TracFone Text Card Sales Suspended

Remember those text only airtime refills that Tracfone launched on their website three weeks ago? Well they are gone, pulled from the TracFone site last week.

The text cards worked with TracFone Android and BYOP phones which use the "triple-triple" billing system. Triple-triple has separate buckets for minutes, texts and data. For every minute of airtime you buy, you get 3 minutes, 3 texts and 3 MBs of data. Triple-triple is a good deal except that it's all too easy to end up with lots of minutes but no texts or data left. While data top up cards have been available since the beginning of triple-triple, the only way to add texts was by buying a minutes card whether you needed more minutes or not. For anyone who uses a fair number of texts, the text cards were a welcome addition.

Like the data cards, the text cards did not add days of service. Users still need to add one of the regular airtime cards every 30, 90 or 365 days, depending on denomination, to keep their TracFone account active. Like MBs added with the data cards, texts added with the text cards rollover and never expire as long as the user keeps their service active.

It's not clear why the text cards disappeared. A HowardForums user was told by a TracFone customer service representative that the disappearance was temporary and was due to some "glitches". If you desperately need texts, another customer using the chat option on TracFone's Facebook support page was told by a TracFone rep that the rep could manually add texts to the user's phone. I've contacted TracFone's media relations person to see if I can get more information and will update this post if I do.

  1. the tracfone triple buckets refill system is a disaster. you could lose all of your voice minutes or your texts or your data without having used much of them. this has been the situation for me very often. disaster.

    1. You can also get the PagePlus standard plan, or the Selectel annual plan to get PayGo on Verizon. No 4G phones, except for the Straight Talk iPhone 5 (and that will not get 4G on paygo plans).

    2. was trying to transfer my tracfone account from an iphone 4 to an iphone 4s -- the tracfone page wouldn't allow it. then surprisingly found pageplus would take it and was cheaper. so will end up putting both iphones on pageplus. so, screw tracfone with its incompetent triple buckets that they can empty at anytime when you didn't make any calls, texts, or did not use use much data.

    3. If you do not use the phone for xx days, Tracfone empties your account? Is that part of the triple-triple system?

    4. Not as far as I know.. But if you don't use the phone for one year (six months for triple-triple phones) TracFone will suspend your service. Provided you have added money every 90 days as required they will restore your service including your unused airtime if you call them.

  4. BYO plans are a good option for many PayGo users but they don't have LTE on Verizon either.

  5. Dennis -- Is TracFone in the process of setting up a 4G LTE GSM BYOP plan? Some of us have just noticed that the AT&T link appears to be live on the TracFone BYOP webpage:

    1. I saw that on HoFo too. It doesn't seem to be possible to but a TracFone AT&T SIM yet.
