  3. @Dennis Bournique:

Last year, you had two separate pages for Black Friday deals: one page for in-store deals, and one page for online deals. Are you going to do it that same way this year, or will all of the Black Friday deals be on one page?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I plan to do two pages again. The online deals don't leaked early, so the online tracker probably won't appear for a couple more weeks.

    Hi Dennis,

What would you pick if given the option to buy only one one:
    - Boost Mobile Motorola Moto E LTE Android phone $29.99
    or the,
    - Boost Mobile Samsung Galaxy Prevail LTE Android phone $39.99

I'm looking to give one as an early Chanukah present.

    2. Microsoft Lumia 640 for 30 is a steal. It's can be unlock be AT&T for free.

      Delete
    3. The crippled dying Windows phone OS makes the Lumia 640 like a great dumbphone *cough* "feature phone". And that's a great price for a super dumbphone.

I recommend the Moto E for around this price instead. Much more useful, and is a real current smartphone. Even if the camera is bad.

      Delete
    4. Windows 8.1 and 10 are hardly "dying." I like them both a lot better than the kluge named Android. Nobody needs 1M apps to feel good about their OS. Windows phone is a better UI, regardless of popularity. It's easier to use, safer and looks a lot better. Too bad MSFT isn't marketing it adequately.

      Delete
    5. Nobody needs a million apps. but they need useful apps. Windows Phone has far fewer useful apps... including the fact that selections are inferior or nonexistent in entire categories compared to Android... and what it has are often forgotten, out of date, i know this from experience

"Easier to use" goes out the window when you find that the dying Windows Phone OS has nothing that will do what you want,

"Safer" is perfectly in line with the dumpphone aspect. No apps has a good side effect of no malware, too.

:"Looks better" is a form over function copout: the most important thing about a phone is what it does, not its color.

      http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/mobile/personalize/lumia640/
You can customize the UI in a few ways using the sim. The best thing about Win 10 Mobile is the integration with the desktop/laptop version.

      Delete
    7. Lumia will gets new OS updates where moto E is dead in the water with no upgrades. Only the Nexus line of phones are worth having.

      Delete
    8. And Nexus is way down on my list of brands I'd consider. *shrug*.

    9. Top Android apps in every category leak phone data and private details for unknown purposes far more than iOS or Windows phone apps, according to a recent MIT and CMI study. I'll bet those apps ARE more useful..... to the developers. Only one Windows phone app was found to leak data in another study. So in addition to being more hackable, your Android apps have a high likelihood to giving away your PII. Not nice. But I guess you'd expect that when none of the Play Store apps are curated or tested before placement there. You are the beta tester, and it's your personal data at risk. All that data transmission runs down your battery and uses up your data plan, too.
      http://news.thewindowsclub.com/ios-android-apps-found-leaking-sensitive-user-information-80843/

      Delete
    10. And there is a distinct lack of top Windows Phone apps in most categories (mentioning Windows Phone's failure as an app platform which has rendered their devices into being nothing but slightly-more-than-dumbphones). As for "curation" by a single company. that is a rather North Korean approach. Apps should be driven by user need, not capricious suits in ivory towers.

"Only one Windows phone app was found to leak data in another study."

Of course, there are so few apps. If Windows Phone were an actual usable app platform with a decent amount of user options, the situation would be a lot worse. Remember: a bar of soap carved in the shape of a smartphone is the most secure phone in the world. No malware.... ever. Windows Phone devices are more like this bar of soap than like a real smartphone.

Curation means such silliness as Apple banning Flash video and preventing people from running Swype on iPhones unless they are jailbroken: very user-hostile decisions.

And I've got news for you: everywhere, you are the beta tester.

    11. From earlier this year

      http://bgr.com/2015/08/03/windows-phone-failure-microsoft-engineer/

"By the time Microsoft got its act together a few years later, it was too little too late. When Windows Phone was introduced in late 2010, the smartphone market had already become a two-horse race, with Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android leading the charge. Despite a slow and steady stream of improvements to the Windows Phone OS over the years, consumers collectively yawned, and sometimes laughed, at Microsoft’s noble, but ultimately fruitless, efforts to take away meaningful market share from iOS and Android.

Despite Microsoft’s vast resources, they simply couldn’t compete in a mobile oriented market that had quickly pegged them as irrelevant. Indeed, even as Windows Phone launched, many were quick to proclaim that the initiative was doomed from the start."

    12. Above posts at 2:06 and 2:13 are old news: Looking Backward. Windows 10, with a unified development platform and Win10 integration across different devices (like iOS) is getting MSFT back in the game. https://dev.windows.com/en-us They may still botch it, but it's too early to write off Windows Phone. The average phone user only installs a few apps, and Android makes it very hard to install more than a handful on almost all entry-level phones anyway.

