Sprint Prepaid Moto E LTE
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post listing the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Motorola Moto E (2nd gen) LTE Android phone for Sprint Prepaid which is on sale for $39.99 at BestBuy.The regular price is $69.99.

What makes this a great deal is that in addition to working on Sprint Prepaid, The Moto E can also be activated on freemium Sprint MVNO RingPlus.

  1. What's up with these decent mid-range Motorola's without a simple camera flash, Even the cheapie ZTE /kyocera phones have them.

    1. Designing a phone to a price point involves a lot of compromises. The Moto E trades a camera flash for a better screen, better RF and less bloatware.

    2. Everything below flagship is a compromise. If flash photography is important to you, there are many phones you can buy with a flash. Motorola is known for their radios, not their cameras, and their phones reflect that. Personally, I'm very happy with my Moto G but I rarely take photographs, except on vacation when I carry a real camera.

    3. "Everything below flagship is a compromise."

I used to not think so, now I have trouble accepting less than a flagship other than burners to use as MP3 players.

But the state of hardware degradation is such that I can be at times incredulous that the burners have removable batteries, micro SD slot, or keyboard, and the flagships that cost 10 times as much more more lack all of these.

"Motorola is known for their radios, not their cameras"

      My experience also.

    4. I know It's probably weird, and I probably take maybe 2 pictures a month but my minimum requirements are an led notification light and a camera flash with a screen between 4.5-5", I love everything else about the Motorolas.

    2. This the week people are buying stuff with their holiday gift cards, retailers don't need to cut prices.

  4. Good point on the gift card redemption, I'm one of them, I'm definitely less price sensitive with them.my very kind and generous siblings got me a target branded /visa gift card fur my phone fetish.

  5. Sprint Moto E from BestBuy can be activated on Ringplus? I thought it have to be on a plan for 12month?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. New, never activated Boost, Virgin and Sprint Prepaid phones have been activating on RingPlus for several months. It's a loophole so it could go away tomorrow but it still works AFAIK. I activated a Boost Moto E a couple of weeks ago.

    2. I did this same thing a couple of months ago.

    3. will 12 months on ringplus satisfy the sprint 12 month rule, like if you're thinking about leaving ringplus for ting or whoever?

      Delete
    4. I don't know but the Boost Moto E that I activated on RingPlus also passed the Ting checker.

  6. I see a iPhone 5s listed in the post for Verizon only, whereas the other Verizon phones under ebay also indicate PagePlus. Any reason why the iPhone wouldn't work on PagePlus also?

    1. The Verizon iPhone 5s can be used on PagePlus.

  7. Is the Verizon Moto E LTE as easily bootloader-unlocked/rooted as the Sprint version?

    1. No, the Verizon Moto E is not rootable and its bootloader is not unlockable.

  9. Got an AT&T Microsoft Lumia 640 on black Friday deals at Best Buy, got it unlocked on Ebay, stuck my Ultra Mobile sim into it, and it intermittently shows sim not valid. Changed sims twice and the same problem. Anyone on here experiencing the same problem? the phone is definitely unlocked, since I used my wife's T-Mobile sim and it works fine.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have the exact same problem with an H2O sim, my phone is NOT unlocked, works fine with AT&T sim.

      Delete
    2. If you powered up the 640 before inserting a MVNO SIM, the phone may reset your APN to AT&T APN ' phone '. Our APN settings menu was grayed out, could not be edited. Our carrier had to push sms with their carrier APNs. Save, reboot and data and mms worked again. AT&T had unlocked the new 640 earlier, but that did not make a difference.

  10. Why is activating a new sprint, boost, or virgin mobile phone considered a loophole?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sprint's policy is that prepaid phones have to be used for 12 months on the Sprint prepaid service they were sold for before they can be used on a MVNO.

      Delete
    2. New Sprint network phones are sold intended for use on that Sprint brand only (i.e.; Sprint Prepaid, Boost, Virgin Mobile) for at least 12 months.
Thus far, other commenters here and on other sites have reported activating new, never-used phones on MVNOs.

  14. Frys has got Samsung Galaxy Alpha SM-G850 White Unlocked Smartphone for $99. Is this a good deal?

    http://www.frys.com/product/8377857?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There are at least five versions of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha SM-G850. Unfortunately Frys doesn't say which one they are offering.

For US use you want the SM-G850A AT&T model or the SM-G850T T-Mobile model. If Frys is selling either of those for $99.99 that's a great deal for a phone with a Snapdragon 801, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB internal memory and a 12 MP camera. There's 4.7" 1280 x 720 screen. The battery is removable but there's no memory card slot.

The (SM-SM-G850L, SM-G850K and SM-G850S) are missing two or more of the US LTE bands and there's generally no warranty for phones sold out of market.

  15. For RingPlus, the used Boost Moto G (about $30) is still the best deal for the money & still a better made phone (720p ips display) than the strangely popular Moto E

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. for ringplus IMO you are much better off with a device that supports Spark LTE. The volt for $40 is IMO the best deal for the money. I've had both on ringplus. the data is night and day better on the volt.

  16. I'm predicting the original Moto X will soon be the best budget deal around for any carrier. As for 5" plus screens, The LG G2 cannot be beat! This is a 1080p phone for sometimes $60.

    1. Late prediction, but still true.
      I bought a Motorola-refurbished Moto X last July for $99.99.
Dennis made the 2013 Moto X a Sunday best buy around that same time, I believe.
Good used Moto X 2013 models sell for $80~130, and are still a good choice.

    1. How is the current Moto E LTE inferior to its predecessor, the first gen Moto E?. The second gen has a better screen and processor, bigger, longer lasting battery, more internal storage and adds an SD card slot and camera autofocus.

The 1st gen Moto G 3G, is a great phone for 3G-only Verizon MVNO plans. But the lack of LTE is a significant downside otherwise.

      Delete
  20. The Moto G stills has a superior 720p IPS screen.

  21. Dennis: Last time you have mentioned Galaxy J2 wont work in USA with LTE. However I went ahead and bought the phone this week. Interestingly, I am seeing LTE on my screen. Not able to understand how. Assuming it works fine then its an awesome basic phone for $130 (available in jet.com with 20% discount) for those who are looking 4.7" form factor.

As per details in Amazon, here are the frequencies:
    4G: LTE 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. LTE bands should be specified using band numbers. 800, 850, etc are frequency ranges and are ambiguous because each contains multiple incompatible bands.

It looks like you got lucky because one of the bands in the 850 range is band 5 which AT&T uses in some markets. None of the other frequency ranges you listed contain any bands used by a US GSM carrier.
