Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Aug 30 - Sep 5

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring all the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the 16 GB version of the unlocked 3rd generation Motorola Moto G which is back in stock on the Motorola site for $219.99.

$219.99 is the regular price rather than a sale price, but I'm calling this a deal because the 2015 Moto G in its 16 GB form is in my opinion the best of this year's crop of affordable, yet powerful unlocked phones. It's also very hard to find in stock anywhere.

The 16 GB 3rd generation Moto G's best feature is its 2 GB of RAM for smoother performance and  better multi-tasking. Other specs include a 1.4 Ghz Snapdragon 410 processor, 13 MP camera with auto-focus and flash, 5 MP front-facing camera, 5 inch 1280x720 Gorilla Glass 3  screen and a microSD card slot.  It supports all of AT&T and T-Mobile's bands except T-Mobile's new LTE band 12.

Other especially good prepaid deals this week include:

  2. Hey Dennis can you look into this new MVNO called Smartel. They have this promo going on for a Unlimited Talk n Text with 10GB of data with data stash for $35 a month. If they are legit then I plan on switching to them.

    1. I've been following the Smartel story. I recommend waiting a bit until we know more about this company and what they are selling.

    3. I just sign up for Smartel 35 dollars a month for 10gb is a steal plus roll over too. All on T-mobile network. Tax and fees are included. Should get my sim card sometime next week.

    5. So I shot them an email yesterday about what T-Mobile features they offer and this is the reply I got back.
Thank you for your interest in Smartel.mobi. We currently offer Data Stash, Music Freedom, WiFi Hotspot and WiFi Calling. Hopefully we'll be able to offer more features at a later date.

  3. I can't recommend a $200 Moto G when a new Nexus 5 can now be had for about the same price. Nexus 5 is a lot more phone.

    1. Do you have a link for a new Nexus 5 @ $200.

I have to admit, I think the Moto G as a "deal" is a bit tepid. G2s, G3s and Flex 2s have been available recently for about the same price (or slightly more) as the G (which ends up being $235 after taxes).

    2. There are a few links for Nexus 5 in the article - use a Ctrl-F search on the page.

Not new N5's as far as I can tell, which is what the post above was talking about.

    4. Yes. The poster above is being asked for links to the new n5 phones @ $200 that he/she mentioned.

  4. The 3rd generation Moto G is a wonderful phone. I just bought one for my wife to replace an older Samsung Galaxy phone. For comparison, my current phone is a 1st generation Moto X Developers Edition. For those of you are comparing specifications to other phones, I will point out that the Moto G3, like my Moto X Dev Ed, has no phone company bloatware and all updates come directly (and quickly) from Motorola. This by itself trumps most other phones. Furthermore, the display and camera are both very good. GPS lock takes just a few seconds, and even works indoors. Our old Samsung phone would take several minutes to get a GPS lock. I personally think that it is silly to demand 1080p or more on a phone. 720p looks just fine and I am not going to watch movies on my phone. I have a 50-inch plasma TV for that!

    1. But it has plenty of Google bloatware!
I had to root the phone to get rid of their bloatware which is a huge RAM hogger.
Motorola makes unlocking the bootloader a chore as well.
Otherwise yes, wonderful phone. I have the 1st generation Moto G and it is still running great!

      Delete
    2. If you're only concerned about RAM (and not ROM) hogging, you can disable almost any Google app without root.

Also, I was under the impression that Motorola is one of the more dev-friendly OEMs when it comes to bootloader unlocking, etc. I think it's only easier with a Nexus device?

      Delete
    3. I am the OP. My wife's new Moto G3 shows 400MB RAM for system and about 230MB RAM for background Google and Motorola app services (with all user programs closed) if I exclude third party services like Facebook. It shows 380MB RAM including third party app services. This leaves over a GB (2GB total) to run her favorite apps. I am not seeing the problem with RAM hogs here unless one has the 1GB RAM Moto G.

Phone company bloatware would be on top of this, and more bothersome.

I would also point out that Motorola shipped the 1st gen Moto X Developers Edition with an unlockable bootloader. You should have bought this edition of the Moto X if an unlocked bootloader is important to you.

