Cricket Adds Unlimited Calls to Mexico, Including Mobiles, to $50/Month and Higher Plans

AT&T's Cricket Wireless has added unlimited no extra cost calls and MMS picture messages to Mexico for users on plans priced at $50 and up.

There's been no official announcement of the change yet and its not mentioned on Cricket's public website either.  But Cricket customers on the $50 and $60 plans are reporting that their online account management pages (image) now say that their plans include unlimited calls to landlines and mobile phones in Mexico as well as unlimited MMS to Mexico.

Until now Mexican calling was only available on Cricket as part of a $5 or $15 international add-on. The $5 add-on included unlimited calls to landlines in Mexico and 34 other countries, the $15 feature added 1000 minutes to mobiles in Mexico and 28 other countries.

I was able to confirm the changes in a chat session with Cricket customer support. The support agent offered the following statement:

"Cricket is adding Unlimited calls, SMS, and MMS to Mexico on the $50 plans and above, so every customer that is on the $50 plans and above automatically will have unlimited calls text and MMS to Mexico without any extra fee. Cricket international and international Extra will still remain at the current rates and specifications, however calls to Mexico will no longer be part of the usage shown. These start to take effect today"

This is a pretty big perk for Cricket to offer. As far as I know, no other prepaid provider currently includes more than 1000 minutes per month to Mexican mobile phones with any plan. I suspect that AT&T's recent $2.5 billion purchase of Mexican mobile operator Iusacell has made it economically feasible for AT&T and Cricket to offer no extra cost unlimited calls to all Mexican phones.

Update 2/10/15: Cricket issued a press release today confirming that effective 2/11, all $50 (before auto pay and group save discounts) and higher plans will include unlimited calls to landlines and mobile phones in Mexico and unlimited MMS to Mexico.

  1. wow. just got a plan eligible for this.

And wouldn't you know. I have absolutely no reason to call Mexico. Oh well.

  2. I would have liked to see them expand the free SMS to more countries than the few on their list. AT&T prepaid includes over 100 countries vs 35 for Cricket. I too have no need to call Mexico. Maybe their goal is to capture business from all the Illegal criminals crossing the border.

    2. Criminals use phones, what else is new? Will raising the costs of making calls deter crime? I think not.

    3. I guess immigration doesn't have much to do with cell phones, but since we're there: 1. There is now a net outflow of Mexicans from the US to Mexico. 2. About half of the undocumented inflow across our southern border is from Central America, consisting overwhelmingly of women and children fleeing violence, crossing our borders and immediately surrendering to authorities and requesting political asylum -- in other words following the legal procedures that have been set out for them. They are then "detained", (not arrested) their status determined during an immigration hearing, and granted asylum, or deported. 3. Obama is rightfully known as "The Deporter-In-Chief" for having deported far more undocumented immigrants than all other presidents combined. He makes fine speeches but doesn't do much to back them up. Gone are the days when a President could show a little compassion:

Reagan: "I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here even though sometime back they may have entered illegally." 10/28/1984

Obama: "No matter how decent they are, no matter their reasons, the 11 million who broke these laws should be held accountable." July 2010

    4. "...capture business from all the Illegal criminals crossing..."

Glad you made this distinction. Wouldn't want this to have anything to do with legal criminals.

John: There's nothing wrong with calling them illegal aliens, is there?

That's a rather specific and accurate term. The "undocumented" reference is vague at best and incorrect at worse (and if these illegal aliens are being counted, and they are, then they are documented).

    5. @ Dennis Bournique February 10, 2015 at 8:41 AM - Totally agree! Raising the cost on calls does nothing to deter crime! Some people are just so silly!

    2. @ Anonymous February 10, 2015 at 11:22 AM - With their shady business practices and poor customer service, I also urge people to stay away from América Móvil MVNOs, to include PagePlus, StraightTalk, Net10, and TracFone!

    1. No, the new feature (on Smart, Pro, and Advanced?) only lets you call and text Mexico from the US at no extra charge. You can Roam in Mexico for $10/month -- gives you 100 min calling and 100 SMS to Mexican and U.S. numbers, no MMS or videos.

I'm wondering if free roaming in Mexico is next. When ATT acquired lusatell, ATT Chairman and CEO , Stephenson, said that ATT plans to create the first ever North American Mobile Service Area. "It won't matter which country you're in or which country you're calling - it will be one network, one customer experience."
