Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week Feb 22 - Feb 28

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring all the best US prepaid phone deals.

My Deal of the week pick is the Verizon Motorola Moto X 32GB XT1060 32 GB Developer Edition LTE Android phone for $199.99 brand new from eBay seller mobilepros1.

This is the 2013, 1st gen Moto X that originally sold for $499.99. It features a dual core 1.7 Ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 4.7" 720x1280px screen, 10 MP autofocus main camera with flash and 2MP front camera. It features Active Display, which lights up the phone's screen when you pick it up to show missed calls, texts and upcoming calendar events.

The Moto X runs Android KitKat with an upgrade to Lollipop expected soon. It's rootable and the bootloader is unlockable for installing custom ROMs. It works on Verizon Prepaid as well as Verizon MVNOs Page Plus, NET10 and Straight Talk. It's also an unlocked GSM phone that will get 3G pretty much anywhere in the world. It will also work on the T-Mobile and AT&T networks although not optimally as it's missing T-Mobile's main 1700 3G band and most of AT&T's LTE bands.

  1. "Unlocked AT&T LG G2 D800 32GB LTE Android phone (new) $209.99 on eBay (orig $599.99)"

Technically it is the unlocked TMo not the unlocked AT&T version.

    1. No edit of this? It is the D801 (T-Mobile) not the D800 (AT&T).

The 2nd gen with LTE should be out soon. This price should drop or many users might opt for the newer one.

  3. I got my daughter the Moto X1060 when she was on Verizon. Now she is using Consumer Cellular with her husband and she has never seen LTE, only H+ for data. Apparently we don't have LTE Band 4 around here, at least where she travels. I don't think AT&T coverage map shows the Band 4 areas now. Anybody know where to find AT&T Band 4 coverage?

    1. Apparently there is an FCC site that shows the licenses in each zipcode. It isn't easily readable, but that will definitely give you an answer.

The Moto X for VZ doesn't have AT&T LTE bands, correct? Isn't what you are seeing to be expected?

      Delete
    2. Thanks - I will look for the FCC site. The Moto XT1060 has one of the two main LTE bands that AT&T uses, band 4 (the other one is band 17). They also have a little LTE coverage on band 5 and band 2, supported by the GSM XT1053. See phone details on phonescoop.com

    3. Edit: I should have just stated AT&T primary LTE band is 17, and band 4 is only used in some areas. Found this old article, which is probably out of date:

      http://www.totalwireless.com/wps/portal/home

But, since the formal launch is supposed to be several weeks away, not all of the website is working yet.

  8. I would avoid any America Movil cell phone company. They are known to defraud their customers. Look at the reviews for their other brands including straight talk, net10, tracfone, simple mobile, safelink wireless.

  9. @anonymous: carriers can pretty much make up their own rules about when to provide an unlock. And the rules can be complicated and difficult to meet (usually you have to be active on the service and have been a paying customer for a certain number of months). To unlock the S3 I bought, I paid $16 to an outfit named "Blowfish Unlocks" that I've done a few unlocks with in the past - I haven't gotten the code yet, but it's normal for it to take a few days.

  10. I wanted to buy the Verizon HTC One M7 earlier, but stopped when I found out that their 3G UMTS bands were 900/2100 MHz. I may still buy it because of their speakers.

I'm currently on Cricket but will move to Straight Talk VZW LTE once my Cricket balance is exhausted. (I got a 4-months supply of the ST $25 - after discount monthly unlimited cards). After that, I may go back to Cricket.

The VZW Moto X is very tempting though.

    1. There isn't any mention of "2 yr contract required" like it does on the true contract phones. Has anyone bought one of these for Verizon?

      Delete
    2. I don't see the BestBuy AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III for $149 in this list anymore.

I can confirm that I bought one yesterday and no contract was required. It's still on the BestBuy website, so I don't think that there are inventory problems.

      Delete
    3. I took the S3 listings down because of doubts about whether they were contact free. Let us know if you are able to activate yours on prepaid

      Delete
    4. This is stated at the bottom of the Best Buy Galaxy S3 page:
"Phone activation required before use. Carrier activation fees may apply. Requires a minimum data service starting at $20/month. Early termination fees will be prorated, starting at $325 minus $10 for each full month of service commitment completed."

