TracFone Makes It Official - BYOP LTE Phones Are Now Supported

It's been possible to use Verizon LTE phones on TracFone for over a month, but TracFone has never officially acknowledged it. That's finally changed. Yesterday a new "Now you can bring your 4G LTE smartfone to Tracfone" banner started appearing on TracFone's BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) page.

The BYOP page also has a link to buy a CDMA LTE Activation kit for 99¢. According to ad copy on the site the kit is "Compatible with most 4G LTE and 3G CDMA Phones. An Airtime Service Plan is required for activation. Kit includes: Nano, Micro and Standard CDMA LTE SIMs." Shipping is $4.95. Add a $39.99 airtime card to qualify for free shipping

I believe that TracFone CDMA BYOP has the same limitations as other Verizon MVNO's: no non-Verizon phones and no Verizon Prepaid phones unless they have been used on Verizon Prepaid for at least six months. In addition, the TracFone BYOP page says that BlackBerrys are not allowed.

Don't expect blazing fast LTE speeds either. Users have reported typical Verizon MVNO LTE speeds of 5 Mbps or less.

  1. What does being limited to 5mbps prevent anyone from doing?

    1. You can still stream HD video at those speeds. Still, I'm not going to give TF my business.

    2. Agreed. I should probably 'Never Say "Never"', but it would take a lot for me to overlook the incredible rudeness from ST (when I had the audacity to try to unlock an old Nokia E71, Fer Chrissake) and again do business with TF.

Besides, their deal just isn't that good anymore. I think as cell phone service becomes more and more of a prepaid, easily priced and compared commodity, the Big 4 owned MVNO's will be able to lower their prices to the point where the independent MVNO's like TracFone, simply will not be able to compete. Think Cricket's Group Save rates compared to TracFone companies. Consumers should be OK, as long as the DOJ continues to resist monopoly Mega Mergers, like AT&T's attempt to buy T-Mobile in 2011.

    3. John,

Where else can you get cell service for $100 per year?

    4. "...the independent MVNO's like TracFone,..."

I know what you are trying to say, John. Independent of the Big 4..... However, Tracfone itself is just a marketing brand of the fourth largest mobile network provider on the planet...

So in regards to your point, nothing to worry about in terms of being able to complete, as Tracfone's company, American Movil, is in fact larger than all of the American "Big 4"

Tracfone, like the rest of Movil, is actually in a better position to complete, adjust, and fight back than the Big 4 are!

If you want to talk about truly independent MVNOs and the impact this market has on them, look at the ones like Selectel, PTel, and many others that are actually small and independent.

This surprised me too, in the research where I just found that American Movil is only exceeded in subscribers by Vodaphone, Airtel, and 3 that operate in eastern Asia.

    5. Block,
Lots of carriers offer service for less than $100/year including Airvoice, PTel, H2O, T-Mobile Prepaid, Selectel, BYO, Lycamobile and several others.

    6. Selectel (as Dennis pointed out) has the $75 Yearly Plan with 2000 minutes and 2000 texts for 365 days. On the FULL Verizon network (roaming included free). Better deal for less money.

  3. this is great. will now want to get a verizon iphone 5 or 5s to put on tracfone.

however, one bad thing about tracfone is that refills with the triple buckets can be problematic. maybe it's fixed now or will get the attention it needs with tracfone now wanting to attract 4G LTE phones. for each of the refills for my iphone 4 on tracfone, had to eventually get help from tracfone's executive resolution department because one bucket or two buckets of the triple buckets did not actually refill. my most recent problem was two of the buckets lost everything -- from 600+ minutes and 600+ MB data going to zero minutes and zero data from one day to the next day when there was really very little usage on my part. IMHO, putting a smartphone on good old cheap tracfone can be very very economical but tracfone has turned out to unreliable for me in terms of the hit or miss with the triple-bucket refills. good for a secondary phone that you can pack the rollover refills on (while praying the refill really refills and really stays there until actually used), but not for a primary phone that you depend on because of the unreliability of the refills and also because of the incompetence of the tracfone's lower-tier frontline customer service people who you want to bypass to get some real help from tracfone's higher and more capable corporate resolutions department.

  5. In addition, I wonder if AT&T really has any interest in signing a contract with TracFone for GSM access? America Movil and AT&T parted ways last year, and then AT&T bought Cricket and has been pumping a lot of money it.

  6. Dennis, it doesn't appear that track phone is very competitive in today's world. Maybe their niche is the light user of cell phone service. One can argue that a card from tracfone today looks the same as 5 years ago with the same expensive pricing. How does their per minute or per unit pricing compare to other carriers? Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In the PayGo world, TracFone triple-triple is quite competitive, especially if you use roughly equal numbers of minutes MBs and texts.