  5. The problem I have with non carrier locked phones is the native hotspot won't work. Plus a couple other native carrier apps, am I the only one who cares? !

    1. Maybe it's just your carrier's fault and not the device itself. I'm currently using an Amazon Fire Phone on T-Mobile and the WiFi hotspot works fine.

    1. They are all very good values. Only you can decide which is best for you.

    2. I picked up a 1st gen Moto G from Cricket last year for $50 AR. It's a great phone that has kept my attention for an unusually long time (I rarely go 15 months without an upgrade). Maybe I'll be on this phone for another 6 months or more.

That said, I don't recommend the G 2015, at least not for $219. Once Moto pushed the Snapdragon 410 into the Moto E line, they really needed to go with the Snapdragon 615 to differentiate the middle-market segment (like the Idol 3 did). This cpu/gpu upgrade is worth the extra $20-30 IMO.

That said, if you can live with a Snapdragon 4xx, you might as well save yourself $150-200 and go with the 1st Gen Moto G, or the 2nd Gen Moto E LTE which are available on many carriers for $0-60. Different people care about different specs though. I'm not weighting screen size (past 4.5"), resolution (past HD), Android version (past KK), modem (past HSPA+), or camera very heavily. I'd take the G over the E personally (320 -vs- 240 dpi plus camera flash), but the G is harder to find in a GSM model these days.

This is a "prepaid" phone web page, that is, we discuss phones that are purchased at full price up front. We do not compare prepaid prices to phones that are subsidized by a phone contract which ends up costing much more money in the the long run.

      Delete
    4. Of course this is a "prepaid" phone web page. I wasn't talking about any deals other that what yeswap has linked from this very page. When I say "from a carrier", I mean ordering a device with MVNO firmware / simlock (which are often heavily subsidized) from the carrier retail chain -vs- an unlocked device from the OEM retail chain.

      For instance,

Boost Mobile Moto E LTE Android phone $59.99 (reg $99.99) at BestBuy and Amazon

      is an "especially good deal"

While the $149.99 OEM unlocked variant is ... not even listed on this page.

      http://www.motorola.com/us/smartphones/moto-e-2nd-gen/moto-e-2nd-gen.html

TextNow has the free (refurb) Moto G (no contract).

      Delete
    5. The free TextNow phone you referred to is a used 1st gen Moto G phone (4.5" screen). The $149 Moto G currently sold by Motorola is the 2nd generation Moto G (5" screen), and is not listed here probably because the new 3rd generation Moto G is a much better buy at $179 if you compared models with the same 1GB RAM.

I ... wouldn't spend more than $50-100 on a phone personally, and was trying to provide a counterpoint to the OP asking in the $229 - $299 range, but whatever makes you happy.

  10. If I buy one of the Virgin Mobile phones, and turns out I don't like virgin Mobile, would I be able to use the phone some place else. A different MVNO.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Officially, Virgin Mobile phones can't be used on MVNOs until after they have been used on Virgin for 12 months. However, Virgin phones are currently activating on Sprint MVNO RingPlus regardless of whether they were used on Virgin or not. This is a loophole could close at any time.

  12. Hello, can one activate the Sprint Prepaid Moto E LTE on Ringplus? I notice that it is on sale at Bestbuy for $40? Also, can this same phone work on GSM networks?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. People have been activating Sprint PP phones, including the Moto E on RingPlus for some time now. That loophole could be closed at any time but RingPlus has said they won't kick prepaid phones off if it does.

I've heard the Sprint Moto E can be unlocked for non-US GSM networks but not for US ones.

  13. I've made online purchase of Sprint Prepaid cell phone from Best Buy. The invoice shows the serial number(usually part of it is MEID or IMEI) is N/A. Will this be a problem when activating the phone? Should I bring it to the store to re-do it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It might mean the phone wasn't scanned properly at Best Buy or it might mean nothing. I don't know enough about BestBuy point of sale systems to say if serial number N/A is an issue or not. You should be able to enter the MEID (printed on the box) on the Sprint Prepaid or RingPlus activation page. If it's accepted you are good to go, if it's rejected return the phone.
