Updated: New RingPlus Promotion Today With More Data and a New Free Plan

Sprint MVNO RingPlus is running another promotion tomorrow, Thursday August 27, from 3 PM to 9 PM PDT. This promo was designed with the help of RingPlus customers who submitted suggestions on the operator's Discourse forum.

The latest promo is similar to the other ones RingPlus ran recently. It has two parts, one for new customers and another for current RingPlus users.

1. Customers who activate new lines get bonus data:
  • New subscribers to any Unlimited Talk and Text paid plan get an extra 1 GB every month
  • New subscribers any other paid plan get an additional 250 MB each month
  • New subscribers to the free Pepper plan get additional 250 MB added each month.
  • New subscribers to the Free plan get 100 MB added each month.
In addition, a new Diversity Free Plan will be available to new subscribers. It:
  • Requires a $5 minimum top up (like the Pepper plan). The $5 is not an activation fee or monthy charge, it goes into the user's account balance to be used or MMS, roaming or international calls.
  • Includes 300 Minutes, 500 Texts and 300 MB per month
Overages work differently on Diversity than they do on other RingPlus plans. Here's how Ring Plus describes it:

If you go over in minutes, data, or text, you are charged $4.99. Then you get a bonus package added in whichever category you went over in. These packages consist of 300 Min, 500 Texts, or 300MB and they are valid for two months. It’s a bit like rollover.

For example, if you go over your monthly base of 300 Min, you would be charged $4.99 and instantly receive a bonus of 300 Minutes which would not expire for 2 months. And of course the following month you’ll still receive your base allowance.

This means that their are no 2¢ overages with this plan. If you run out of minutes, texts or data you get charged $4.99 for 300 (minutes or MBs) or 500 (texts) more of whatever you ran out of. $4.99/300 = 1.6¢ (plus taxes) per minute or MB or $4.99/500 = 1¢ per text. These are pretty good rates provided you can use the "bonus" up in 60 days or less.

Diversity users can also use add-ons to prevent being charged the $4.99 fee for going over their included minutes, texts or data. The following add-ons  available:
  • Texts: 100 for $1, 1000 for $4, 2000 for $6, 5000 for $8
  • Minutes: 100 for $1.80, 500 for $7, 1000 for $15, 2000 for $25
  • Data (MB) 200 for $3, 500 for $7, 1000 for $8, 2000 for $16
Add-ons are good for 30 days and do not rollover.

Here's a table listing all the plans available to customers activating new lines of service during the promotion. The numbers in the strike-out font are the amount of data included with the non-promo version of the plan:

To use the above table, find your plan in the first column. You can upgrade to the VIP pan in the same row or a row below it. With the exception of Joy to VIP Pepper, you can not downgrade to a VIP plan in a row above your current one.

Confused? Me too. Ringplus user and Discourse forums member 1Birdman1 has posted a spreadsheet comparing  all of RingPlus' plans. He also indicates which plans are the best value.

Finally, like a Steve Jobs keynote, there's "One More Thing". RingPlus_PR posted this on Discourse;

And after we reach 300 new Members (Less than a third what we reach normally during a promotions within a hour) what happens? For every 10 new Members enrolled, loyal members who liked the Live Update Thread will receive 1 more minute, 1 MB Data, up to 200MB Roll Over Allotment (expires after 4 Months).

Update: To enroll in the 1 more minute, 1 MB Data for every 10 new Members enrolled promos current RingPlus members need to enter their phone number and email address on this page. Although the page is titled Diversity Promo Sign Up for RingPlus Members on Discourse RingPlus_PR has assured everyone that signing up there will NOT enroll you in the Diversity plan, just the free minutes and MBs offer.

There's no mention of where this Live Update Thread is. If I find out I'll update this post. Update:

Update 8/26 2:25 PM PDT: The "Live Update Thread" is a new Discourse Forum thread titled "New Promo August 27 Now open" that will presumably appear when the promo opens August 27 at 3 PM PDT. Also RingPlus has clarified that only free plans can be sidegraded. Paid plans can only be upgraded.

Update 8/27 8:45 AM PDT: According to a  Discourse post by RingPlus CEO Karl Seelig, downgrading from Joy to VIP Pepper during today's promo will be allowed.

Update 8/27 12:10 PM PDT: More changes and clarifications. According to a new Discourse post by RingPlus PR:
  • Any free plan can side-grade Pepper to VIP Pepper of Free to VIP Free
  • "House" plans can upgrade to VIP Pepper or higher
  • Joy can side-grade to VIP Joy
  • Joy can downgrade to VIP Pepper
  • Users on any free plan can upgrade to Diversity
  • Users with pending plan changes aren't eligible for this promo and can't cancel the change to participate in it.