Assuming you could use all three buckets at an equal rate, the per unit price of a minute, text or MB of data ranges from 3.7ċ with the $19.99 60 minute card to 2¢ with the $79.99 450 minute card.

      Delete
    2. Dennis: Can you use the One-Year Tracfone PINs with triple-triple BYOP to get a lower rate per unit than 2c?

      Delete
    3. Yes, the $199.99 one year card is 1500 minutes. Tripled that's 4500 minutes + 4500 texts + 4500 MB = 13500 unit.s $199.99/1350 = 1.5¢/unit

      Delete
    4. Thanks, Dennis. Is the 800 minute plan for $119.99 tripled also? Or, is that just the $99.99 400 minute plan with a $19.99 Double Minute card added?

      Delete
    5. The $119 card is a $99.99 400 minute plan with a $19.99 Double Minute card added. It will only give you 1200 minutes/texts/MBs on a triple-triple phone.

  7. My guess is that Tracfone continues to do OK because of their widespread availability and visibility. The typical person doesn't read Prepaid Phone News (sorry Dennis!), but they do shop at WalMart and the corner convenience store where they see Tracfones and refills handy right by the register. Sure, they might not be the cheapest, but for low-minute users or someone who needs a phone right away they are probably the most convenient.

    1. Yes, I need 10 lotto scratch offs, 2 packs of Marboro Reds, and a $20 Tracfone card. LOL. I think the appeal is to the low cost, light user of cell phones where long-term thinking is not on the forefront of concern. I tend to think long-term in terms of my spending, I hate contracts, and try to get the most bang for my smartphone buck. Tracfone may suit others, just not me. now, if we just do something about insurance, taxes, gas prices, electricity.............

    2. well i use tracphone because i dont have to pay a monthly bill or pay per month that i choose to use tracphone in my research is the only company to truly let you pay when ever you want and keep your service active and there customer service is yes not the best but its better than cricket or net10 by far but u have to understand smaller companies cant offered the really nice staffing like at&t or Verizon plus there phone are cheap and reliable it best to spend 30 dollars on a phone and have it fall on the floor and not break(i person walked in the ocean and put my phone throw a paper shredder still works great) than to down 400-600 dollars on a new phone and the smallest ding breaks the whole glass screen even in a case so yes Tracphone is in the go for competing against the big 4

  9. AT&T removed its representatives from America Movil's Board of Directors, sold its stock in America Movil, and bought Lusacell and Nextel Mexico, direct competitors to AM. This break up was widely reported in the news. . . . The phones which you listed run on NET10 and Straight Talk, not TracFone, and those agreements with NET10 and Straight Talk were signed prior to the split and are still being honored. . . . Many people who own feature phones and post on Turk Forums complain that TracFone only wants to hand out T-Mobile SIM cards nowadays. It is very difficult to get TracFone to send an AT&T SIM card.

    1. A Verizon postpaid SIM can't be activated on TracFone. You would need to activate a TracFone family SIM on TracFone.

Also, I don't know if TracFone would allow you to activate an IMEID that's currently active on the Verizon network. They never allowed that with 3G but if they accepted the MEIS and gave you a NAC you might be OK.

BYOP phones use the same triple-triple billing as TracFone phones.

You can and should do activations and port ins and everything else related to your account on the TracFone website. Avoid calling TracFone unless you encouter a problem you can't fix online.

If you have to call and reach someone who isn't being helpful or making sense, hang up and call again. You always get someone different and some of them know what they are doing.

Second, what is the process for activating new service and porting the # over to TF? I can't seem to find anything on TF's site that shows how to do it.

Third, if I buy a $199 365 day plan (1500 minute plan) I will get 4500 minutes, 4500 text and 4.5GB in web usage for one year, correct? Say I buy this on 5/20/2015, these minutes are good until 5/20/2016, right? What happens if I have left over minutes, text, etc? Do they roll over as long as i buy another card? Could i buy a $9.99 30 minute card to continue using the minutes that were rolled?

    1. Never call TracFone if you can avoid it. Use the link in the post to buy an CDMA LTE SIM activation kit online.

Port your number and activate the SIM by clicking the Activate button on the TracFone site.

The $199 365 day plan (1500 minute plan) will give you 4500 minutes, 4500 texts and 4.5 GB. If you apply it on 5/20/15 it will expire 365 days later which is 5/19/16.

Unused minute, text and data balances will rollover if you add more airtime before the current airtime expires.

The issue is that when I go to purchase the activation kit with sim, access, code, I get an error message that my purchase cannot be completed. The credit card is fine and I've tried a debit card that is fine and get the same message. Transferring to a BYOP device like an iPhone from any Tracfone should transfer everything including your balance.

