FreedomPop Adds Free and Paid International Calling Plans

In addition to being the target of acquisition rumors, Sprint freemium MVNO FreedomPop announced the availability of international calling plans this week. As you would expect from FreedomPop there's a free plan which includes 100 minutes of VOIP calls to over 50 countries, including calls to mobile numbers in 14 countries. International text messaging is not available.

The included countries are:

Landlines and Mobiles: American Samoa, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, Greece, Guam, India, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Landlines Only: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, Cyprus, France, French Guiana, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

If you need more minutes there are two paid plans:

  • 300 minutes for $4.95
  • 1000 minutes for $9.95
There are also some country specific plans

  • Mexico $4.99/mo unlimited calls to landlines
  • Mexico $9.99/mo 500 minutes to landlines and mobiles
  • China $4.99/mo 150 minutes to landlines and mobiles
  • China $9.99/mo 400 minutes to landlines and mobiles
  • United Kingdom $4.99/mo 300 minutes to landlines
  • United Kingdom $9.99/mo 800 minutes to landlines
  • Argentina $4.99/mo 200 minutes to landlines
  • Argentina $9.99/mo 500 minutes to landlines

There seems to be a pricing disconnect with some of the country specific plans. For example the $4.99 China plan includes only 150 minutes but the $4.99 global plan covers China and includes 300 minutes.

FreedomPop International calling works with both FreedomPop phones and the Free Talk and Text Android and iOS apps which work with all operators and over WiFi. Update 12/19: international calling is currently not available with the FreedomPop apps.

International calling is not automatically enabled. You need to log into your FreedomPop account on the Web and select the free plan or one of the free ones.

FreedomPop says that the international service will expand to over 100 countries in the coming weeks. FreedomPop also plans offer Global Virtual Numbers starting at $4.99/Mo that will let friends and family in 25 countries to call your FreedomPop number for free

Comment Page :
  1. It does not work for me

  2. how to dial an international number

  3. The UK, Spain and Brazil plans don't make any sense.

  4. Ladies and Gentlemen, no need to depend solely on a carrier for this. Download an app directly from your smartphone from the many VoIP companies available and save even more money.

  5. This offering is more of a convenience for the non tech-savvy
and those without high speed Internet access. This service
    is what I call app-to-phone.

It complements the app-to-app (both caller and called parties
run the same app, such as Skype, Yahoo Messenger, WhatsApp,
Viber, Line, etc) method, which makes for free calls anywhere
in the world if both sides have high speed Internet access.

Another way to do this is if both parties subscribe to a service/app
(Google Voice, UppTalk, MagicJack, SIP calling, etc) which provides both
sides with a virtual US phone number, allowing unlimited free

  6. What happened to the freedompop talk and text app for android phones? None of the links to it work.

    1. It's disappeared for me too. FreedomPop probably pulled it to fix a bug.

    2. nothing on their blog or FB about it.
