Cricket SIMs Now Available At Walmart

Prospective Cricket Wireless customers can now order Cricket Universal SIM Activation Kits from Walmart.com. The kits have been available at some Walmart stores for a couple of weeks but just appeared online today. They are priced at $9.88. There's no word on what size SIMs are contained in the kits but as they are described as "Universal" and being "compatible with most GSM devices", I'm guessing they contain all three common SIM sizes; mini, micro and nano.

Cricket GSM SIMs have been available for $10 from cricketwireless.com ever since AT&T took over Cricket in June so their arrival at Walmart.com doesn't open the online channel as it was already open. But it does mark a further move away from Cricket's traditional dealer model toward a more mass market approach. I can't imagine Cricket dealers are happy about having to compete with Walmart.

The activation process with the Walmart SIMs is a little different than with SIMs from cricketwireless.com.

When you order a SIM directly from Cricket, you have to choose and pay for a rate plan at the time of the order. The SIM comes with a phone number assigned based on the zip code you entered when ordering. If you're porting a number, you also give Cricket your current provider's name, account number and passcode at the time of order. When the SIM arrives you still have to call Cricket or go online to activate it or start the port. Cricket only gives you 30 days after placing the order to start the activation process or the SIM becomes disabled. That means that you can't order a SIM and throw it in a drawer to use when you need AT&T coverage for a trip months latter. Having to give porting information before receiving the SIM also made some customers nervous as they were afraid that they would lose service with their old provider before they were up and running on Cricket.

The activation process for the Walmart Cricket SIMs works the traditional way, you order a SIM without a rate plan and when you are ready to activate it you go to cricketwireless.com/join and enter the SIM ID and phone IMEI, choose a plan and if you are porting, provide the account info for your previous provider'. Hopefully, cricketwireless.com will adopt this more conventional approach to SIM sales.icon

  1. Sounds like Gamestop didn't work out and they are following the GoPhone model. I am guessing the Walmart exclusive Huawei Tribute GoPhone sold thousands of units.

    1. The tribute is pretty low end.

    2. For $40, it is well worth it.

  2. I think it is a nano sim with holders to tranform the sim to micro and mini sims.

    1. It is indeed a nano sim with adapters for micro and standard smis. Unfortunately, The adapters can ruin your phone. I just got one caught in my phone, and it will never read a sim card again. Learn from my experience!

    2. Yep. A sim off the site is sized for your phone. These sims are all nanos, with two plastic adapters. I've seen worse adapters, but they all have a change to bend the leads in your phone. I would definitely be careful with these.

  3. I've heard some horror stories about data speeds on Cricket. I just made the switch from VZW Allset Prepaid back to MetroPCS after testing Metro for a week. What a huge coverage improvement! Data speed was not an issue with T-Mobile, just coverage.

    1. The latency can be annoying, but the raw speeds aren't terrible. In my experience it's fast enough to comfortably stream Netflix over HSPA+ or LTE. Nothing like the speed you can get on T-Mobile, but the coverage and building penetration are hugely better. And it's not like the 8Mbps cap is an actual hardship to most users.

(The real Cricket horror stories are of them failing to remember that you've set up autopay, something they've done to me twice now.)

    2. I switched from Virgin Sprint to Cricket a couple of weeks ago.

The data speed DOES very. From a lot faster than Sprint-Virgin,all the way down to something that is still faster than what Sprint-Virgin usually had.

And all the areas I went into with no Sprint Virgin coverage turn out to have Cricket coverage. This includes "inside just about any building" along with entire counties.

    3. Cricket has the same coverage as ATT GoPhone.

Yes, and to paraphrase Jackie Chiles, "it's spectacular"

  5. Cricket fixed something or more than likely added more proxy servers on the seventh. All howardforums cricket users confirm speeds and connextions have dramatically increased. I can confirm mine is consistent top speed up and down now also.

  6. I am unable to activate the Cricket SIM purchased from Walmart. The website says the ICCID (SIM card number) is incorrect and to try another number. Chat and customer service over the phone is worthless. I call four times, the support folks are clueless and keep transferring me and I get disconnected. I suggest buying the SIM directly from Cricketwireless.com or a Cricket store if you want it to work.

    1. Walmart may have forgotten to scan it. Seems to happen pretty often with prepaid phones and SIMs from Walmart. If you bought from it a Walmart Store exchange it and make sure they scan the replacement, the receipt should say something like "activation successful".

  7. I'm trying to activate one of the Wal-Mart Cricket sims online using a brand new, not previously activated, unlocked Moto X.

I get a PSO99 error over and over and over...

I called in and the lady couldn't explain the error and suggested I go into a store to activate. While there are a couple stores relatively close, it's incredibly preferable to activate online (and also within the next 24 hours as a T-Mo plan will lapse tomorrow night). Is this a common issue that I can overcome if I keep trying or should I definitely just go into the store?

I'd prefer not to pay a fee I wouldn't otherwise have to as well.

    1. Try calling 855-619-6021 which is the number for activating GamesStop SIMs but they seem to be able to help with Walmart SIM activation problems to.

If that does not work, the Chat option on Cricket's Contact Us page is generally pretty good for solving problems.