      Delete
    13. "....is getting MSFT back in the game...."

I hope so, but the thrust of your last comment is that there's a bright future for it. However, the reality is that the promised reality never came about. And based on track record, there's not the best chance that it will. So those seeking a full smartphone experience with state-of-the-art apps and adequate choices NOW had best pass Windows Phone by, even though someday, maybe, things could get a lot better.

I have a dozen or so on my new Moto E phone. I think that this phone could be considered entry-level at this point in history. Do we really want to count burners at all? I know I can install many many more apps on this Moto E too.

    Replies
    1. Cheapest means free. Tell all your friends, family and co-workers (if you have any) that you will recycle their old smartphone for free after they buy a new one on Black Friday. Save the planet, blah blah blah. You need a T-Mobile, unlocked GSM or Verizon 4G LTE dual-mode phone, or a Sprint dual-mode phone that Sprint has unlocked for domestic use. In order of ease of use, pick any iPhone, then Windows Phone, Android, and finally the Nokia Symbian Anna OS. Ask your local cellphone shop to trim or stamp your SIM card to a smaller size if necessary, so you won't have to waste 99c on a new SIM. If you're nice, that service will be free as well.

You might have to pay for the SIM in a brick and mortar store but you may order it online and use the coupon FREESIM at checkout to get it in the mail. I paid $16 for mine in a store to power my iPad 3 A&TT... Now on T-Mobile!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Best Buy for me started selling some time before 2:00 central time. They still have the Nokia Lumia 640 for $29.99 and Verizon Motorola Moto E for $9.99. Again if you research above, the Moto E can be brought to AT&T after changing developer settings.

Also, the Nokia Lumia can be brought to an AT&T provider by putting your already activated GSM SIM into the lumia 640 or unlock the phone at AT&T website with the option of non-AT&T user because after all, if you are going to take it to another AT&T based provider, AT&T still gets use from the phone! This is something Verizon and Sprint/companies could learn from or AT&T will still be taking the business from Verizon/Sprint.

Choice is yours Verizon and Sprint!

I intend to use them as mini computers in my classroom. I did miss the Nokia 640 deal though! Do you do a list for cyber Monday? I really want a cheap Windows phone with decent sized screen.

  34. Samsung galaxy grand prime at Walmart is still showing up as full price of 199.99. I thought you said it was going to be 49.99?

    1. I amused that all of Walmart's in-store deals would also be available online. I was wrong, the $49.99 Grand Prime seems to be in-store only.

  35. Family Dollar a few miles away from me store in metro Atlanta scanned this one is and it was still $39.99. Maybe the your price is not for all areas. No Dollar General close so I ordered for $29.00 w/FS . Good price phones for my younger family members who seem break them regularly.

  36. "AT&T GoPhone ZTE Maven with free $45 airtime $39.99 (reg $59.99 w/o airtime)"

To clarify, according to the box the device comes in, the $45 airtime is credited upon activation and not a top up pin card. Maybe I was the only one, but I had hoped that you could use the $45 and the phone separately.

  37. Hi Dennis:

Thanks to your tips, I got my first windows phone -- Lumia 640 @ Best Buy for $30. I am going to use it as a small portable tablet to surf the web when I have free wifi like Starbucks. Nice big 5" screen which is a lot bigger than my iPhone 5S. I can't believe the phone was only $30 with tax. Nice thing about this phone is that I can create spreadsheets! Thanks again.

  38. Thank you for this detailed information. We were looking for an inexpensive phone to give our 10 year old when he goes to hang out at the comic book store. My research shows that I can put a GoPhone on our mobile share account with AT&T so I purchased 2 of the Z222 so when he looses it we will have a backup. I toyed with the idea of the Maven but I prefer a more basic phone for now with just phone and text. Many thanks again.

  39. AT&T Gophone Nokia Lumia 640 from BF Bestbuy ad was successfully used on Tracfone for me. Take out AT&T SIM Card under battery>place Tracfone activated SIM card in its Place>turn on and go to SIM card settings in phone>change APN settings for internet and data. APN settings for the 8.1 Windows OS can be found at this link: https://apn.gishan.net/settings/os_15_25_windows_phone_8.1microsoft_windows_phone_8.1_internet_and_mms_settings_for_tracfone.php

Everything should work. If it doesn't google howard forums or turk forums for BYOP AT&T GSM topics and register and leave your problem at either site under those and someone can gladly help with problem.
