Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Sep 13 - Sep 19

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post featuring all the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week pick is the manufacturer refurbished 1st generation Motorola X LTE Android phone which is available from a number of eBay sellers with high positive feedback numbers for a little over $100 with free shipping. Here are a few examples:

The 1st gen Moto X sold for $499.99 when it launched on 2013. It has a dual core 1.7 Ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 4.7" 720x1280px screen, 10 MP autofocus main camera with flash and a 2MP front camera.

Motorola's light weight, near stock version of Android makes the Moto X very responsive in spite of only having a dual-core processor. It features the rather neat Active Display, which lights up the screen when you pick it up to show your missed calls, texts and upcoming calendar events on the lock screen.  The Moto X shipped with KitKat. Lollipop is available now for the  AT&T version and is expected for the Verizon model soon.

  1. So, if these were your choices, and your looking for your next phone to be one you are with for anywhere from 2 to 5 years, which one would you go with and why:
    • Cricket Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE
    • Unlocked Moto G 16GB 3rd gen LTE
    • Unlocked ASUS ZenFone 2 16 GB
    • Unlocked Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3

    1. I would not go with the S4. I think by this point is a little too old.

I like the G as long as you get the one with 2gb of RAM.

The other have plenty of fans too but I am not as familiar with them.

By the way.....there's little chance you will want to keep using any of these phones 3 years from now.

    2. I would also go with the Moto G for it's near stock Android build and Motorola's reputation for quality, warranty support, timely OS updates.

The Asus and the Alcatel are good choices and will out-perform the Moto G but I'm a little concerned about both companies' build quality and support.

    3. I'd consider instead getting Dennis' pick of the week, the 1st Gen Moto X LTE. Save the $80-$100 difference in price for when you want to upgrade in a couple years.

    4. I went with the 3rd gen Moto G for my wife and my phone is a 1st gen Moto X Dev Edition! You can't go wrong either way as both are great for just over US$200 each. As Dennis commented, both are near stock Android builds. Unfortunately, the Moto X models mentioned in the main article have phone company software.

    5. I would suggest Alcatel IDOL 3 over other phones...

  2. I too would go with the moto g. I have a 2nd generation ,no lte, and it's been a good phone for me. My second choice would be the Galaxy s4 with the only negative being the older operating system. I don't know if its upgradable. The Asus and Alcatel are larger phones, phablets ?. I've read the Asus comes with lots of bloatware and the screen may be a little dim. The Alcatel supposedly runs very hot when doing anything video intensive. Thank you Snapdragon ! Hope this helps.

  3. Thank you everyone thus far for your suggestions. Keep em coming. So, it's looking like the Moto G 16gb is the one to go with. I was thinking the Galaxy S4 considering it started of at a price significantly higher than the Moto G, so I figured it had better specs, but I guess after a year or two, the specs are outdated in comparison to newer phones. I too, like someone else mentioned, wonder if the OS can be upgraded to lollipop.

I haven't looked thoroughly at these phones, so I will have to see which one has the best features for me, especially screen size, internal storage, and definitely 2GB of RAM as I am tired of phones that start out great and then get very sluggish. Regarding screen size, I am finding the size of my ZTE Overture 2 to be large enough--and it's also a horrible phone: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkFXE0w0gMZx9PeNLJDY4DutZEo0W8S3a and I have now ran out of internal space though I have what I consider very little apps installed and a majority of them moved to the SD card. In addition to that, don't know why, the phone keeps losing GPS signal. So often when using it, I hear: "GPS Signal Lost".

I found this interesting article and video discussing the Moto G 3rd Gen vs. the Alcatel Idol 3 if anyone wants to view it and discuss it here on prepaidphonenews: http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2015/08/19/moto-g-3rd-gen-vs-alcatel-idol-3-budget-battle/

  4. IMHO, the S4 & the Moto G would be my choice. The S4 currently runs on 4.4 Kit or 5.0 Lollipop depending on the wireless provider. KitKat 4.4 is very stable and dependable, whereas 5.0 still has many issues to work through. The advantage with the S4 is: camera/video is superb, has many after market accessories, screen is a dazzling 1080p full HD, an external microSD slot AND this one is Very important, a REMOVABLE BATTERY. Why? Think about it, after 2 to 4yrs...that battery is NOT going to hold much of a charge, especially how much we spend on our smartphones these days. You insert a new battery and voila-it's back to it's longevity. Let's face it, battery technology has NOT kept up with newer smartphones. If having the latest & greatest Android OS is killer for you, then the 2015 Moto G 3rd Gen is definitely for you then. It's an awesome smartphone with almost ZERO bloat and fast, timely updates...but what will happen to your battery after 2 or say 3 years??? Yes, you could buy a battery pack and always have it plugged into the Moto G, LOL.

  5. eBay seller has the LG G2 for $135 for Verizon or PagePlus. Comes in black or white and is A stock. Great phone and a very good deal. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-VS980-G2-32GB-Android-Verizon-Wireless-4G-LTE-Black-and-White-Smartphone/381375077488?rmvSB=true

    1. Yeah, the HTC Desire 510 and the Kyocera Rise are $50 off. Neither is a great phone. They are both EOL and I suspect that Virgi is just trying to get rid of them.

  7. What would be the point of paying $4.99 for a SIM kit from AT&T?

I've walked into a corporate AT&T store and asked for a SIM and they gave it to me free of charge

    1. paying $4.99 online versus driving much distance & time ... for some would consider cheaper... but some drive across town to "save a buck" every situation requires some personal consideration... as Dennis/ prepaidphonenews covers the whole country and some internationals too! Keep sharing the options MR. D. and everyone choose what may work best for them!

  8. http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/16/9337115/end-of-smartphone-carrier-retail-stores-mossberg

dennis, you could put your own spin on this linked mossberg column. mossberg says smartphones need to be set free. but byop, mvnos, and the ability to port phones have already set this in motion. it just that most of the general public are locked into the big four major providers.

  9. Why are you pushing used refurbed crap. If you need a phone buy a new one. If you can't afford it you're probably not smart enough to use it either.

    1. Manufacturer refurbished should be functionally equivalent to new.
