Lycamobile seems to have finally implemented the pay as you go price increase they announced nearly 2 years ago. Multiple users are reporting on HowardForums and elsewhere that they are being charged at 5¢ per minute for calls instead of 2¢/min. they had been paying up to now.
Even with the price increase Lycamobile is still probably the least expensive way to park a lightly used phone number. Probably the best feature of Lycamobile for light users is that regular top-ups aren't needed. Funds added to a Lycamobile pay as you go account never expire as long as a non-toll-free call is made or received or a text is sent at least every 90 days. That means it costs less than 20¢ a year to keep a Lycamobile SIM active! Other Lycamobile perks are free incoming texts (outgoing texts are 4¢ each) and free calls to toll free (800 etc.) numbers.
Lycamobile is also a good option if you make international calls occasionally. Lycamobile pay per minute international rates are among the lowest of any provider. Sample pay as you go rates to call mobile phones include: Canada 6¢; Mexico 8¢; China 6¢; UK 10¢ and the Philippines 14¢. Lycamobile supports international direct dialing.
Although it's not really a downside, Lycamobile's plan is a bit of a secret. It's not mentioned anywhere on the Lycamobile site so you have to be in the know to even sign up for it.
New customers can get the pay as you go plan by activating a Lycamobile SIM and adding a $10 top up. Lycamobile doesn't make it easy to order a SIM without a plan and charges $7 shipping. It's easier and cheaper order a 99¢ Lycamobile SIM from eBay and a $10 Lycamobile airtime PIN from Callingmart.
Current Lycamobile monthly plan users can switch to the pay as you go plan by adding a $10 top up and letting their monthly plan expire.
