The Nation's First LGBTQ Mobile Operator, PRIDE Wireless, Launches

PRIDE Wireless (855-774-3379), the nation's first lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) wireless company, launched Oct. 11, National Coming Out Day.

Funded in part by an Indiegogo campaign and founded by and for LGBTQ people, PRIDE donates a portion of its revenue to the LGBTQ community. Through the PRIDE Wireless' giveback plan, subscribers  choose a non-profit organization from a list of non-profits that support LGBTQ health, safety and equality. The chosen organization will receive an initial $10, then 2.5 percent of the subscriber's monthly service plan fee thereafter.

Based on their coverage map, PRIDE Wireless is a T-Mobile MVNO. According to the PRIDE website, off network roaming is included, however the map shows T-Mobile native coverage only.

PRIDE supports BYOP with SIM cards priced at $9.99 plus $7.95 for shipping. If you need a phone, PRIDE offers a large selection at prices ranging from $75 for the BLU Studio 5.0 to $899 for the 16 GB iPhone 6s Plus.

PRIDE Wireless offers individual and family monthly plans and a pay as you plan.  The following individual monthly plans are available.

Plan Minutes Texts MMS Data
$35/month Unlimited
Unlimited
N/A N/A
$45/month Unlimited Unlimited
Unlimited Unlimited, first 1 GB at high speed
$55/month Unlimited Unlimited
Unlimited Unlimited, first 3 GB at high speed
$75/month Unlimited Unlimited
Unlimited Unlimited, first 5 GB at high speed

PRIDE's Family Choice plan is priced at $90/month for two lines of service. Each line gets unlimited talk, text and data with the first 3 GB at full LTE speeds and the rest throttled to an unspecified speed. Additional lines are $45/month with each added line getting the same unlimited talk, text and data (first 3 GB at high speed).

For users who run out of high speed data, additional data is available at $5 for 250 MB or $15 for 1 GB. Add-on data expires at the end of the current plan month.

PRIDE customers can save $5 /month  by enrolling in the company's Snap Pay automatic renewal program.

A Pay As You Go Plan is listed on the PRIDE website however it's not clear how it works. The plan is described as "$15 Talk & Text, no activation, expires after one year, no auto refill".  There's no mention of what the per minute or per text rates are. Although the site's wording suggests that $15 is good for a year's service, I suspect it's $15 per month and air time rolls over for one year like it does with PTEL, another T-Mobile MVNO.

I contacted PRIDE's customer support but the CSR didn't know the details of the pay as you go plan and promised to have someone call me back with the details. I'll update the post if and when I hear back.

With an estimated 8 million LGBTQ people in the US, there's certainly a market for a service like PRIDE Wireless. Prices do seem on the high side, but users get the benefit of supporting and giving back to their own community. If you decide to try PRIDE Wireless you can get the first month of service for free by texting TRYPRIDE to 34329.

  1. Everybody will call this as awesome deal because of political correctness, even though it's not.

    1. "political correctness..." No, because they support dignity and respect for all, whether they are gay or straight...

    2. No, the activists do not respect or even accept the opinions of people who do not agree with them. Indignation, not dignity.

    3. Totally agree! And if you don't agree with the social agenda of these promiscuity-defending, anti-family, Christian-persecuting hate groups, you're automatically labelled by as homophobic. So no thanks! Good thing this MVNO is probably gonna fold within 6 months.

    1. "lgbtq" means "lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, or queer".

  3. Lousy pricing, are we actually allowed to say that about pride?

    1. the old, "they want special treatment" argument. Of course, gays are not offended by your discussing the merits/demerits of a cellphone plan.

  4. No thanks. Price are too high for too little. Don't care about gay people.

    2. The above comment, "... you actually don't care about people, period." was mine and I offer my deepest apologies for assuming the worst based on what was actually a neutral statement on your part.

Sometimes the shrillest voices in the room are those of people trying to exorcise their own demons -- in my case a homophobic past as bigoted as they come. Again, my apologies and best wishes.

  5. This will be shutdown before 2017. I understand probably some rich investor thought of the concept with this gay movement going on. However, these new MVNO's really need to do market research because these plan pricings are ridiculous even if it's giving back to the gays. I never understood why a investor wouldn't do commercials on there new MVNO's. Most people in America probably less than 3 percent get on these tech sites. So, most people will never hear about this; which ultimately will cause them to eventually fail.

