  1. Dennis, with major banks dropping support for Windows Phone, what's the outlook in your opinion?

    1. That's hard to say. Microsoft has poured billions into Windows Phone without gaining significant market share. They know that the PC OS and software business is in decline and mobile (and cloud services) are the future. I think they will continue to push WP until they either achieve success or WP becomes a big enough drag on profits that institution investors pressure them to give it up.

In the meantime enjoy the low subsidized prices on Windows Phones.

    2. microsoft's investment in cyanogen indicates they may go the forked android route to have a more viable OS for future microsoft phones to distribute microsoft apps while also having access to popular current apps that are being made for android -- since those other apps are not being developed for windows phone anymore. microsoft may go the same route like amazon is doing but better with the forked android. the game is in apps and not the OS. and microsoft needs to change the OS to better distribute microsoft apps because microsoft is losing the OS game. BUT microsoft already owns patents in android that microsoft is forcing cell phone manufacturers to pay licensing fees to microsoft for. it's like microsoft owns a good portion of android already and microsoft might as well try to take it all away from google. lol

      Delete
    3. ha! microsoft makes more money from patent licenses from android than the puny money that microsoft gets from windows phone.

google gets no licensing fees for the use of android by itself (without google play & other official google apps), but since microsoft patents are in android, then microsoft is in the android licensing business anyways!

in five years, expecting to see news articles talking about how microsoft hijacked android from google.

    4. Starting with Windows 10 the phone OS won't be called Windows Phone anymore, just Windows 10. Microsoft is pushing for the same apps across PC, mobile and Xbox, Android can't do that. I prefer Android phones myself, but like most people I also use a Windows PC. The idea of one UI with all of the same apps on all of my devices does sound like the future to me. I think Apple is going this way as well, iOS and Mac OS X may soon be one in the same with one OS for iPhone, iPad and iMac. Only Microsoft and Apple can pull this off right now. I can't imagine Android replacing the PC or Mac.

    5. Forbes calls the actions of Chase and Bank of America "Dumb Moves," and says that the actions may show a lack of strategic planning.

Wells Fargo, in contrast, is welcoming Microsoft Windows phone users to switch to its bank branches.

    6. I agree. I can't imagine Android replacing the PC or Mac.

However, Google has recently begun the process of tying Android and Chrome OS together. I understand that as of Fall 2014, there were 4 Android apps available that could be downloaded and run on Chromebooks.

    7. I would use a forked Android based on Cyanogen. I do not use Google apps and services; my phone has Amazon app store and apps, and I use them instead. I like the changes Amazon made to Fire, but I don't want that phone or fork now. Nokia is still making some nice phones, but I don't like the cheap models like the 635. I really like the way Mac OS and iOS work so seamlessly now with 10.10.x and iOS 8.1.x. You can answer a call on the laptop, then walk out the door with the iPhone, without breaking off the call. Send or answer sms from either platform on the same thread. Pick up a FaceTime call on the computer, iPhone or iPad. Take an iPhone pix and a minute or so later (if on WiFi) it just appears in iPhoto on the iPad and MBPro. Beam that photo to the TV with any of those devices. That is the future. Google Android and WinPhone 8.1 can do some, but not all of that. MSFT needs to do it too. And they don't want to pay to do it via Google services. A fork makes sense, if they can pull it off. More $Bs ahead.

    8. Chase and Bank of America are already known to be the two worst banks in the country. Always on the news either for ripping off their customers or for getting in trouble with the government. There are a lot of reasons to find another bank aside from Windows Phone support.

    9. I don't think Chrome OS and Chromebooks have been anymore successful than Windows Phone has been. Google is probably replacing Chrome OS with Android, they already replaced Google TV with Android TV late last year.

    10. Dennis said: 'That's hard to say. Microsoft has poured billions into Windows Phone without gaining significant market share"

Yeah, you have to wonder if anyone WANTS Windows Phone? Or the only reason it has made any headway is that Microsoft has made it less intolerable, and it is so often on nifty phones like these Nokias.

But maybe it is the "Mello Yello" of phone OS's. Something that is only present due to contract obligations, but when given the choice, people end up "choosing" the real thing, the "Mountain Dew".

      Delete
    11. In the future there won't be any phone OS's, there will only be OS's for desktops, laptops, tablets and phones. Microsoft and Apple will offer one OS for all of their devices, Google might do the same but I don't know how Android will compete with the PC and Mac.

    1. Not really. It seems that every other week new unlocked LG G2's can be found for $210 or so. That is still a great phone even by todays standards.

  4. The AT&T version of the Lumia 635 can be used on Cricket's great new plans without the need to unlock the phone. At $53.97 at Walmart why pick the Boost version when Cricket offers much better coverage at the same price as Boost's plans. The Boost version can only be used on Boost, while the AT&T version works out of the box on any AT&T MVNO. Which is the better deal?

  5. Will the unlocked LG G2 work with T-mobile?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes of course, that's the point of unlocking, You might only get 2G in some places where a T-Mobile gets 3G on the AWS band but it would work.

  6. Dennis, I got the Lumia 635 on Boost this weekend. At my home I get 3 bars of LTE signal on the LG Tribute & HTC Desire 510. With the Lumia I get anywhere from "no service" to 2 bars of 3g signal. Can you tell me why this might be? Is the Lumia missing certain bands? Thanks!

  7. I had the at&t lg g2 on T-Mobile and the phone showed 2g 4g and LTE , maybe it was my location but it worked perfect.

  8. The AT&T Fusion 3 seems to be the same phone as the AT&T Tribute, does anyone know why this phone has two names?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I suspect AT&T or Walmart renamed it to prevent confusion with Boost and Virgin Mobile's LG Tribute.

    2. Is this phone any better than the ZTE Z998?

    3. It is if you like Windows Phone better than Android. Both phone's specs are similar, the main difference is the OS.

    4. "Is this phone any better than the ZTE Z998?"

Yes. A little better and much cheaper.

    6. The ATT Tribute was exclusive to Walmart during the Christmas season. Afterwards, it was renamed the Fusion 3 but is the same phone.

  9. It's funny, Windows tablets cost more than many Android tablets but Windows phones are going for half the price of similar Android phones. Even funnier, Windows phones get OS updates, while most Android phones don't. Android may have the upper hand right now, but if Microsoft did a better job of marketing Windows phone they could turn it around. Unless you're willing to pay around $100 a month on a contact plan (and I know many who are) or spend $650 for an iPhone, Apple's iOS isn't an option. Which only leaves Android or some other OS like Windows or something else. The market needs and wants more than one affordable OS option and Windows could be that option, if Microsoft gets their act together and shows the world what Windows could be.

    1. Well, that is a Big If. MSFT spent years telling everyone that Cloud would never take off, was insecure, etc. And now all those Surface RT and Surface 2 owners learned that they will NOT get Windows 10, maybe just a couple of new features. Dead end machines, unlike Apple, who gives free OS updates for years. Just ask Windows users how they liked learning Windows 8.x (or why they downgraded back to 7). Or whether they plan to buy a Surface 3 Pro for $800. "Laptop replacement?" I'll bet the laptop companies love that line ;-)

    1. Really, is that true?

      Delete
    2. I don't think so. Numerous people on Slickdeals bought the phone for $149.99 outright, no contract required. Probably a moot point now as the phone is out of stock online and unavailable at any of the stores I checked. It's probably still available in a few stores so I'm leaving my listing up until BestBuy delists it.
