Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week Mar 1 - Mar 7

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring all the best US prepaid phone deals.

My Deal of the week pick is the T-Mobile version of the Nokia Lumia 635 LTE Windows Phone for $49.99 at BestBuy. The regular price is $129.99.

Although Lumia 635s for other carriers are readily available for around 49.99, this is the first time I've seen the T-Mobile model this cheap.

Lumias are relatively expensive, $20 or more, to unlock so it pays to get a version specific to the network you use. The T-Mobile Lumia will also work on T-Mobile MVNOs like PTel, Ulta and Ting without unlocking.

The 635 has excellent specs for a $50 phone. There's LTE, a 4.5 inch 480 x 854 pixel Gorilla Glass screen, quad-core 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon 400 processor and a 5MP autofocus camera. It comes with the current 8.1 version of the Windows Phone OS 8.1, can run the Windows 10 Technical Preview now and should be upgradable to the Windows 10 production release when  it's available.

Other especially notable prepaid deals this week include:

  1. In the last week or so I have started to see $3 unlock codes for Lumias, including the 635, sold on eBay by sellers with good ratings. I have not tried one of these.

  2. The Sprint Prepaid LG Tribute under Amazon is actually $45.99.

The Virgin Mobile Tribute at Best Buy is $79.99.

  3. I would like to remind everyone that all AT&T phones can be unlocked for free at the AT&T unlock site.
    https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/#/
Just choose Non-AT&T Mobility Customer. I believe current AT&T phones activated on an AT&T mvno cannot be unlocked until they are removed from service. I tried unlocking a Samsung a157V flip phone that is on H20 and no go, but I've unlocked an iPhone 3G and a Nokia Lumia 635 that were not activated on any service without any problems.

    1. True, although prepaid GoPhones do need to be active on GoPhone for six months to be eligible for unlocking.

    2. "True, although prepaid GoPhones do need to be active on GoPhone for six months to be eligible for unlocking."

That doesn't seem to be the case in practice. I have gotten 2 new lumia 520's unlocked with that link and I've never had gophone or AT&T. Posters on slickdeals have stated that they've gotten their new 635's unlocked in about 4 hours.

      Delete
    3. he's not saying you have to be on gophone.

if you have a gophone phone or if you are on gophone and want at&t to unlock your at&t locked phone, then you need to fulfill the six month requirement.

if you don't have a gophone phone or if you are not on gophone, then go through at&t and so long no unpaid bills for the phone at at&t then you should be good to go.

personally myself would just find a cheap unlock on ebay or amazon. it's great that cheap unlocks for at&t phones are back.

    4. He said that "GoPhones do need to be active on GoPhone for six months to be eligible for unlocking" That is not true in practice (you can get a GoPhone and get it unlocked today). I'm not sure what your point is.

    5. I will add that to fully replicate this, you should ask for the unlock before putting any sims in it. Regardless, the original point still stands: GoPhones are being unlocked with no paid service at all.

    6. When I check "Non-AT&T Mobility Customer" and enter the IMEI, the IMEI number box turns red and I cannot enter the Brand / Model or proceed after all other info is filled in.

    8. Thanks for posting this! I was just able unlock a Lumia 520 I had lying around for free using the "Non-AT&T Mobility Customer" screen.

I wish I had known about this last week when I unlocked an AT&T Galaxy S3 - it might have saved me $16.

    1. Yes you will probably need to change the data APN and MMSC but that's easy on WP

    1. Can the Net10 Pop Icon be used on MVNOs?

      Delete
    2. Probably, Most NET10, Straight Talk and TracFone 3G CDMA-V Android phones do work on PagePlus, Selectel, BYO, etc But I have not heard of anyone trying the Pop Icon.

I think that the TracFone LG Ultimate 2 might be a better choice than the Pop Icon, it seems to get better reviews. I've seen several reports that the Pop Icon stutters badly playing videos or action games.

When activating a TracFone, Net10 or Straight Talk Android phone on a Verizon MVNO you need to use the hexadecimal MEID not the decimal one.

The ability to activate other TracFone family phones on non-TracFone MVNOs is loophole that TracFone will probably eventually close.

