Switch to MetroPCS and Get a Free Phone and an Extra GB of High-Speed Data

T-Mobile's MetroPCS prepaid brand launched a new promotion today. With it customers who port a number to MetroPCS can get a free Samsung LG Leon, Galaxy Core Prime or Kyocera Wave LTE Android phone and an extra 1 GB per month of high speed data. As usual with promotions, there are a number of conditions you need to meet to take advantage of the offer:
  • It's available from July 20, 2015 to September 30, 2015 Jan. 4, 2016 at MetroPCS stores only, not online.
  • The customer must port a number from a non-T-Mobile network based operator.
  • The phone is free after an instant-rebate of $129, purchaser must pay sales tax if required by state and local laws.
  • Limit of 5 rebates per household.
  • Subject to phone availability, no rain checks.
  • Can't be combined with Add-A-Line instant rebate or any MetroPCS mail-in rebate.
  • Customer must activate on a $40 or higher plan to get the 1 GB of extra data which they can keep as long as they are an active MetroPCS customer on a non-promotional MetroPCS plan that includes data.
The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is a recently released entry level LTE Android phone with a 4.5 inch 480x800px screen, quad-core 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon 410 processor, 1 GB RAM and 8 GB of internal memory. It has a 5 MP main camera with flash and a 2 MP front-facing camera.

The promotion's added GB of high speed data gives MetroPCS' $40 plan 3 GB of high speed data and the $50 plan 5 GB.  Both plans also include unlimited talk and messaging and unlimited data throttled to 128 Kbps after the high speed data is used up. There's a $5/month multi-line discount on each line for accounts with two to five phones. Using the phone as a hotspot is permitted and there are no taxes on MetroPCS plans.

Update: The offer has been extended until 1/ 4/16 and the LG Leon and Kyocera Wave have been added to the list of eligible phones.

  1. If one were to take advantage of this could you make the first month payment and just use this phone with an actual tmobile sim card on an existing tmobile account and still have WiFi calling and hotspot?

    1. The phone needs to be unlocked before it will accept a T-Mobile SIM. I suspect that WiFi calling and hotspot would work on T-Mobile but the only way to know for sure is to try it.

  2. Hmm... I wonder why this is "in-store" only. Maybe they want to give their salespeople a chance to upsell, which they can't do as easily to online customers.

    1. MetroPCS is very dealer focused. They don't seem interested in online sales period. Almost every phone is out of stock online and has been for months.

    2. There is a lot of bait an switch going on at Metro's stores, much like car dealers. They will ALWAYS try to up sale you, and if all else fail, some stores will tell you to leave, they are not interested in you biz. I think dealing directly with T-Mobile, on line and in stores, will leave you much happier, and the plans price difference is minuscule, definitely NOT worth the hassle.

    3. Avoid "brick and mordor" at all costs. Actually, at all lower costs. You will save a lto of pain going online.

Besides, most "brick and mordor" dealers don't want your business, anyway. If they did, they would be open more like Walmart, instead of presenting a locked door to you most of the time.

There truly is a paradigm shift going on and mobile wireless companies that are content to run in place will not survive, much less prosper, IMHO. I'm sure the powerpoint presentation and debates are raging in the boardrooms right now... I'd sure love to be a fly on the wall!

  7. For $5 more a month plus taxes, Straight Talk would be a better option for a single line. Now they are advertising that all phones ST branded and the BYOD with the unlimited plan receive 5Gb of data. Then you don't have to worry about the bull sh%t of any up selling dealer.

    1. If 3GB will meet your needs, why pay the extra $5+ a month? Up selling is a one-time annoyance that's easily dealt with by saying "no thanks".

    1. The number you want to port has to be attached to an account. On Boost Mobile if your account has been suspended for 60 days the account is cancelled, your number will be lost and you won't definitely be able to port it.

You might be able to port from a suspended but not cancelled account but I'm not sure if Boost allows that or not (some carriers do and some don't). If you don't wan't to take chances, add $10 to the Boost account and switch to the $3/day play and immediately start the port process as $10 will only last 3 days.

So if I am on the unlimited plan and use up my 8gb data just with phone use, does that mean I won't have any high speed data left to run my laptop thru the hotspot? Or is 8gb high speed data reserved just for hotspot use? Trying to get rid of my home internet but definitely need to be able to work from home a few hours a week. I went the other day which was the last day b4 my boost phone would have been cut off, and drove 30mins to the closest metro pcs store thinking I was about to get the Samsung core prime, but no that didn't happen bc the woman told me that the only phone that could be used with the $30 plan was the LG Leon, and if I wanted the Samsung then I'd have to get either the$50or$60plan! Then had to pay$58 bc of fees. I was let down but nothing like I have been since getting home and realizing that I can't even dial out near my house bc there's no service! Also no matter where I've been while using it I can hardly make out what the person is saying bc the coverage is terrible! Who can I talk to first of all to get the freakn phone I wanted since the store I went to obv lied to me! I'm still going to have to change cell companies next month but the Samsung is worth more so I could prob sell it eventually, or maybe even find a way to use it with another service.

If he has to use a smartphone he probably will but would prefer not to. When we go to the Metro PCS store will he be able to get a flip phone? and Will our switching plan workout? also since it's only the two of us will that be considered a family plan and will we get a discount for that? 1. Two of your questions I'd like to know the answer to myself and I'd greatly appreciate it if you could report here tomorrow what happened after you go to the MetroPCS store. When I called my local dealer they said I had to activate on the $50 or $60 plan to get the rebate but that isn't a condition of the rebate terms so it might just be my dealer. I'm also curious if they'll give you the $5 per line family plan discount on your first payment in-store please let us all know. As for the flip phone, MetroPCS will give you $60 off the price of any phone when you port in your number in-store. You could try calling your local dealer ahead of time and ask them if they have any flip phones and how much they cost. If its $60 or less it will be free after the port in rebate in-store. Good luck.

  48. We went today. We didn't do it because the guy said my Grandpa couldnt get the free phone because we ended his AT&T plan before we went there, so they won't give him the free phone without it and he ABSOLUTELY has to keep his number and they wouldn't let him without the other service on the phone at the time to prove we are actually leaving another carrier for them. But yes you can get just talk and text on a flip phone for $25 depending if they have the phone in stock. Also yes autopay is available. But we just didn't do it. The guy also lied and said that my iPhone wasn't compatible because it was a CDMA iPhone which those don't work with metro pcs and I argued with him for a minute and told him its originally an AT&T phone but it's unlocked. but he's A LIAR cause we went to the AT&T store to reload our service and they were so nice unlike the rude a** liar at metro pcs, we told them what the metro guy said and so they checked my phone and they said he did lie and it is GSM phone. So I was right. We assumed he just wanted us to purchase a phone instead of letting me use my iPhone. Because I've used this iPhone on AT&T and straight ONLY so far. AND IF THAT GUY DIDNT LIE THEN USING THOSE CARRIERS WOULDNT BE POSSIBLE! It's funny how those are the ONLY carriers I used. So we both just got on the AT&T go phone plan. NEVER GO TO METRO PCS. THEY HAVE HORRIBLE SERVICE. THEY ARE SELFISH PIRATES.

SOME independent dealers are better than others. You don't denigrate GMC simply because of 1 sleazy dealership do you? No need to dump on Metro based on your 1 limited encounter.