    1. "I never understood why a investor wouldn't do commercials on there (sic) new MVNO's." Commercials (TV) are too expensive for a low-margin MVNO to buy.

    2. "... this gay movement...", "... the gays..." no, buddy... it's a human rights movement.

    3. Of course it is. A special class of rights based on a unique type of orientation and behavior.

  6. Really?, Pride Wireless the nation's first LGBTQ wireless company! What idiot came up with this?
What next?, 420 Wireless - The nation's first weed awareness wireless company.
Cheeseburger Wireless - The nation's first Obesity is healthy wireless company.
Donald Trump Wireless - The nation's first wireless company that prohibits Mexicans from service while deporting any that tries to sign up while at the same time hiring Mexicans for customer support.
CIA Wireless - The nation's first wireless company where all proceeds go to overthrowing foreign governments and supporting terrorism around the world.

I give Pride Wireless a few months before lights out.

    2. There are T-Mobile MVNO's targeted to all kinds of subsets of wireless users. Gay money is the same color as everybody else's: green.

  7. Only LBGTQ who have "come out" would buy this service if the phone displays "Pride" as the carrier. The potential market may be much smaller than the whole community.

    1. actually, if T-Mobile operated in my state, and their prices were a little better, this "Straight-But-Not-Narrow" dude would sign up and would be glad to show off the "PRIDE" icon on my phone.

  8. Finally! I've been looking for a good lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer wireless company and I've finally found it! I figure that I'm LGBTQ and I have a LGBTQ phone, so it makes sense for me to have a LGBTQ wireless provider.

    1. I would agree with your facetious reply, except that this company will actually give money to furthering LGBTQ rights. Would you feel the same if they were supporting "breast cancer awareness", or another cause that you support?

      Delete
    2. "Playfully jocular; humorous:?" Absolutely. But of course you are offended that somebody (apparently) does not agree with the cause you support. No respect or dignity for that opinion.

    3. "Would you feel the same if they were supporting "breast cancer awareness", or another cause that you support?"

Yes, because they hardly donate anything.

Look at their $35/month plan. No Data. They'll donate $10 when you sign up to the LGBTQ related cause of your choice, but after that, they just donate 2.5 percent of your monthly bill.

      88 cents a month!

These guys are just capitalizing off of people who want to support these causes because their prices are inflated and very little of that goes to the charities. The money they donate isn't coming out of their bottom line. It's the customers that are paying more than they normally would, and the difference they're paying is not going to their favorite charity.

Instead of any of these plans, a person could just go to a cheaper provider and donate a larger sum of money to the charity of their choice.

For instance, instead of the unlimited talk/text - no data $35/month plan which donates $10 up front and then 88 cents/month thereafter, a person could sign up with Lycamobile's $19/month plan wich also gives unlimited talk/text, then instead of letting most of the $16 dollar difference lining the pockets of PRIDE wirelss, that $16 savings can be donated to the customers choice of LGBTQ related charities.

So, yeah, $16/month to donate to charity vs $10 upfront + $0.88/month donated to charity? I think this LGBTQ phone service is for suckers.

And, yes, I cringe whenever I see a business trying to lure in customers using "breast cancer awareness" and I find it tacky when I see people use religion (e.g. Christian Plumbing Service) to attract visitors.

Save your money by going with a provider that has better prices and what you save can be used to donate a lot more than if you go with these panderers.

    4. how about Breast Mobile for those who support breast health.

or how about Topless Wireless for pole dancers.

or how about Church-of-No-Brains Mobile for the religious nuts who proudly display they have no brains.

this is affinity marketing. they are trying to attract customers who have an affinity to something.

obviously the conservative christian right people (who would never be caught attending a gay pride parade) would not have an affinity for Pride Wireless. so Pride Wireless could care nothing about any pointless criticism posted here. the pride market is just another market to exploit and make money off of.

  9. Gays are supposed to have more disposable income, so maybe the price won't put them off. And the charity thing will be sure to grab attention. But gays are just like everyone else, most will want to be on Verizon or At&t. Especially at these prices.

    1. Do some math: 58M Tmo customers x.03 potential LGBTQ x.33 guess on how many are "out" x.5 amount who are willing go through the hassle of switching and porting to support the cause = 287K subscribers. Change the factors to calculate your own estimate. Some LGBTQ and their supporters would buy a new phone, have an unlocked phone that would work or try to get theirs unlocked, so you can guess about potential network switchers as well.
