MetroPCS Launches $5/Month Unlimited Canada and Mexico Add-On

T-Mobile owned MetroPCS launched a new international add-on called North America Unlimited today. For an $5 extra per month it gives customers on MetroPCS plans priced at $40 and higher the following international features:

  • Unlimited calling from the US to mobile and landline numbers in Canada and Mexico.
  • Unlimited texting from the US to Canada and Mexico and most other countries worldwide.
  • Unlimited calling, texting and data while roaming in Canada and Mexico.
North America Unlimited replaces MetroPCS's existing $5/month Mexico Unlimited add-on which includes unlimited calling and texting to Mexico and unlimited voice, text and data roaming in Mexico. Current Mexico Unlimited customers will automatically be upgraded to North America Unlimited.

North America Unlimited is available starting today, December 18.  MetroPCS customers with a $40 or higher plan can add the new feature online, by calling 611, or at any MetroPCS store. The following MetroPCS plans are eligible for North America Unlimited.

  • $40/month - unlimited calling and messaging, unlimited data throttled to 128 Kpbs after 3 GB
  • $50/month - unlimited calling and messaging, unlimited data throttled to 128 Kpbs after 5 GB
  • $60/month - unlimited calling and messaging and data on phone. Hotspot data  throttled to 128 Kpbs after 8 GB

  2. currently on gophone $45 plan and seriously thinking about switching to metropcs $30 plan or ptel $30 plan. want to save on monthly cost. really use maybe 200-300 mb data at most. assuming short codes work on both metropcs and ptel. have used tmobile before and found that reception is good. there is a metropcs store near me, so metropcs wins because of that for me. but want to know if there is anything specific on either metropcs or ptel that others can comment on to steer me one way or the other.

    1. Why don't u take $20 plan from ptel or givmobile?. U can get sim card from Fry's store too for $4.99 only. Very good deal if u need 250mb data. Or even u can take $30 plan which gives $5 Intl call too.

    2. Do those $20 plans include cheap roaming in Canada?

    3. I would like to know that too. I'm going to Canada for a week soon and I'll need maybe 50 minutes, 100 MB, and some SMS.

If one of those $20 plans will do it, that's much easier than trying to figure out the Canadian MVNO.

    4. PTel and Giv are out of business and their plans never included roaming in Canada.

US prepaid plans that include Canadian roaming are the: AT&T GoPhone $60 plan, Cricket $50 and higher plans, T-Mobile $50 and higher Simple Choice Plans and MetroPCS $40 and higher plans with the $5/month North America Unlimited add-on

  3. Glad to see Metro responding to Cricket. Not sure why they didn't launch with Mexico months ago. I hope they drop the ridiculous $5 charge for call forwarding. It also wouldn't kill them to align their prices with Cricket on group rates. Seems like Boost/Virgin comes out 2 steps behind again.

  4. I went to a MetroPcs store two days ago to switch from my $80 unlimited T-Mobile acc't. The employees there did know how the new sales tax on prepaid in CA will affect Metro's $60 price. Plus they could tell me about the priority in the network between T-Mobile & Metro. So I decided to renew for another month at $80 & wait and see how the dust settles with the new sales tax.

  5. Dennis... On Cricket if I'm remembering correctly there was a percentage limit on how much you could use the roaming out of country feature.. Does MetroPCS also have these using out of country limits in Canada and Mexico by using this add-on??

    1. They do. Its less than 50% of total usage, or you are toast. The good news, even if they cancel your account for "abuse", you can immediately turn around and get a new account with Metro, and they will even let you keep your number.