    1. Exciting news, but then I looked at the S6 vs S5 specs seriously for the first time. It doesn't look good, especially the areas where the phone is a step backward, instead of an improvement:

      http://www.androidcentral.com/galaxy-s6-versus-galaxy-s5-spec-comparison

  7. Phone recommendations based on these specs please: Android 4.0 and up, but not KitKat, so no 4.4, 1.5GB or more of RAM (so, not internal storage), min. 8GB of internal storage, has an expansion card slot, has a removable battery, costs up to $175, though $99 to $150 is preferred, and can work with a prepaid carrier that offers a monthly prepaid plan of $35 to $40.

The phone can be unlocked or locked to a prepaid carrier that offers a monthly plan in the above price range.

    2. I think you'll need to find a used phone. This comes lose, but has KitKat. http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Desire-816-Virgin-mobile/dp/B00KR0VJVM

Getting a new phone with > 1GB of RAM for under $175 won't be easy. Used might be the better route in looking for phones that don't have KitKat anyway.

    5. I think the 1.5gb + $175 + no kit kat excludes a lot of phones.

      Delete
    6. Why no Kit Kat? Is it the design/security flaw in which it bans you from writing data to your own MicroSD card? Or is it something else?

      Delete
    7. To "Anonymous" at March 1, 2015 at 8:52 PM, you nailed it. That's exactly the reason why.

      Delete
    8. That's a horrible design flaw. I rooted my S5 pretty soon in. Was painless, and so far haven't seen any problems. I did it solely to enable the ability to write to my SD card.

I've read it is part of making Android a lot more like IOS, and a lot harder to use, by taking away file manager abilities.

      Delete
    9. Limiting apps to only write to their own folders is part of Google's effort to make Android more secure so it will be more acceptable to enterprise and government buyers.

As you mentioned, knowledgeable users who understand and accept the risk can easily defeat the restriction by rooting. Personally I won't buy an Android device unless its rootable.

  8. Bestbuy is selling the AT&T Samsung S3 SGH-I747 for $150 with no contract. Comes with Android 4.0, 2GB RAM, 16GB flash. I got mine unlocked for $16, but the posts above indicate that maybe AT&T will do it for free.

I did not need to get a contract and the phone is working great on T-Mobile. Should work on any AT&T-based carrier without an unlock, and works fine on T-Mobile after the unlock. However it doesn't support the T-Mobile AWS 1700/2100 HSPA frequency. But it does support T-Mobile's LTE band 4.

    1. Best Buy's website indicates the phone cannot be ordered online. The zip codes I tried showed the phone as not available; however, the page kept saying I had timed out with each zip code. Doesn't look like the page is working correctly.

    2. I see now that the "Pebble Blue" S3 is only available for store pickup and the "White" S3 appears to require a contract.

  9. You don’t have to pay $700 for a new phablet phone if you know how to tweak or root Android. Check out the startup company OnePlus who’s “One” GSM World phone costs between $300 and $350. It’s comparable to, or exceeds a Note, Galaxy or M8. Their phones and popular accessories are still in limited production so you have to go to the OnePlus forum and ask for an “Invite” before you can purchase. They recently started having Tuesdays as open buying days which is how I bought mine a few weeks ago. I use it on Cricket Wireless no problem at all. The 64 gigabyte One I bought is great for me. I rooted it right away and transferred all of my apps from an old Galaxy S2. I no longer run out of RAM since I now have 3 gigabytes instead of two. Going with OnePlus is not for the faint of heart. It’s a startup company and there’s no telling what the future holds for them. I suggest that you browse their forums thoroughly before making a decision to buy. www.oneplus.net

    1. Why doesn't OnePlus just sell the phones? The invite/membership thing is a major turnoff, making me think of Amway pyramid scams.

Usually those who just don't outright sell things aren't quite on the level. It certainly is consumer-hostile.

  12. I have Ptel and I never knew you could use T-Mobile no-contract phones on it. Is there any official policy anywhere about this? If this is for real, gives me a few new options to upgrade.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think that PTel's contract with T-Mobile allows then to say that T-Mobile phones work but I can personally confirm that they do.

Locked phones are programmed to only work with SIMs that have specific combinations of Mobile Country Code and Mobile Network Code (MCC/MNC). PTel SIMs have the same MCC/MNC (310/260) as T-Mobile USA SIMs so they are accepted.
