  1. Finally this is up! I have been looking forward to it all day and refreshing every so often.

Dennis, an error at the top regarding the LG G2 D800: 32GB and not "32 MB of internal memory".

    ReplyDelete
  2. So, here I am again. I'm the one with the LG Motion on CDMA that's on MetroPCs, who is forcing me to change the phone to work on their new network.

I have decided to switch from MetroPCs to Cricket Wireless because 1) I will be getting more data and at a cheaper price, 2) and for less money, 3) without spending extra, calling to and from US territories is possible, and 4) they have the music service Deezer for only $6. I have been interested lately in subscribing to a music service, but never liked paying $10 bucks a month for it. So, for $1 more ($41 ($35+6) versus $40), I get 500 MB more of data, on demand music streaming service, and more places to call.

Now, I still need help in figuring out which is the best phone to get. These are my minimum requirements for a phone:

    1. New
    2. Any version of Android other than 4.4 / Kit Kat, preferably 5.0 / Lollipop.
    3. At least 1 GB of RAM
    4. At least 8 GB of internal memory.
    5. Has a micro-sd card slot
    6. LED Flash (I can't believe some phones, i.e. Moto E., don't have flash)
    7. FM radio
    8. Preferably a removable battery. If not, .... oh well.

Pricing: Well, $0 is great, $50 is also great, $100 o.k., $150 I suppose, $200 ish kinda o.k., but whatever features are included should be worth far more and I should feel like I am buying a $300 or $400 phone. Once the prices start going towards $200, I feel like I could be buying myself a laptop (low end, a chrome maybe) at that price.

Now, the ZTE Overture 2 that was just announced seems to meet my needs perfectly. But I am always left wondering if there isn't something better out there within my budget, and something that will last a long time. I don't like switching phones often. I want to buy something now and use it for maybe 3, 4, or 5 years.

So, is there something exceptionally better than the ZTE Overture 2, that maybe for the same price or $50 more or $100 more that works with Cricket Wireless? It can be only for Cricket or an unlocked phone.

Oh, final question: If I cancel my MetroPCs service before time for renewal, do I get a partial refund?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    1. @Rob...Just an fyi, the deezer music service offered by cricket is crap!!! (see App store reviews). I have cricket (for now) but willing to pay for Spotify. Check with cricket to see what kind of a credit they will give you to switch? Also Walmart sells an LG Escape 2 for $129 that covers all of your specs (I believe?) Other option would be an UNLOCKED GSM phone that you find on ebay/cl, etc. Also re: cxcling your current service, you will want to have # "ported" over to cricket 1st.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the mention of the LG Escape 2. I had seen already that someone recently mentioned it in the list of sales post for last week. I will need to decide if it's worth it to spend $130 vs. $50 to get that phone. Thoughts are of course welcomed.

Now, the thing when looking for phones is that I have my mind made up on specs, and then I read comments like the one here: http://www.androidcentral.com/att-quietly-begins-selling-lg-escape2-and-its-curved-display-17999 and here: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Unannounced-LG-Escape-2-found-on-AT-Ts-website_id69358 on the LG Escape 2, and I begin to feel like I need to be looking for $200 plus dollar phones with 2 GB of RAM and more than 8 GB of internal storage. How valid are the claims that people are making over there with regards to phones having less than 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage? I remember it was the same thing with the Moto G. I had my mind made up that I will save up to purchase that $180 phone, and then I read somewhere someone saying that the specs are basic / low end.

    3. The Escape 2 looks promising. LG seems to good job with their low and phones with the best CPUs at evey pricepoint and a UI skin that doesn't sap a lot of resources. I like that the Escape 2 has a HD 720 x 1280 px screen compared with the 480 x 800 or 540 x 854 that are the rule at the sub $150 price point.

    4. "7. FM radio"

A phone with just an FM radio in it instead of AM/FM is a phone with only half a radio. Anyway, consider using your generous Cricket data plan with Tunein Radio to get your radio, instead of a built-in FM radio chip. Which seems rare, anyway: I've owned several smart phones, and not one has had this FM radio chip in it.

I even use my LTE (or wifi) to listen to so-called local radio stations: I get a better, more clear signal than I do "off air". The only time I don't is if there is some sort of radio prize call-in thing, and I don't want to experience a delay.

  3. For 3 weeks in a row, the Cricket iPhone 5C, 32 GB for $299 has been passed over for the "Other especially good deals" award, which was given to the ST iPhone 5C, 8 GB at the same price! This week the Cricket iPhone 5C link is broken. Here is the correct link: https://www.cricketwireless.com/shop/smartphones/apple-iphone5c-32gb-yellow.html All colors are available, and activation is required to get this price.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've corrected the link, thanks for letting me know. I don't it's a particularly good deal because:
      1. It's locked to Cricket and requires 6 months service to get unlocked
      2. New activation and an airtime purchase is required to get the $299 price. It doesn't appear possible to buy the phone online without activation at any price.

      Delete
    2. Thanks. Isn't the ST iPhone 5C locked to Straight Talk? Don't they have a minimum service period to unlock the phone?

      Delete
    3. dennis: the crickets will tell you that the cricket iphone is better than ST iphone because you'll never want to leave cricket and so locked is a-okay.

      Delete
    4. I won't use Cricket or Straight Talk, but if I had to be locked to one of them, I would go Cricket.
It's the lesser of two weevils.

    5. "dennis: the crickets will tell you that the cricket iphone is better than ST iphone because you'll never want to leave cricket and so locked is a-okay."

