Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week Jan 10 - Jan 16

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post listing the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the brand new,
Boost Mobile Apple iPhone 5s 16 GB for $149.99 on the Boost Mobile site. This is the best price I've seen yet for a new 5s. Boost's regular price is $299.99 from Boost and Apple still sells the 16 GB 5s for $450. I don't expect this price to last long so jump on it now if you're interested. Update: the Boost Mobile iPhone 5s has sold out.

Launched in 2013, the 5s was the first iPhone a fingerprint sensor. It also introduced the 64 bit A7 processor which Apple claims is twice as fast as the iPhone 5's A6, Other notable specs include a 4 inch 640x1136 IPS screen and 8 MP main and 1.2 MP front cameras

  1. I bought the Boost iPhone 5S this morning - could not resist at this price. Gold color was already sold out.
Does anyone know whether it will activate with a Sprint MVNO, like the Boost iPhone 6 can?

    1. I suspect it will work on RingPlus and Ting.

    2. Wow, that is the best price I've ever come across for a brand new iphone 5s! $149?!

Even better than Cricket's sale of $199 last month ... those sold out fast at that price so I wouldn't hesitate on this promo.

    3. Have the Devices purchased Directly from Boost already had their ESN re-SKUed for Boost service?

      Delete
    4. As far as I understand Sprint's subsidiaries, Virgin and Boost, don't function the same as their other MVNOs so I believe the SKUs are all centralized as "Sprint" SKUs until you activate them (and partner them with a sim for LTE devices) with either Virgin or Boost. But don't quote me on that.

  2. I just bought two. 1 Sliver and 1 Gray together with tax came out to be 325. I plan to flip it on Craigslist and Ebay for at least for 250 or more.

  3. Does anybody know if the GSM side is unlocked on The iPhone 5S from Boost?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The GSM side is locked. Boost will unlock it after 12 months of service on Boost

      Delete
    2. Dennis, does the actual iPhone need to have been active for 12 months, or can any customer over a year request it?

      Delete
    3. The phone you want to unlock has to be active for 12 months.

      Delete
    4. But if you don't activate it first (best not to even turn it on), you can easily unlock these on eBay for around 20 bucks. I did this with the iphone 6 I bought last year before I activated it on R+, and now all I have to do is pop out the sim and I can be on T-Mobile if I want.

    5. When you activate a new Boost, Sprint Prepaid or Virgin phone with a Sprint MVNO, the MEID is transferred to the MVNO database. There it can be activated by MVNOs except for American Movil divisions, Virgin, Boost and Sprint Prepaid. E.G., the Sprint Prepaid MEID checker says my MEID is not valid because it is in the MVNO DB. I suspect they can move the MEID to their (or the Sprint postpaid?) DB for activation, but I'm not going to try this.

      Delete
    6. UPDATE: MVNO DB and SPCS DB used to be the terms used; I don't know whether they were actually separate databases. A Sprint store manager enters a DB called DNA2 to add or designate MEIDs. Some managers have added MEID for compatible Verizon phones like the iPhone 5C, 5S and 6 series to DNA2 for customers.

  4. Typo: Last Virgin Mobile iPhone should read 6S Plus, not 6 Plus.

  7. I am nervous about buying a Tracfone from Frys.com. Can anyone vouch that the phones have all barcodes scanned at time of sale and activate when received at home? I don't live near a Fry's so don't want to have to return the phone.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I had bad experience with Fry's local store. Their system doesn't enforce scanning of serial numbers, unlike Walmart or Bestbuy. Don't know about frys.com though.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Even BestBuy has problems with not scanning at least for pickup orders I think because the At&t device unlock page won't recognize the IMEI of the flip phone I bought for my friend.

      Delete
  9. Guessing most of these won't even be activated on Boost, making these deals few and farther in between, ebay/craigslist hoarders.

    1. Mother Sprint could block them from being used on any Sprint MVNO without doing time on Boost first. It would be easy but they don't any more. I wonder if they're backdoor subsidizing R+

      Delete
  10. Changing an ESN is an awful idea. Besides the obvious reason - one can never factory reset a phone safely, nor switch accounts safely and there is a good chance that full functionality (mms, LTE) is bye bye

    1. The deals are:
      - An LG F3 and 3 months service on the $30 1500 min, 1500 txt, 1 GB plan for $59.
      - An HTC Desire 510 and 3 months $40 on the unlimited T&T 2 GB plan for $99.
      - All plans half price for the 1st 2 months.

