List of Sprint Phones Allowed on Boost Mobile Changed - iPhone 5c In, Galaxy S3 Out

Boost Mobile has once again changed the list of Sprint phones that can be activated on Boost.

The good news is that the iPhone 5c and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 are now allowed. The list of newly allowed phones also includes a mysterious device called the "LG G". I suspect Boost means the LG Optimus G. On the other hand the ambiguously incomplete name could also refer to the LG G Flex, G3 or even the G4 or G Flex 2.

The bad news is that the following phones are no longer allowed on Boost: HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO 4G, HTC EVO Shift 4G, Samsung Epic 4G, Samsung Epic 4G Touch, and the Samsung Galaxy S III. Except for the  S III, these are all WiMAX capable phones. Sprint is shutting the WiMAX network down on November 6, 2015 but WiMAX phones will still work for voice, text and 3G data after the shutdown so I can't see any reason to not allow them.

Here's the new list of Sprint phones allowed on Boost:
  • Apple iPhone 5c
  • Apple iPhone 5s
  • Apple iPhone 6
  • Apple iPhone 6 Plus
  • HTC Hero
  • L260
  • LG G
  • LG G2
  • LG Lotus
  • LG Lotus Elite
  • LG LX370
  • LG Optimus S
  • LG Remarq
  • LG Rumor 2
  • LG Rumor Touch
  • Samsung Instinct
  • Samsung Instinct s30
  • Samsung Intercept
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 2
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Samsung Galaxy S4T
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Samsung Moment
  • Samsung Rant
  • Samsung Reclaim
  • Samsung Restore
  • Samsung Seek
  • Samsung SPH-M220
  • Samsung SPH-M240
  • Samsung SPH-M320
  • Samsung SPH-M330
  • Samsung SPH-M360
  • Samsung SPH-M520
  • Sanyo Incognito
  • Sanyo Innuendo
  • Sanyo SCP-2700
  • Sanyo SCP-3200
  • Sanyo SCP-3800
  • Sanyo SCP-3810
  • Sanyo Taho
  • Sanyo Vero
To successfully activate on Boost a Sprint phone must be on the above list, fully paid for and not currently active on Sprint or a Sprint MVNO.

According to Boost, Sprint phones can only be activated by Boost dealers. However several Prepaid Phone News readers have reported being able to activate Sprint phones by calling Boost customer service.  If you get turned down try asking the support rep to "re SKU"the phone to Sprint.

  1. Sprint is so weird. Why in God's name would they ban the old s3?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because they are shutting down WiMAX. And the last thing they want is allowing someone to activated a WiMAX device and few months later the customer call in complaining their data a slower. if you have old s3 , go to freedompop i think they still allow you to activated WiMAX. just dont used that phone as a primary phone.

    2. The Galaxy S3 was not a WiMAX phone. If you go back to the beginning and read what Dennis said.

Except for the Galaxy S3. All the other phones excluded are WiMAX phones.

I had the Boost S3 and it never had WiMAX.

    3. s3 is NOT WIMAX, it is 4G LTE. s2 is WIMAX.

    4. I am just trying to get this straight…
If I purchase a new/used Sprint (postpaid) phone, can I immediately activate that with Boost.

OR, do I need to have that Sprint phone active for a year with sprint before it is able to be unlocked? Because I thought the unlock policy was after 12 months and everything paid off/good standing?

    5. In theory, if you have a fully paid for (no outsatnding ETF or EIP no money owed to Sprint by the previous owner) Sprint postpaid phone that's on this list Boost can activate it.

You have call Boost or go through a dealer to activate, you can't do it on line.

Many people have had trouble with Boost reps who can't or won't activate Sprint phones so expect problems.

  4. Best Buy appears to have the LG G2 in stock for Sprint. I wonder if a never activated Sprint G2 would work on Boost or is Byod only for used devices?

It looks like two companies are selling the LG G Flex @ $199on the PPN weekly deals list. One is prepaid the other postpaid. I hope the G Flex will be allowed. They need an ESN checker.

    1. The G Flex that HSN and ShopCellDeals are selling is for Sprint Prepaid so it's unlikely to work on Boost even if postpaid G Flex's are allowed.

  5. It's all so convoluted. Why not just allow any unlocked GSM device?

This puts Boost at (yet another) disadvantage compared to many of its competitors.

  6. Oops. The above should have said CDMA device!!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. CDMA in America will always have less byod then Gsm does. That's the nature of the beast in this country. In gsm strong countries like India and China, even cdma handsets have had sim like ruim cards for years because if they didn't, NOBODY would buy them. In those countries the cdma handsets can often take gsm sims TOO actually making their cdma handsets MORE compatible with MORE sims and handsets and technologies then over here. In the end, it ends up being a IMPLEMENTATION of technology as much as the inherent openness or not of it. In America, Cdma is synonymous with closed however even Sprint's byosd is tons better then three or four years ago when they had ZERO byod. Really literally zero. You had to buy a mvno handset for that mvno and that's all it worked on unless you were willing to go through a Byzantine process involving spcs and such to get it to work even on another Sprint mvno. It's gotten a lot better but there's been a lot of hurdles in the way (like Sprint's new FEC policy on blacklisting unpaid for account phones along with stolen/lost ones). Sprint byosd is like a pendulum, sometimes it swings good and sometimes it swings bad. But at least it even exists.

  8. Beware Galaxy note 3 are not being succesfully activated on Boost, the phone either fails activation or receives no data. I The best excuses I got from Boost was that about half of them activate the other dont, WTF? Phone had a clean ESN, and was successfully reSKU to boost it just would work after activation. I worked at a dealer store, we tried 2, failed both times!

    1. i almost bought the note 3 because of the list above but i decided to call a dealer first to see if he would activate it, but he said they are not being successful right now. so i just got an s5 that was already on boost mobile

  9. Correct above, even if you get a uicc from Boost it still doesn't work. They first said towers in my area were being upgraded. It has been nearly a month to no avail. In the end, Boost said they would have to get with their engineers to see why it will not work.

    1. That sounds like Sprint's typical ineptitude around Boost BYOP. There's no technical reason why one memory configuration would be allowed and the other not.

Don't waste your time with Boost, any Sprint MVNO should be able activate a clean MEID Sprint 32GB iPhone 5c.

    ReplyDelete
  20. There are several ways:
    1. Enter the phone's IMEI on imeidata.net/iphone/unlock-check
    2. Insert a SIM from a different operator and restart the iPhone. If you get a message that the SIM is not supported, the phone is locked.
    3. Use iTunes to backup the phone, erase the phone and restore the phone from the backup. If you phone is unlocked iTunes will dispay "Congratulations, your iPhone is now unlocked" while restoring the backup.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It should be possible as the Note 2 is on Boost's list of allowed phones. You're supposed to go to a dealer to re-SKU phones so end user support probably hasn't been trained in the process. Keep calling and if you get turned down ask for a supervisor.

      Delete
    5. So if a buy a sim card from ting compatible with the note 4 will I be able to still activate it on boost

      Delete
    6. In theory that should work, But it's safest to wait and let Boost send you a new SIM if they determine one is needed. Boost is very weird about SIMs, they will often insist on replacing perfectly good SIMS. You have to play by their rules if you want to get the phone activated by them.