My guess is that the poster thought the ST phone was locked as well. However, the ST phone could be a verizon version, which would make the sim slot unlocked.

      Delete
    6. AFAIK all Straight Talk iPhone 5c's are on AT&T. Straight Talk AT&T phones are locked, Straight Talk will unlock them after 12 months of service.

      Delete
    7. If I had to chose, I would rather have an iPhone 5C with 32 GB and be locked to Cricket for 6 months than have only 8 GB and be locked to Straight Talk for a year. The price is the same, ST charges more for their minimum plan and I would rather deal with Cricket CS for 6 months than ST's for 12.

      Delete
    8. If we're talkin' iPhones, let's not forget that the Verizon versions are already unlocked to work on AT&T and T-Mobile networks, as well.

  4. Denis, where did you get the Brightspot Nokia 521 for $14.99 price, and 635 for $49.99?? I checked 5 Target store in the OC, and LA area and they never heard of it, the prices are $79.99. and $109.99 respectively.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I get the prices by visiting my local SF Bay Area Target every Monday and checking the shelf tags or using the Brickseek Target Inventory Checker If you want to check yourself the DCPI code for the Brightspot Lumia 521 is 080-15-0005 and 080-15-0020 for the 635. It looks like the 521 is sold out in your area but the Mission Viejo Target has 1 635 in stock for $38.98.

  7. Based on the specs Compare Phones (Phone Scoop) the Overture looks better. It has more memory, a faster processor and LTE vs HSPA+.

The WM page says that it has LTE.

    2. Probably an error. The ZTE USA site says mo LTE.

  8. Thanks Dennis! I completely missed the HSPA+ only on the Fanfare.

  9. the cricket iphone sounds like a great deal. I got myself a 4s from vz and could not be happier. After the month with vz expires I will move to ptel

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Don't forget that your Verizon 4S is already unlocked so you can still use it on PTel and take your time finding an upgraded iPhone. Stick with the Verizon version and you'll be able to change carrier's whenever you wish!

      Delete
    2. I'm guessing that moving the (unlocked) 4s to PTel was REMUSRM's plan all along. This is what I plan to do (if Verizon is still offering the deal) after my free credits at Cricket run out in two months.

  10. By the good deals you have 2 separate galaxy s4. One from tmobile for 299 and one unlocked on eBay for 234... Why not get rid of tmobile one?

    2. Yes both of those, also some people don't trust eBay.

The "deal of the week" and the "especially good deals" list are my subjective choices based on what appealed to me as I scanned the full list of phones on sale this week. There's no objective way to determine the best deals for everyone. Everyone is free to make up their own lists based on their own biases and preferences.

  11. I've had good luck with phones on eBay. Advice? Avoid those with feedback in the tens of thousands. They don't care if they sent out some bad phones some of the time or treat some customers rotten, as long as there are enough good transactions to make up for it and give them a 99% + feedback rating. Do you want to take the risk of being one of their "acceptable losses"?

Look for someone with feedback in the low thousands. Who is only selling one or two phones, and has hardly sold any phones..... you are looking for an eBay seller who is selling their personal phone. The low feedback volume will mean a very good chance of personal attention from them. and if they are a consumer like you instead of a phone broker, they will know a lot about the one particular phone they are selling.

    1. I don't know how to do this, as I never subscribe to web pages and don't know a thing about it (I just visit pages when I want). However, this might be a little helpful:

      http://www.prepaidphonenews.com/search/label/Cricket

This will zero in on just the Cricket stuff. Not as good as a subscription delivered to you but maybe worth bookmarking.

  18. OnePlus is offering the 16GB OnePlus One for $250 and the 64GB model for $300. I know it specs well but I am concerned about warranty support and not sure how many US GSM / LTE bands it actually supports.

Would I be better off with it or buying a LG G2? Thank you

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can compare the specs of the two here: OnePlus One vs LG G2 - Phone specs comparison. Overall they are pretty similar but the OPO has a slightly faster CPU and 50% more RAM so it should perform better. However, I have a G2 and the user interface is very fast and responsive, better than my Note 4 even.

There seems to be more 3rd party ROM development for the OPO. G2 stock ROMs are rock solid, some of OPO's releases have been reported to be a bit buggy although the current one is supposed to be good. I have no idea how OPO support is but if you buy the phone through OPO you should at least have a warranty. LG seems to provide decent support at least for phones purchased through carrier channels. I don't know what the warranty situation is with the eBay G2s

The OPO is a bit lacking in US band support. It has LTE bands 17 and 4 which are AT&T and T-Mobile's main LTE bands but lacks support for AT&T's secondary bands 2, 5 and T-Mobile's 2 and 17. It also doesn't support T-Mobiles main 1700 3G band The AT&T G2 supports all of AT&T's bands. The T-Mobile G2 supports all of T-Mobile's except band 17 which is new.

Most OPO usuers seem satisfied with the phone's performance on US networks but a carrier specific G2 will get LTE (and 3G onT-Mobile) in more places.

      Delete
    2. Update, it's T-Mobile's LTE band 12 (not 17) which the G2 doesn't support. Few phones do currently.

      Delete
  19. Sorry I forgot to post the OnePlus One's bands copied from their website:

    GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz
    WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/8
    LTE: Bands: 1/3/4/7/17/38/40

I notice no LTE band 5 or 12 but don't know how big a deal that is. It would be nice to have have all T-mobile and ATT bands for future flexibility but neither the 800 and 801 G2 models support all bands either.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Thank you Dennis for the through run down on the Oppo One Plus and LG G2. Coverage is so important, I'm surprised more manufacturers don't include support for all bands in the target market.
