  3. Hey Dennis is the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 factory unlock at Walmart. I know the postpaid one is but I don't know if the prepaid is unlock right from the box.

  4. What's a good choice for a small, light, budget phone? It doesn't have to be a smartphone but GSM is preferred.

I'm looking for something easy to carry and not a big loss if it drops or goes for a swim. There's times I want to be able to receive calls and SMS but don't need or want to carry around my Galaxy Note 5.

    3. AT&T ZTE Z222 flip phone $9.99 at Walmart. 92 gm weight, the RAZR was 97 gm. Shorter and narrower than the RAZR but not as thin.

    4. Thanks! That looks like something I can toss in a pocket and forget it's there until I get a call. Will AT&T unlock this free like they do for the Android Go Phones? Or is the unlock cheap? I will forward my main number to my Truphone SIM.

    5. As far as I know AT&T will unlock the Z222 under the same conditions as any of their phones. If not unlock codes were under $5 for ZTE's the last time I checked.

    7. Thank you for the suggestion. There are no Kmart stores within 100 miles of here, according to their store locator, but for people near one that looks like an inexpensive option to put on a free R+ plan as a knockaround phone.

I'm going to see if the nearby Walmart has a Go Phone Z222 in stock. Thanks to Dennis and everybody else for the suggestions.

    1. how does the Z max2 (other than having a slightly smaller screen and better internal memory (same if comparing a T-mobile version)really differ from the LG stylo that Cricket had as $50 switcher promo?
Stylo has stylus aka Note knockoff perhaps...
is the LG going to be more refined and reliable or has ZTE improved their offerings till it really makes no difference.
almost got the LG stylo but cricket didn't extend their promo offer into the new year.
anybody lived with either of these enough to have an opinion if there's a difference that matters?

      Delete
    2. I have both. Got the Zmax2 when it was $100 and the Stylo during the Cricket swicher prom. The LG Stylo is a better phone. The maximum earpieces volume on the Zmax2 is a little too low (for me), the phone seems to stutter , and the camera is not so good. My experience with the ZTE phones is that their specs look great but actual performance is another thing. However they are inexpensive and may work or for some people.

    3. I agree about the low volume and stuttering. Low volume is prime reason I returned mine.

about the info about band 12 being used by at&t
guess that also means that T-mobile unlocked phones with band 12 will work with a_t_&_t sims just as well and that t-mobile customers can use new unlocked AT&T phones if they have band 12 in their region.

    5. thanks for sharing the comparison between the ZTE max - and the LG stylo sounds like the LG is going to be worth waiting for another sale sewhere (by checking this site!)
Cricket is also supposed to be getting the ZTE grand X 3 for $130 may have to see what the reviews look like on that one or another reasonably price big screen!

  12. If Im reading phonescoop correctly the Zmax 2 lacks Att LTE band 17 and Tmobile HSPA 1700/2100. Since Tmobile has refarmed some spectrum I'm uncertain how big a deal this really is

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The lack of band 17 1700 HSPA are non-issues.

Band 12 includes band 17. To enable roaming between AT&T, T-Mobile and regional operators AT&T is configuring its towers to identify its former band 17 as both band 12 and 17. New AT&T phones support band 12 rather than 17.

I think T-Mobile has pretty much completed its migration of HSPA to 1900.

  13. I am interested in the Verizon LG G Vista LTE Phablet. It is on sale at Best Buy and Walmart. BTW Walmart has lowered the price now under Best Buy's price. What is Walmart, Best Buy policy on this Verizon phone? I would be interested in putting it right to another MVNO like StraightTalk. Speed isn't an issue I just need Verizon coverage in an area that has spotty coverage by other carriers.
On a side note, Have you ever thought to add links where it opens a new page instead of it taking a user away from the page?
As always good reporting especially on the Sunday morning phone selections.

    1. What do you mean by policy? Return policy, price matching policy or something else? I don't know the details of either off hand.

I consider forcing links to open in a new tab anti-user as it forces my choice on the user rather than letting the user choose when the link should open.

You can easily open any link in a new tab by middle clicking on Windows or Linux, Cmd-click in OSx Safari or Ctrl-Click in ChromeOS.

      Delete
    2. My two cents: I agree anon, clicking the link and having another tab open is the preferable default. It is a minor point but I guess I'm not the only one. Thx for your great work Dennis!

    1. That depends on whether you want a better screen and camera or faster data
The Moto E has a 4.5" 960x540px screen, 5 MP camera without flash and LTE.
The $99 version of the Moto G has a 5" 1280 x 720px screen, 8 MP camera with flash and no LTE.

  18. @Dennis Bournique:

In your article above about the AT&T ZTE Zmax 2, you missed an interesting part of the news story: not only is that phone on sale for $79.99 at Best Buy (which you reported), but also the regular price of that phone has been lowered from $129.99 to $99.99 (which you did not report). In fact, your article incorrectly says the regular price is $129.99.
