specs are basic including a 3 MP camera, SD card slot, 3.5" 320x480px screen, removable battery and about 1.7GB of available internal memory.

Like all of TracFone's Android phones, the Fuel runs on the Verizon network and uses the desirable "triple-triple" airtime system where airtime is tripled and then tripled again so that a $20, "60 minute" top-up adds 180 minutes, plus 180 texts, plus 180 MBs of data good for 90 days.

Other especially notable prepaid deals this week include:
  • AT&T Nokia Lumia 635 LTE Windows Phone $79.99 (reg $99.99) at Amazon and Best Buy.
  • Boost Mobile LG Volt LTE Android phone $69.99 (reg $179.99) at ShopCellDeals

    1. That's true. Supposedly it can be unlocked for 99¢ with a code from http://www.ebay.com/itm/331343624365

      Delete
    2. I thought eBay didn't allow unlock codes. Did that change?

      Delete
    3. They started allowing them after Congress passed the bill legalizing unlocking in July..

    4. Why did you pick this code on eBay?

      Delete
    5. It's $0.99 and at least two people two people on the SlickDeals Forum have confirmed it works. If you know of a better, cheaper service feel free to post a link to it.

    6. I don't know of a better service. I was wondering how you found this one?

    7. "Was it $50?"

From all accounts, this is not YMMV, as long as it is in stock. You can scan the price yourself at Target by snapping a picture of the bar code (either on the bottom of the box or the black and yellow tag on the peg) and then holding the pic on your phone under a target scanner.

  2. Yeswap wasn't the FCC serious and implemented rules about prepaid companies unlocking policy! How come Tracfone is getting away without unlocking? I mean they could at least unlock after 6 months or something sheesh. I checked other places and it does seem impossible to unlock Tracfone phones.

    1. I don't know very much about TracFone's unlocking policy. But, here's is what it has posted on its website:

      TracFone Wireless, Inc. Unlocking Policy
      http://www.tracfone.com/includes/content/popup/unlocking_policy.jsp

Some of us think the policy only applies to phones introduced new after January 1, 2014, and you have to have had it in service for one year -- so the earliest you could get a TracFone phone unlocked would be January 2015. But, we’re not sure.

      Can anyone clarify?

      Delete
    2. TracFone's unlocking policy seems clear to me:
Phone model must have been introduced after 1/1/14
12 months paid service on TracFone
The phone "must be deemed by TracFone to be capable of being unlocked."

That last condition lets TracFone deny any unlocking request if they want to. That combined with the 12 month wait makes the TracFone unlocking policy one of the worst in the industry.

FCC doesn't have a rule requiring unlocking. They threatened to create a rule prompting the CTIA, the big four carriers and several regional operators to agree to a voluntary unlocking policy that they will unlock prepaid phones after no more than one year of service together with "reasonable time, payment or usage requirements.". The carriers have until 2/11/15 to implement to publish and implement an unlocking policy that follows the agreement rules. TracFone did not sign CTIA the agreement. See http://www.fcc.gov/device-unlocking-faq for more information.

  3. Metro prices are after rebate but I believe only with the second month of service paid for.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Yep,
Rebate handset must be purchased on MetroPCS.com and activated on a MetroPCS line of service that remains active and in good standing through a second full monthly service payment in order to meet rebate requirements.

The rebate is also in the form a Visa Gift card and not a credit your account.

  8. American-owned and operated Selectel Wireless is offering a free smartphone device with new activations. Selectel is offering the old workhorse Samsung Illusion at no charge with new activations on the $30, $40 and $55 monthly plans, The free smartphone offer is not available for the $15 monthly plan or the $75 yearly plan.

A $25 activation fee applies. In addition, Selectel continues to offer the Samsung Gusto dumbphone device at no charge for new activations on the $30/40/55 monthly plans.

The free smartphone device is available whether you are a new customer to Selectel Wireless, or adding a new line of service as an existing customer.

If you are planning for Selectel's eventual introduction of 4G LTE service, both the Gusto and Illusion operate on the 3G network. At the very least, you could obtain either of these phone/devices at no charge, and then budget/plan for a 4G LTE phone/device when Selectel introduces 4G LTE service.

Selectel Wireless is a Verizon MVNO, using the Verizon postpaid coverage map.

    1. At first glance, cricket appears to be a better deal.

    2. In my opinion, it just depends upon which carrier (Verizon or AT&T) has the best coverage in your area. What I like about Verizon is that it uses the Verizon postpaid coverage map, which is great for areas of the United States where Verizon does not have "native" coverage, and the CDMA roaming agreements with carriers such as Sprint and U.S. Cellular can be used at no additional cost/charge by Selectel customers.

A close relative of mine has a summer home in central Wisconsin. For many years, they were able to roam using their Sprint tri-band phone/device. In that area of central Wisconsin, they were able to roam on an analog carrier. Upon shutdown of most the analog networks within the United States, they had travel two miles or so to pick-up a CDMA signal (roaming).

Once I placed them on Selectel, they were able to use their phone/device right from the inside of their summer home, and didn't have to drive over to the corner market in order to make calls.

Although I'm not a user of AT&T, I see that they have a lot holes in some areas of the United States. On the other hand where AT&T's coverage is good, then Cricket's GSM service would probably work just fine, and you would not need the extensive coverage that Selectel offers.

    3. I agree....if you need VZ postpaid coverage over AT&T native, Selectel is worth looking at.

    4. Hells: I'm a big fan of SELECTEL, but there are some problems which get worse just due to the passing of time. They offer very little data for the price compared to other plans, and they don't allow 4G devices (and have no idea when they will; I asked them).

I strongly recommend SELECTEL for someone with an old phone who doesn't plan to use much data at all. I wish I could recommend for more than that: the deals on their web page look great for 2012, but seem out of date at this time as every modern, viable MVNO and pseudo-MVNO is overtaking them on the mobile information superhighway.

  10. I the that Cricket Wireless is a better deal but the CS at Cricket at the present time is terrible (like TF, H20 etc) . However, I believe that this is a temporary sitiuation ( "growing pains") and will be worked out since the have the resources to fix it (due to ATT ownership).

    2. Verizon prepaid phones like the CPO iPhone 4 do not work on Verizon MVNOs, like PagePlus, Selectel or BYO. The Verizon iPhone 4 is CDMA only so it won't work on Cricket GSM either.

  13. This Verizon price drop also includes the Apple iPhone 4s - 16GB in White & Black (Certified Pre-Owned) to $149.99 before taxes, according to a craigslist listing these devices are now available AT the STORE LEVEL also (call ahead)! On AVERAGE these devices are selling for $105.00 on eBay.

  14. NO, the Verizon iPhone 4 is CDMA technology Cricket Wireless (AT&T) is GSM technology. The Verizon iPhone 4s is CDMA technology, but also with GSM technology built in for INTERNATIONAL USE ONLY and only if it is unlocked by original owner & only through Verizon.
