Pure TalkUSA - More Data But No More Rollover

AT&T MVNO PureTalk USA is giving customers on its Simple, Flex and Family plans more data with no price increase. These inexpensive talk and text plans do not include any data in the monthly base price. Customers who wish to use data can purchase add on data plans and it's these add-ons that are getting more data.

  • The $9.95 add-on is going from 150 MB to 400 MB. It also includes 200 MMS (no change)
  • The $19.90 add-on goes from 300 MB to 800 MB plus 400 MMS (no change)
  • The $29.85 450 MB, 600 MMS add-on has been discontinued.
The increased data does come at a cost. The data portion of these add-ons used to rollover and be good until used up. Data now expires after 30 days, so it's use it or lose it. But the 266% percent increase in the amount of data seems like more than adequate compensation for the loss of rollover.

Pure Talk's also made some positive changes to its Simple Plans today;

  • The $5/month Simple 50 Plan is now the Simple 80 plan is with 80 minutes instead of 50.
  • The Simple 250 plan's price was cut from $11.95 to $10 per month for 250 minutes
  • There are new $15/month Simple 500 and $20 Simple 1000 plans with 500 and 1000 minutes respectively. These plans replace to $17.95 Simple 750 plan.

Here are Pure TalkUSA's current plans:

1 PureTalk Simple Plan minutes do not roll over. Add on minutes are available at $10 for 130 minutes. Unused add on minutes do rollover but are used before plan minutes.
2 International calling and texting requires a $10 International Calling Card
3 $9.95/month data and MMS addon provides 200 MMS and 400 MB of data. Also available: 1 GB/ 400 MMS for $19.90. Unused add-on data expires after 30 days.
4 Monthly pay as you go plan, available price points (cost per month/minutes) are $10/130, $20/330, $30/630, $40/1030, $50/1430. Unused minutes roll over. Can be used as a family plan for $5/month per extra line. All lines share the available minutes and texts but data/MMS addons are per line and not shared.

I'm surprised that Pure TalkUSA didn't increase the amount of data included with the data add-ons for the $34.95 and $40.95 Unlimited plans. It's seems backwards to give customers on the most expensive plans only 100 MB for $10 when budget plan customers get 400 MB for $9.95.

  1. I always look at these plans like this and see "too little data for too much $$$" compared to others, and move on...

    1. Verizon ALLSET gives you 3GB of add on data for 20.00. This really is only competitive for VERY light usage. It's impractical for people who use it daily.

    2. how much does one text message cost in terms of money not time, like how many text messages can I get from an 80 minute plan?

    3. 80 minutes x 3 = 240 texts. $5/240 = $0.020833333 (2.1¢) each.

  2. Look again. You have to pay at least $30/month to get at least 400mb of data and a reasonable number of minutes with other MVNO. PureTalk charges $23-28 for Simple 250 or Simple 750. If you don't need unlimited TnT, save some money.

    1. I looked first. Other MVNO's suck as Cricket, $35 a month, more than twice the data, and unlimited talk/text. And this is similar to others I check too. PureTalk isn't a good deal all for data.

  3. Dennis, PureTalk also changed the Simple plans as of today. 80 min. for $5; $10 for 250 min, and new Simple 500 and 1000 plans for $15 and $20. Much better.

    1. great. thank you.
despite what all the naysayers and the fanboys of the other mvnos say in putting down this mvno, this pure talk matches up with my actual usage. it would be like $20 a month for me and it'll still be at&t for me.

      simple 250 ($10) + data ($9.95)

      or

      flex single (130m) ($10) + data ($9.95)
      where unused flex minutes accumulate

the data package is only 400mb but that's okay if using mostly wifi anyways.

and the texts are not unlimited like other mvnos. texts are 1/3 of the value of a minute. but that's still not too bad if you don't do a lot of real texts (except short code texts!!!!) and use an app like whatsapp for family/friends texting.

yeah looks like pure talk would work for me and cut my monthly costs by one third to one half. yea!

    2. one other question:
does pure talk data have its speed at LTE or HSPA+ or 3G?

  6. Do they charge taxes?

  8. PureTalk Simple 250 and 500 plus the data package fills holes in AirVoice and H20 Paygo and their $30/month unlimited TnT plans. I am switching my nephew to Simple 250, and he will save $10/month, or 1/3 of his AirVoice bill.

  9. Can ATT phones be used without being unlocked?

    1. Pure Talk e-mailed and said any ATT phone will work.

    2. That's correct. You can use AT&T phones on any AT&T MVNO.

  10. short codes do NOT work. i only needed a phone to sign in to my job. i have to sign in to my job each day using a short code, otherwise i cannot work. i am extremely disappointed with this article because it says ptel has short codes for anything, however, ptel says they do not support short texts aka short codes aka csc! the only short text/codes they allow are ones sent directly to ptel for ptel services only and then i think google. now i am going to contact my bank to get my money refunded because ptel's service is useless to me.

    1. This post is about PureTalk not PTel.

    2. Short codes tend to be hit or miss. I just tried two TV station's short code alerts on my PTel phone and they both worked. But if it doesn't work with your employer's system you need to find a different operator.

    1. AT&T MVNO's are limited by a ceiling of 8Mbps.

      Delete
    2. That's not true, speeds in excess of 20 Mbps have been reported on both AT&T Straight Talk and H2O. AT&T's own Cricket prepaid brand, which is not an MVNO as it's owned by an operator, has an 8 Mbps cap.