      Delete
    5. I don't have any active AT&T-based SIMs, but both a Lycamobile and a T-Mobile SIM worked in the AT&T S3 that I bought at BestBuy yesterday after I used a 3rd party unlock code. I only paid for the phone - there was no activation and no service agreement. I don't think that was an oversight, because the clerk mentioned that he had to double check if an agreement was needed before handling over the phone.

Before unlocking, I tried using the phone with an inactive H2O SIM I have lying around, and I didn't get an unlock prompt on start up, and when I tried making a call I got an "Emergency Calls Only" message. I don't know if that information has much value though.

But I'm pretty sure if I put in an active H2O or GoPhone SIM, they would work just fine (and probably would have before the unlock).

      Delete
    6. Where did you get that unlock code and how much was it?

      Delete
    7. I got the unlock from an outfit called "Blowfish Unlocks", it was $16 via PayPal and took about a day (they say it'll take from 1-3 days). I have used them to unlock several phones. In one case they were unsuccessful, and refunded the fee (note that the refund was to my "Blowfish Account", and I used it for a subsequent unlock - I'm not sure what it would have taken to get the funds refunded all the way back to PayPal).

Anyway, I consider my experiences with them to be quite good.

As an aside - I've often wondered how those businesses operate. Do they actually run a brute force crack, do they have databases where they look up the IMEI and get the unlock code back (in which case, why isn't it always nearly instant?), do they 'contract' with employees of the carriers and pay them to get the unlocks illicitly? Why do Lumia unlocks cost $40 and LG unlocks cost $2? How does this work?

Dennis - if you know any of this, you should write an article. I'm sure a lot of people would find it interesting.

  13. I would be very interested to read an informative article about phone unlocking companies as well.

  14. Yes Dennis I would like to learn more about unlocking and the unlocking business too. It seems so many of these companies come and go I don't know who you can trust.

    1. You probably won't see an article revealing the unlocking industry's secrets. Unlocking services are not going to going their methods to potential competitors like you and I.

My theory is that most unlocking codes are obtained by bribing phone manufacturers or operators employees for either the codes themselves or for backdoor access to databases containing the codes. The price differences are probably related to the relative ease of getting the codes as well as supply and demand.

As for finding reputable and inexpensive unlockers, I've had good luck searching handset model specific forums on xda-developers.com for stories of successful unlocks. Most unlocks seem to be sold on eBay where you can check a seller's feedback and how long they have been in business.

      Delete
    2. Why is it anyone can buy unlock codes for phones locked by big wireless carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile, but not for Net10 and Straight Talk phones?

      Delete
    3. TracFone REALY doesn't want their phones to be unlockable. They say that they can't even unlock them. Maybe they request manufacturers to not build the phones with no way to unlock them.

      Delete
    4. Some codes are calculated using the ESN/IMEI and a formula. If you have the formula, you can easily calculate the unlock code. Other phones like the MetroPCS LG L70 have four different things that can be locked and unlocked. You have to have the right type of unlock code to switch carriers. That phone only gives you three chances to enter the right code.

  16. Aside from the Apple store what's the least expensive way to buy a new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus without a contract?

    1. Which is the cheapest and easiest option, buy a new iPhone 6 from Boost, Verizon or somewhere else?
      Any carrier works for me.

      Delete
    2. Boost is $100 cheaper than Apple but Boost iPhones only work on Boost and Boost won't unlock them until after a years service on Boost.

      Delete
    3. Which carriers will the Boost iPhone work on after its unlocked?

Didn't Verizon used to sell no-contract iPhones at a discount?

      Delete
    4. The Boost iPhone 6 is Model A1549. Unlocked it will work on AT&T, T-Mobile and just about any network in the world. It supports the following bands:
      CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (with 800, 1700/2100, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands).
      UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz),
      GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
      4G LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29.

Verizon sells certified preowned old model (5s and earlier) iPhones pretty cheaply but AFAIK has always changed full price for new, current model iPhones.
