GoPhone's Un-Advertised US, Mexico & Canada Monthly Plan Includes International Roaming

AT&T GoPhone has quietly launched a new $55/month US, Mexico & Canada Monthly Plan that lets you call Mexico and
 Canada for 1¢/minute.

Even more interestingly, the new plan also includes international roaming in Canada and Mexico:

  • Calls made within Canada and Mexico and calls from Canada and Mexico to the US and 25 other countries are 1¢/minute.
  • There's no charge for sending or receiving international SMS and MMS messages while roaming in Canada and Mexico.
In other respects the new plan is identical to GoPhone's $45/month plan which includes unlimited domestic calling, unlimited domestic and international text messaging and unlimited data with the first 1GB per month at full speeds, and the rest throttled to 128 Kbps.

The strange thing about this new plan is that it isn't mentioned on the main GoPhone Plans pageicon. It's shown when you activate a new account on GoPhone (first image, click to view full-size) or for existing customers when switching plans (images below). You need an unactivated AT&T SIM ID to see the plan on the activation page and an active GoPhone account to see it on the plan change page so the plan is essentially hidden from the general public. It's as if AT&T doesn't actually want anyone to use this plan!

  2. As I mentioned here a few times before, voice roaming fees between North American carriers are now $12 per 1000 minutes charged between carriers by the second. There are no roaming fee for SMS or MMS.

    1. Wow... so at full price of about $1 a minute to the consumer they are really making a killing on roaming fees.

    2. Correction: T-Mobile is $45-$75 cheaper/month.

  3. T-Mobile lets you add international calling to your whole Simple Choice account, regardless of the number of lines, for either $5 or $10/month. $60-$80 cheaper than the other carriers for 4 lines.

    2. International roaming with unlimited data and text is included in all qualifying Simple Choice plans.

    3. That's not true. Roaming in Canada, Mexico and a number of other countries is available on a per minute basis. Rates are very high however.

    4. "International roaming with unlimited data and text is included in all qualifying Simple Choice plans." Only on postpaid.

    5. Sorry - the last two posts showed up out of order.
Simple Choice (postpaid) and Simple Choice Prepaid plans are not the same.

  4. Well...if the roaming fee that AT&T pays the Canadian/Mexican cell providers are indeed $12 per 1000 minutes as mentioned above, no wonder AT&T doesn't actually want anyone to use this plan, they'll be losing money on it.

    1. I'm very skeptical that roaming between all North American carriers is charged at a fixed wholesale rate of $12/1000 minutes. Roaming rates are negotiated on a carrier by carrier basis. There are dozens of carriers in the ten North American nations. Getting them to all agree to charge each other the same rate seems unlikely and would probably violate price fixing laws in multiple nations.

  5. Any roaming data on this plan - can't tell from the screenshot.

    2. I don't see that any mention of prepaid international data roaming on the AT&T site. Do you have a link to the offer?

  6. Dennis, what about on Harbor Mobile? I think they offer business plans that let you roam on prepaid. No credit check required to join. Although, I think it is probably best to port your number to google voice and activate a new number with them just in case. Let me know your thoughts.

  7. Dennis, AT&T regularly advertises this plan in Spanish-speaking media in the US and keeps it obscure because it's only meant for a subset of the population. If more people discover it, great, but it's not a grand conspiracy to keep people from activating on the plan.

  8. Dennis, look under international data in the first image. Prepaidphonenews.com is using my screenshots that i posted in another forum. I'm going to be in Mexico from dec 18 to jan 6 so i will be testing this plan

  9. This coincides with AT&t's purchase of Mexican operator Iusacell.