  1. I'm getting dizzy from all these promotions. From a business standpoint I can't understand the point of all these slightly different promotions every few days. It must cause headaches on the support end of things as everyone tries to figure out what their plan is.
Perhaps their sole intention is to get new surges of publicity every time they announce a new promotion, so they stay on the front page of prepaidphonenews.com and similar websites?

  2. Can current customers switch to the new Diversity plan?

    1. No it's for new activations only.

  3. Dennis, they just answered me whether or not you can sidegrade a paid plan. The answer is NO: https://discourse.ringplus.net/t/new-promo-thursday-august-27-3-9pm-pdt-questions/4427/55?u=asgalvan

  4. Dennis, it might be worth noting that FierceWireless ran a story about how finally Verizon is allowing non-Verizon branded hardware now.

    1. iPhone 6 and Nexus 6. Only other phones will need to be "certified", which means older phones may not even be added even if they would work like the Nexus 5.

    2. I'n trying to find out if this change will trickle down to Verizon Prepaid and especially to Verizon MVNO's.

I don't have a non-Verizon Nexus 6 or iPhone 6 to test with. But I went to the page mentioned in the Fierce Wireless article Activate a Verizon Phone or Device – Verizon Wireless and tried entering MEIDs from several Verizon phones and it said I could activate any of them on either post paid or prepaid.

Then I tried several Sprint 3G phones that support Verizon's 3G bands and that I have the MSLs for and could manually program for talk and text on Verizon. They all failed including a Nexus S 4G that had been used on PagePlus until recently.

The iPhone 6 and Nexus 6 could already be used on Verizon by inserting a Verizon SIM that had been activated with a Verizon phone. Today's change means that those phones can be used to activate a Verizon SIM. A small step but a good one.

  5. What's the latest and greatest on Ringplus byosd? Is it still totally messed up? Thinking about ebaying one but scared it won't activate...

    1. RingPlus BYOSD seems to have fewer restrictions than other Sprint MVNOs. Lots of Boost, Virgin and Sprint PP phones seem to be activating, As always with Sprint MVNOs check the MEID befor buying or only buy phones from places that will let you return the phone for a full refund.

  6. Dennis, why haven't you made RingPlus your primary phone line? The VIP Plans are tough to beat and they roam on VZ for a reasonable rate. Is thier roaming rate the least expensive (for fallback VZ voice service)?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I have a GSM Note 4 on PTel. My best Sprint Phone is a Nexus S 4G from 2011. I'm hoping to get a better Sprint device for RingPlus soon. Also waiting for my Free to Pepper VIP upgrade to take effect next month so I have some data to play with.

      Delete
    2. Do they really roam on VZ? Has this been confirmed? I didn't know that, but that would be a huge plus, because I have avoided them for fear of being caught w/o service in a remote area.

      Delete
    3. I see the roaming is 14 cents/min and data is .55/min in the link, but do we know for sure that it is VZ??

      Delete
    4. I've never used roaming on RingPlus. I suspect it's typical Sprint roaming which can be on a variety of carriers including Verizon, U.S. Cellular or a regional carrier.

      Delete
    5. So if I have RingPlus (or even Sprint for that matter) and I am in an area that has no coverage from anyone except Verizon, will I definitely get the Verizon signal, or is it possible that Sprint may not have a roaming agreement with VZ in that specific area, even though they have agreements together in many other areas? This has always been something I've wondered about. In other words, does the fact that Sprint and VZ have a roaming agreement mean that you have access to all of VZ's coverage, or only some of VZ's coverage?

  7. I an plan to get a phone and join one of plan. Which phone is better?

    1. If you mean the phones on the RingPlus site I don't think any of them are worth buying. BYOSD is the way to go. Pick your favorite Sprint phone in your price range. But from somewhere that will give you the MEID to check or will let you return the phone for a full refund if it doesn't activate. The Sprint Prepaid LG Volt from BestBuy is a popular inexpensive device.

      Delete
    2. Not any of theirs.

Buy a Volt at Best Buy.

      Delete
    3. BestBuy just dropped the price on the Volt (the best choice for a new phone for RingPlus for the promo offer window on Thursday the 27th imho) back down to $39.99 again "on sale."

It has been alternating between $39.99 and $59.99 but this may not last forever once they clear stocks.

Note FreedomPop is selling refurb B-stock Volt's for $59.99 which shows you the Best Buy is a great deal (by the way it would be an interesting question whether you might be able to activate a Volt on FreedomPop as a FreedomPop device rather than BYOD and thereby avoid the $20 BYOD fee).