  16. Not heard much about TPO. I went in and put in my zip code. It said no coverage. Hmmm. I wondered if it was on a tiny carrier like US Cellular or T-Mobile. Researched, it's on Sprint. Sprint? I've had Sprint coverage in my area for years.

However, Sprint's coverage is rather small nationwide. Apparently. TPO is running on an even smaller subdivision/subset of the Sprint network.

  26. Just saw the TracFone LG Power at Walmart for $19.96. A steal, I think.

Experiencing the bad volume placement that many LG's have first hand. Yeah, it's a design blunder and discourages use of the volume buttons (and of the badly placed power button in the center).

Seems quite a fine low-end phone otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. it may pass esn check, but u cant activate on ring plus.

      Delete
    2. Why not? The sole purpose of RingPlus' MEID (not ESN, which was retired years ago) checker is to validate whether a phone can be activated on RingPlus.

      Delete
    3. New Boost and Virgin iPhone 5S that pass the MEID check on RingPlus will activate. If you are swapping it with for an active iPhone 5C, 5S or 6 series on your RingPlus line and you want to use your current SIM, do NOT enter the ICCID/SIM serial number on the RingPlus device swap page. Just enter the new phone's MEID.
Otherwise the swap will fail. If you try to edit and just enter the MEID at that stage, the swap fails again. You will have to clear the browser cache and maybe log in again to make the swap.
This procedure also should be used if you are swapping on a Verizon 5C or 5S to replace an existing 5C or 5S and want to use the active SIM.

  33. You will need either the 426c or the 436c nano sim for these phones to activate (they're the universal virgin, boost, sprint sims). The 426c is on sale for only $2.99 right now at BestBuy. Also try leaving off the last digit of the IMEI when activating

    1. I believe the OP purchased a Boost iPhone 5s on the Boost site which comes with the required SIM. His problem is that the Boost site isn't accepting his 'esn'. Modern phones don't have ESNs. He should be entering the MEID. If that's what he's entering, the problem is on Boost end and only Boost can fix it. I would not recomend waiting 72 hours for a call back. Keep calling Boost until you get a rep who has a clue or is willing to connect your to a supervisor who does.

    2. Sprint has at least 3 SIM SKUs for the iPhone 5S, 6, 6S. Part numbers SIMGLW416C and SIMOLW416C are sometimes used for the 5S and 6.

      Delete
    3. Even though i bought it through boost website it came without a sim. Yes i was entering the MEID. THE meid was not accepting when i try to swap the phone. They called me back within an hour and told they will send a sim and told me to call them after i received the sim. I had a sprint sim but they said it won't work with it.

      Delete
    4. I went to BestBuy.com but nothing comes up under those SIM numbers on their site. I also bought a Boost 5s thru boost.com and it also didn't come with the SIM card so ended up calling Boost and they'll be mailing me a SIM within 10 days. I'm using my Nexus 5 on RingPlus with a Sprint Micro-SIM but I keep hearing that you can't use the SIM in the Boost iPhone 5S....why not???

      Delete
    5. There are at least 4 Sprint part numbers that work with iPhone 5S, and at least 3 part numbers for the 6 series. Sprint uses a separate part for the iPhone 5 that only works in that iPhone. Why? Only Sprint knows. The senior techs in the local repair center at my Sprint regional office can't even search their system for a part number. They can only search by phone model, which then lists workable Sprint SKUs, not part numbers. They only way they can find a specific part is to search the whole storage bin, and they don't like to do that. Especially since all of the SKUs work for activation on a Sprint plan. Next time I'll bring a box of doughnuts.

      Delete
    6. I guess Sprint don't wanna make it easy for anyone Sim-wise or phone-wise (CDMA). As far as I know, once a phone is GSM SIM-unlocked and it supports the band you can just pop in any GSM SIM and it will work. Guess I was expecting the same with their CDMA? SIMs. Sort of good news is that RingPlus has added SIMs to their store and it will tell you which SIM works with which phone.

      Delete
    7. Older Sprint and Verizon phones didn't have SIM cards ( before LTE ) and you could ONLY use them on that carrier. I think both have realized customers want to have flexible phones ( able to use it with another carrier ) and phone manufacturers don't want to make several models of the same phone for cost efficiency. Ting also sell CMDA SIM cards on their website at a reasonable price and make it easy to pick the right one for your phone.

  34. For my fellow Nexus 6 lovers, the 426c sim works perfectly with Ting and RingPlus...(the real deal of the week is the now $249 brand new Nexus 6 on Amazon).