I still have 1 active Tracfone & 2 that are on Cricket.... anyway, it has been my experience with Tracfone, when transferring from feature phone to feature phone (like just getting a new phone), and doing it online, that all the minutes do not transfer - like they try to cheat you out of hundred of minutes. I then back out of the system & do it over the phone. The customer service person always asks me how many minutes - they know d*mm well how many points I have. ... Agreed, it goes very quick over the internet, if you don't mind forfeiting lots of minutes. Expect to spend an hour on the phone. The reps are hit or miss just like Dennis says.

  32. Hi Dennis, and everyone else:

I've read all of the above, and I've devoured the Tracfone website. I've run across an inconsistency that I assume is just "old website verbiage catching up with reality" but I wanted to check here first.

If you select links on the Tracfone site relating to LNP/porting/"transferring your number from another carrier" you find this language: "In order to transfer or port in your phone number to TracFone Wireless, Inc. you must have a TracFone wireless phone."

That makes no sense in the context of BYOP LTE CDMA smartphones. It suggests that they would only allow BYOP LTE CDMA smartphones as new activations, not ports.

Have folks successfully ported their numbers into Tracfone under the BYOP LTE Smartphone capability? Is the above language just an old relic, prior to introduction of the BYOP capability?

With GSM it's the SIM that gets activated not the phone. TracFone doesn't even ask for your phone's IMEI if you call them and use the automated activation option. Once it's activated you can put the SIM in any compatible phone.

There's no probably BIS so classic BlackBerrys will only work for talk and text, no BBM BlackBerry Email or FaceBook Messenger etc. BB10 devices should be fully functional.

  36. Hi Dennis, I just bought an unlocked Moto G (3rd generation) which is the global GSM unlocked listen on amazon. Will it work on Tracfone? I have no idea how this works!

    1. It will work. You just need a TracFone GSM SIM and an airtime card from tracfonewireless.com/byop/ or Walmart.

    2. Thank you so much for answering! Just to be clear so I don't mess this up-- I shouldn't run into that problem where you need to have a Verizon phone for at least 6 months before if this is a brand new phone. And triple minutes should work, correct/ I should be able to transfer my number?

      Delete
    3. The 6 month aging requirement only applies to 3G Verizon Prrepaid phones. You said you have an unlocked GSM phone so it doesn't apply to you. You will get triple minutes and you should be able to port your number.

For number ports, using the Chat option on TracFone's FaceBook Help Page is the safest and most reliable way.

See Porting Your Number? How to Find Your Account Number and Password for more about porting.

    1. As long as the LG G2 is not currently active and hasn't been reported lost ot stolen it should be fine. Verify that your phone is OK for activation at Swappa | ESN / IMEI / MEID Check (Free)

If the phone is OK follow this guide See TF LTE BYOP - canonical thread.

    2. Thanks Dennis, I checked, it's says my phone is clear and ready to be activated, but when I was chatting with TF, they said my phone was active, my phone # says Unknown in the status area

    3. Turn the phone off and on every few hours, it should eventually activate. If it doesn't try chat again.

      Delete
    4. Also try making a phone call, Verizon phones require a successful outgoing call before they are fully activated.

      Delete
    5. Dennis, It seems as though my phone has been activated before and still is according to TF after my 2nd chat with them (even though Swappa says it's ready), so now I will have to mess with the place I bought the phone from to see if I can get that cleared up. Thanks again for your replies.

    1. No, TracFone doesn't offer Sprint BYOP.

    2. Is there any prognosis on when sprint phones will be accepted by tracfone byop?

      Delete
    3. I haven't heard anything. TracFone seems to be de-emphasizing Sprint. There haven't been any new Sprint based Straight Talk or NET10 based phones in over a year.

I suspect there's also an engineering cost to getting TracFone PayGo buckets working on a new operator and TracFone doesn't think it's worthwhile to add support for Sprint.

  45. I bought a galaxy s5 and had my tracfone number, minutes and all ported over with no problem. But the Verizon hotspot loaded on the phone is not recognizing the mobile number and I can't get a hotspot to work. Anything I can do to fix that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The hotspot app on most Verizon phones only works on Verizon itself not on Verizon MVNOs like TracFone.

If you experiment with third party hotspot apps you can probably find one that works. PdaNet+ is the most popular and seems to work with the most phones. There's a free trial version available.

  51. Anyone activate a Moto G (Verizon 3G prepaid) lately on Tracfone? I bought mine almost 6 months ago from best buy, activated it on Verizon (but bought no minutes), but tracfoen reports the MEID as being "not compatible". Hopefully it's because I need to wait longer - it hasn't been 6 months. Not sure if Tracfone's compatibility took is that smart - does it have a database indicating if every MEID is unlocked?

