Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week July 19 - July 25

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring the best current US prepaid phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Motorola Moto E (2nd gen) LTE Android phone for Verizon which is on sale for $39.99 at Frys stores or $44.99 online at Walmart. The regular price is $69.99.

The 2nd gen Moto E LTE is probably the best entry level Android phone currently available. It runs Android Lollipop and has a 1.2 Mhz quad-core Snapdragon 410 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal storage and memory card slot. There's a 4.5" 540x960px screen, 5 MP main camera and a VGA front facing camera.

In addition to Verizon this version of the Moto E has been reported to work on Verizon MVNOs that support LTE phones like PagePlus, Selectel and TracFone.

If you are up to a bit of hacking, XDA-Developers.com has instructions on how to enable the Moto E's unlocked but hidden GSM support. With the GSM hack, the Moto E supports all of AT&T and T-Mobile's 2G and 3G bands. LTE support is a bit limited on every carrier except Verizon. LTE bands 2, 4, 5 and 13 are supported. For  T-Mobile that's pretty good as Band 4 is T-Mobile primary LTE band and T-Mobile also uses band 2 LTE in some markets. In fact, the only missing T-Mobile LTE band is 12 which is new to T-Mobile. AT&T LTE support is poor, the Moto E lacks AT&T's primary LTE band b17, although it does support bands 2 and 5 which AT&T uses in some markets.

  1. Dennis, what exactly does the word "phablet" mean as it used on your weekly "Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week" list? I know what the word "phablet" generally means. But exactly how big does a screen have to be for you to use the word "phablet" on the PPOSTW list?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I consider any phone with a screen size of 5.7 inches or greater a phablet. I doubt that I'm 100% consistent with that however. Phablet is pretty meaningless anyway.

Where are the 4.7" phones?. Why such phones are not getting released in 2015?. Is the demand gone for 4.7" form factor?

  5. Freedompop is offering a B-Stock quad-core "Kyocera Hydro Icon" Spark-LTE phone, along with a free 1GB of data and and a month of unlimited talk/text (possibly with premium voice), for $49.99.

Purchasing it through Ebates nets an additional $10 cash back.

New members who sign up for Ebates using the following link and make a purchase of at least $25 also get to choose between an additional $10 gift card for a variety of merchants or a straight $5 cash back bonus:

    http://www.ebates.com/rf.do?referrerid=j2p7PYgWQLr%2B%2BxFw8PrZCQ%3D%3D&eeid=26471

After factoring in those credits the total net cost comes out to $29.99, which is the same price as the previously offered (and lower specced) Optimus F3.

As of now the phone also ships next-day, a noticeable improvement over previous shipping delays of up to one month.

Of course, it goes without saying that the Hydro Icon is eligible for Freedompop's free 500mb of LTE after downgrading the default promo plans online via the account dashboard.

The catch is that FP is infamous for its problematic or echo-ridden in-app VoIP calling, the app sometimes garbles SMS confirmation codes (i.e. for Hangouts) and they opportunistically offer premium voice at an added cost of $3.99/mo as a means of actually making their "free" minutes usable.

Using Hangouts (with Dialer) serves as a quick fix for some of these shortcomings at the expense of sacrificing the free minutes and messages, but $3.99/mo for 200 premium voice minutes, 100 global minutes (opt-in), 500 messages and 500mb of LTE is still pretty competitive.

Alternatively, users can downgrade only the $15/1GB data plan (which isn't worth it unless you use an average of at least 750mb every month) and still keep the unlimited talk/text promotion for $4.99/mo.

On the plus side, using both premium voice and the promo plan makes it possible to get unlimited talk/text with 500mb of LTE for only $8.98 (or $10.98 with Premium Plus, which includes voicemail, rollover and tethering). That's currently the cheapest unlimited talk/text plan available.

As with every network, YMMV depending on coverage area.

  8. It appears that of all of the LTE BANDS, BAND 4 is the most important... T-Mobile utilizes it; an AT&T ( exclusive) Branded phone like the LG OPTIMUS G PRO runs 4G LTE on T-Mobile ; and apparently Verizon utilizes Band 4 as well...

In that case, shouldn't your phone pick of the week pick up LTE band 4 effortlessly on AT&T? Or does the phone's CDMA functionality preclude this?