      Delete
    4. I activated LG Volt on R+. It is a great phone for the price. It has a TV Remote Built in that Works!

      Delete
  8. Thank you all. Tomorrow go to buy one.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I will go to Best Buy tomorrow and buy a Virgin Mobile Speakeasy and activate in on diversity and then swap to my good phone and then return they speak easy to best buy and get my money back.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I guess you could do it that way, but isn't that sort of taking advantage of a store's return policy by bringing back a new phone that you used that you never intended to keep in the first place? I'd say keep the Speakeasy as a backup phone. It never hurts to have a backup you can immediately swap to if something happens to your primary phone.

    2. No sir. I'm returning it to best buy tomorrow for my money back. I have seven lines on VIP pepper and I have done every line this way. I don't care about Best Buy or any store I just care about myself and what can I get

  13. I just got word from Ring+ that those who are on "pending" status on your plan change that won't be in effect until billing cycle CANNOT TAKE PART of today's promo.

(ie. last week promo, you did Pepper -> VIP Joy since upgrades were only choice and you changed it to be in effect next billing cycle but now Ring+ said you can go Pepper -> VIP Pepper but Ring+ saying you're excluded)

    https://discourse.ringplus.net/t/today-august-27-live-promo-reward-and-questionthread-opening-soon/4493

Wiki post by Ring+ PR regarding upgrades, side-grades, and downgrades:

"If someone has a pending plan change scheduled, they cannot cancel it in order to take part in this promo."

I find this upsetting and alienating a good portion of current/existing users who didn't think side-grades were possible last week because they're all stuck with a plan that can't be change when everyone else can.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Changes to paid plans like Joy are immediate by default so it's unlikely that many users who switched to Joy last week have a pending change.

      Delete
    2. Actually you also have a choice to wait till next billing cycle which some have done so according to comments/posts in Discourse forums. Or you can change it to immediate. Also those who went Free -> VIP Pepper when they wanted VIP Free but couldn't so changed to VIP Pepper only to be notified that it's possible to change to VIP Free but can't because they're pending to VIP pepper. They're all out of the loop!

      Delete
    3. From their forum, they have made an exception for today's windows, and those who upgraded to joy will be able to downgrade it to a free plan.

      Delete
  14. Dennis, I'm confused by the table you made for the Diversity for current customers. The plan only has 250 mins, 280 MB, and 2 cent overages, vs. 300 mins, 300 MB, and automatic $4.99 charge if you are a new customer? So they're different even though they're both still the Diversity Plan?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I am currently on the Pepper plan - using it with my Google Nexus 5.

I was content with using this plan and paying (less than $2.50 a month for extra data. Now that they are going to add extra data (if I can get into the VIP plan), I feel sorry for them that they will never see another cent for from me.

To salve my conscience, I will press 5 a couple of times. I don't really see myself making Ringplus my main phone - given that I was kicked off last year when they started to end their free plans.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was able to change my plan that's currently "pending" to go in effect next cycle to the VIP plan I wanted!

Ring+ and its IT were able to fix this issue and allow those on pending status to change their new plan to a different plan!

    RingPlus_PR:
"----If you have a pending plan change
Yes pending prior changes can be overwritten by new changes"

    1. Anonymous,

Had the same experience activating on Ring+ Diversity today. Account shows a $10 Credit. Curiously my bank shows 2 pending transactions for $6.10. Will see what the morning brings. Perhaps we were charged 2x? Also I note that activating the phone blew through a 100 mb of data.

    1. The Virgin Mobile Speakeasy is popular. Just about any Boost, Virgin or Sprint prepaid phone seems to work. I'm using an old Boost Samsung Factor.

    2. Thanks Dennis, that is helpful :)

  19. To activate a Virgin Phone, Use the MSL 847446 given below instead ot the one they give you. I was able to activate a Virgin Phone that way This is reprinted from the RingPlus Discourse:.

But with that said, if activation was successful, I doubt it being a Virgin phone is the reason you're having problems. Read through this thread, if you haven't already. Also, specifically for some Virgin phones, you may need to enter ##847446# to get to the phone's setup menu.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You're right, I'd forgotten about that one. ##847446#, which is ##VIRGIN# on an old school phone dial pad, gets you into the manual programming screens on most Virgin Mobile phones.

Another useful code is ##72786# which prompts you to enter your MSL and then erases the phone's network settings forcing it to do a "hands free activation". I'm not sure if this works on Virgin Mobile phones but it worked for me to set a Boost Mobile Samsung Factor with everything working including Web.

For Nexus phones use *#*#72786#*#* instead of ##72786#.