  52. I am trying to activate a Verizon galaxy s4 CDMA on tracfone but am not having any luck. Done the area code and imei and said it was compatible. Bought an activation kit with the Sim card. Tried to transfer my number and minutes, texts, and data from my previous lg tracfone. Tracfone support said I needed a Sim card from them and so they sent one. Tried to activate and transfer from old tracfone again and was told it couldn't be activated because there was no coverage in my area. We have good Verizon coverage. So I decided I would try to activate it with a new number and bought airtime. They proceeded to activate but was told there was an error and provided me with a ticket no and was told to call back in 24 to 48 hours so they could fix the error. Called back in 48 hours and got the same error so they provided me with another reference ticket and am supposed to call again in 48 hours. Has anyone had this much trouble with tracfone support? Feel like I am getting a big runaround. All they have to do is fix the error but apparently there is no hurry to do this. Should I just keep trying or is it something I have to accept?

    1. Lots of people, myself included, have had trouble with TracFone screwing up activations, balance transfers and even simple refills. TracFone's systems seem really buggy, their support people poorly trained and unable to do anything but write tickets.

When TracFone told you to call back in 24 hours did they give you a special number to call and a PIN code? The people at that special number seen to TracFone's most capable support reps.

If you didn't get the number and PIN, use the Chat option on TracFone's FaceBook Support Page. It's a lot less frustrating than calling and in my experience if the Chat reps can't solve your problem they almost always give you the special number and PIN.

    1. TracFone doesn't currently offer T-Mobile BYOP SIMs. You could use a SIM from T-Mobile itself or a different T-Mobile MVNO in the second slot.

  59. I have had a Tracfone LG Ultimate 2 for over a year and just purchased a new LG G3 (Verizon version) which I should receive next week and hope to use it for Tracfone's BYOP program. Should this new G3 work well with the BYOP plan?
I would like to keep my current phone number and also keep my current buckets of mins texts and data and have them transfered to me new phone.
Can this be easily done on Tracphone's site once I receive my phone?
Are there specific steps I should take to make this happen smoothly?
I expect I will need a Sim from Tracphone. Should I get that from them or anywhere is OK?
Are there some settings I need to change on the G3 during activation?
    Any tips or suggestions?
    Thanks much,
    Phil

  60. Great website. I am retired and recently received a free iphone 4s from a friend (my first smart phone). It is registered to verizon 23.0 with a clean esn and unlocked. I checked tracfones current offers for smart phones (2/26/2016) and saw the new plans did not appear to offer 3X or the 1 year option. Rather than purchase the sim from tracfone and have it shipped, I picked up one at Target, This sim shows 3X with different plans. The $19.99 program with 3x seems like a great 90 day plans, if it is still possible to get. Here are my questions (please feel free to offer any additional advise):
    1) If the 3x offer is still valid, how can I select this on TF's website?
    2) Can I select a 1 year program and how can I select on TP website?
    3) The iphone 4s handles either GSA or CDMA. Which is best for call and which best for data in Tucson AZ?
I would appreciate any knowledgeable guidance, I can get.
Thanks in advance for your input,
    Jim

  61. What are the steps to activate a used iPhone 5c previously used on a Sprint prepaid network?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1. Get the phone unlocked by Sprint or a third party.
      2. Buy a TracFone SIM activation kit and a TracFone airtime card
      3. If you want to use the phone on the AT&T network, activate the TracFone GSM SIM following the instructions in the kit .
If you want to use the phone on the Verizon network, activate the TracFone CDMA SIM in a Verizon LTE phone and then move the SIM to the Sprint iPhone afer activation.

  62. If I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 and I use it on the TracFone network will it support Samsung pay or Android Pay? I've been with Tracfone for years and I'm trying to get up-to-date as far as using one of the credit pay methods.

  63. Can one buy a CDMA LTE Tracfone with minutes included (only low end phones available) and then switch the SIM Card to a good unlocked Verizon phone without dealing with Tracfone's horrendous service reps? Or is the original LTE SIM card "married" to the first Tracfone phone? If you start with a Verizon unlocked phone and the TF CDMA Sim card kit, can the CDMA Sim Card be moved from phone to phone without calling the TF service reps?

  65. Gah! I am on hour 2 with tracfone support trying to get the unlocked Verizon iPhone to work. It can make and receive calls but not use the data. Can only access Internet via wifi.

Techs keep checking our coverage (good) and that cellular data is turned on (yes). They have programmed a couple updates but so far I am mostly on hold while they check for information.

Help! This is not looking optimistic.
