  1. Galaxy A3 and A5 available for 220-280 in Amazon. Are they not good deals?.. I really like 4.5-5" metal body phones.

    1. The A3 has a low res qHD screen and the camera doesn't get very good reviews. The A5 is better in both respects but seems expensive for a phone with a Snapdragon 410.

The biggest problem with both phones is that they aren't US models, so they lack all US LTE bands except b5, which is only used in some markets by AT&T and not at all by T-Mobile. Samsung USA won't honor the warranty on non-US phones either.

    2. Yes. the A3 and A5 are midline phones. The midline sector is very crowded, a lot more so than flagships.

  2. Sprint LG G2 (Black/White) is $150 at Best Buy.
I was finally able to activate mine that I bought for $200 at Best Buy while back. I think what happens is that Best Buy takes it's sweet old time in notifying Sprint that the device has been paid in full and sold off contract.

I had a similar problem with a Republic Wireless Moto X I bought from Motorola. Motorola had not yet notified Republic that the device was sold so I couldn't activate it until it did.

  3. Under Family Dollar & Straight Talk, you list the ZTE Valet as AT&T. I’m pretty sure it is Verizon.

Also, Best Buy is offering a one month free Boost Mobile service promo.

Thanks for all the dcpi info for Target!

  4. My unlocked AT&T branded LG G2 still does not have Lollipop any ETA on when it might get it?
On the other hand my Sprint LG G2 has had Lollipop for quite awhile now.

    1. Lollipop for the AT&T LG G2 D800 was released April 15, 2015. Official installation instructions from AT&T: Update the LG G2 (D800) to Android 5.0 (Lollipop)- AT&T Wireless Support

You need to have an AT&T SIM installed to get the OTA update.

If you are familiar with rooting and installing ROMs there's an unofficial manual process as well [dlpkgfile] LG G2 D800 AT&T lollipop update file - xda-developers. This process will likely void your warranty and can brick the phone if you make a mistake or something goes wrong so I recommend buying or borrowng an AT&T SIM and doing it the official way.

    2. Will an AT&T MVNO sim card work?
If it doesn't, does the AT&T sim card have to have service?

      Delete
    3. An AT&T MVNO SIM would probably work. I don't know if it would need to be an active SIM or not.

I had an AT&T Samsung Note 4 that wouldn't get updates with a PTel or T-Mobile SIM. I inserted an Airvoice $10/month PayGo SIM where the balance had expired because it hadn't been topped up after 30 days and immediately got the update over WiFi. The Airvoice SIM's account hadn't been canceled, it still had a phone number and I could have added money to it if I wanted to use it. I don't know if a never activated SIM or a canceled SIM would work or not.

  5. FRYs has got Galaxy S5 mini for $249 (with their promo code). Spec wise seems to be decent price?! (except stuck to Kitkat4.4 for ever!?)..

  6. The ZTE Overture 2 sucks or at least my device is defective, and Cricket Wireless is being an idiot about the whole thing, which has me very furious.

There are multiple problems with my phone:

Icons freeze when I try to place them on a home screen:

Here is Proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22X1nMu0A88 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGfLNU8Mwxg

Folders don't close properly and apps can't be selected from them properly

Here is Proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksSKADo28JQ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1ACCuMSiJ0

Shortcuts disappear when the phone is restarted

    Here is Proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOUcv7Q_S78

The default home screen setting is not saved when the phone is restarted.

    Here is proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6zudSKSMLY

And you see, when I call Cricket Wireless yesterday (7/4/15), they have the audacity to tell me that I need to send my phone in, be without a phone for a few days and when they receive it and inspect it, that I will then be mailed a phone, meaning that I will be without a phone for anywhere between 7 to 14 days. The other option is that I can put down a deposit to get a phone right away, but that I must also pay for shipping, and that the deposit is refundable but NOT the shipping.

I purchased this phone on June 20th and returned to the exact same store on June 27th, only to be told that I must go through Corporate office and not the store, despite this being the information that's published online. One rep by phone told me that the 27th is actually the 8th day and that the 26 was the 7th day, because he is counting the 20th.

I have asked about 6 times to speak with a supervisor by telephone and I was given the run around or transferred to calls that tell me there is no one available to answer and then I am disconnected. When I was finally connected with a supervisor, she tells me that only the warranty department can do anything about this situation, to which I was already connected to several times and they said nothing differently can be done.

One person by chat online told me that a third option can be that I can purchase another phone from the store, have Corporate send me a label for my damaged phone, and that when they receive it and inspect it, that I will then be given a refund and this way I don't pay shipping. However, when I called back the Warranty Department, no one knows of this option and says that option is incorrect and doesn't exist. The store where I purchased the phone from today seems to be closed because no one picks up. I don't know what I am going to do.

I emailed ZTE as well to see if maybe they can do something.

If anyone here has any advice or knows of a particular number I can call that would result in this being solved FAIRLY, please do let me know as I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

    1. Check the written return policy of the store and hold them to it.

Unless it says on your bill of sale that you have to return it by mail, insist they take it back.

    2. ALWAYS have an older backup phone you can use for a few days while trying to resolve a situation. This is the case with any provider. You also have to expect more problems out-of-the-box with cheap phones as opposed to top-of-the-line models.

    3. I'm a Cricket customer who defends their value because nothing comes close. But I only recommend BYOD. Carrier-locked devices are always the worst choice, and on top of that they ALWAYS seem to bring out the worst in Cricket customer service.

  7. Dennis, there is a rumor that the GoPhone throttle speed will soon officially change and has already unofficially changed. Is there any truth to this rumor?

    http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1866168-GoPhone-throttling-changed?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I don't have any insider information but some HoFo users are seeing either 512 Kbps throttled speeds or no throttle at all. The 512 Kbps could be a fluke or a policy change, For some users the higher speeds only happen after midnight when the network is likely to be lightly loaded

  11. The Amazon Fire Phone is $140 new on EBay http://m.ebay.com/itm/171849652666?_mwBanner=1
Or $160 from Amazon with 1 year of free Prime included
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OC0USA6
I like the multi band support, processor, free Prime and Amazon warranty coverage is great but the OS is questionable, no Google Play and the screen is only 4.7".
I had planned to buy the awesome LG G2 until I found the Fire on sale. I wish the G2 fully supported ATT and T-Mobile. Would I be better off buying the Fire Phone or the LG G2? Thanks

  12. T-Mobile says that it added 2.1 million customers in the 2nd Q 2015, a 41 percent year-over-year increase and the ninth straight quarter with more than 1 M customer adds. That includes more than 1 M postpaid adds as well as 178,000 branded prepaid adds.
In total, T-Mo says that it’s now got 58.9 million customers.

  13. T-Mobile today introduced Mobile Without Borders, an expansion of Simple Choice that lets you use your phone in Canada and Mexico just like you would in the US. That means that calling and texting to, from, and between the US, Canada and Mexico won’t cost you extra, regardless of whether a mobile or landline phone is involved. And when you’re in Canada or Mexico, you can use your 4G LTE data plan just like you would in the US.

Mobile Without Borders also includes Music Freedom and Wi-Fi Calling, allowing you to use those features in Canada and Mexico just like in the US. T-Mo says that customers will also be able to tap into their Data Stash in Canada and Mexico, though that feature won’t be added until later this year.