    Thanks Dennis...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. AT&T's primary LTE band is band 12 which the Moto E doesn't support. AT&T does use bands 2, 4 and 5, mostly for added capacity in densely populated urban areas, but it has far more LTE coverage on band 12. So a modified Verizon Moto E will get LTE on AT&T, but only in places where AT&T uses bands 4, 5 or 2.

In addition, the Verizon Moto E needs to be modified to enable the GSM and UMTS radios so that voice and messaging work on AT&T and T-Mobile and to unlock the APN settings so that the AT&T or T-Mobile APNs can be entered, which is necessary for data, including LTE data work on these networks.

      Delete
    2. AT&T's primary LTE BAND IS 17, not 12. They finally agreed to 700 MHz band compatibility and are upgrading their network in Sept 15 to support band 12, which T-Mobile is now using in 88 markets. Bands 12 and 17 use different frequency ranges in the 700 MHz band. Handsets need to be changed to use both 12 and 17.

  9. T-Mobile dealers on eBay are selling new SIMs activated with the $60/month Simple Choice plan and $15 international long distance option for $15-$18, first month included. No port-in, so you have to use Google Voice number or call forward from another phone.
You get 3GB plus 10GB data stash, which rolls over if you fund a second month.
$15 deal does not let you choose your area code; pay a $1 or two more if you need that.
This is a good deal if you want 13 GB of mobile data with tethering/hotspot for only $15-$18.

  12. Other than the camera, would the Freedom Pop or TextNow Nexus 5 be a better bet than the LG G2? I like the multi band support but am wary about the condition of a refurbished or CPO decide grin companies with less than stellar user reviews.

Will I be able to use the Nexus 5 from either company as is or must I get it unlocked?

    1. I can't tell you which is better but some things to consider:
The G2 has a better camera, bigger battery and larger screen than the Nexus 5.

The Nexus 5 supports more LTE bands than any of the four US versions of the G2 and is sold unlocked. Unlock codes for the the AT&T and T-Mobile G2 are about $5 on eBay

The Nexus 5 will likely get an official Android M update, the G2 probably not. There are many more 3rd party ROMs and hacks available for the Nexus 5 than the G2.

Both phones have non-removable batteries. The battery on a CPO phone may have lost a lot of capacity compared with a new phone.

hi everybody need your advice I currently am on contract w/ Att iPhone 6 model # MG4P2LL/A and will be moving to college soon in Angwin, CA. supposedly only Verizon has decent reception , what options are there to use my Att Iphone 6 on Verizon or any of it's mvno's ? I researched this and found a lot of conflicting info. supposedly Att Iphone 6 has the compatible hardware , appreciate any tips & advice you have for me thanks for your time everybody & appreciate this great site Dennis : )

    1. You have a GSM-only model. Verizon needs you to connect to their CDMA network to make calls. Your phone does not support CDMA at all.
If you inserted an activated Verizon/MVNO LTE SIM in your iPhone, you probably would get LTE data, because you phone supports the main Verizon band. But you could not dial a phone call using the phone dialer. iMessage might activate, but you would not be able to send regular SMS.

      Delete
    2. Just use your AT&T phone on your contract; Angwin has excellent coverage. Somebody is feeding you bad info about coverage there. Look for yourself on the coverage map.

  19. Hi Dennis, I'm certain this has already been answered, but I'm having trouble putting it all together at the moment: regarding this week's Deal of the Week is the Motorola Moto E (2nd gen) LTE Android: it seems like some people have had success activating it on Tracfon without first having it on version pp for 3 or 6 month period. true? would require a BYOP activation activation "kit" from Tracfon, right? And most importantly, will it actually USE the 4G LTE? I read your recent article which says users are reporting up to around 5Mbps on version based tracfon 4G LTE phones. And finally (also huge importance) will it include DATA ROAMING??

We have a 3G tracfon in the Denver area, and the data speeds are really pathetic. Even the PC Mag confirms this, showing average version 3G download speed in Denver at 0.7Mbps! http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2485852,00.asp
If I could improve that to around 5Mbps with a $40 moto, it would be worth it!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At the moment Verizon prepaid LTE phones like the Moto E are activating on TracFone without the 6 month waiting period. A Verizon Moto E on TracFone would get LTE throttled to 5 Mbps.

To activate a Verizon prepaid phone on TracFone you need a Verizon CDMA LTE activation kit.

Smartphones on TracFone Verizon CDMA do not have voice or 3G data roaming. There's speculation that they may LTE data roam in some areas like PagePlus does but this hasn't been confirmed.
