Lycamobile Ups PayGo Voice Cost From 2¢ to 5¢ Per Minute

Lycamobile SIM
T-Mobile MVNO Lycamobile seems to have finally implemented the pay as you go price increase they announced nearly 2 years ago. Multiple users are reporting on HowardForums and elsewhere that they are being charged at 5¢ per minute for calls instead of 2¢/min. they had been paying up to now.

Even with the price increase Lycamobile is still probably the least expensive way to park a lightly used phone number. Probably the best feature of Lycamobile for light users is that regular top-ups aren't needed. Funds added to a Lycamobile pay as you go account never expire as long as a non-toll-free call is made or received or a text is sent at least every 90 days. That means it costs less than 20¢ a year to keep a Lycamobile SIM active!  Other Lycamobile perks are free incoming texts (outgoing texts are 4¢ each) and free calls to toll free (800 etc.) numbers.

Lycamobile is also a good option if you make international calls occasionally. Lycamobile pay per minute international rates are among the lowest of any provider. Sample pay as you go rates to call mobile phones include: Canada 6¢; Mexico 8¢; China 6¢; UK 10¢ and the Philippines 14¢. Lycamobile supports international direct dialing.

As with every provider and plan there are some downsides to Lycamobile pay as you go. Rural users may find the coverage (T-Mobile native network with no roaming) inadequate. A big disadvantage for many potential users is that data and MMS are not available, only talk and text.

Although it's not really a downside, Lycamobile's plan is a bit of a secret. It's not mentioned anywhere on the Lycamobile site so you have to be in the know to even sign up for it.

New customers can get the pay as you go plan by activating a Lycamobile SIM and adding a $10 top up. Lycamobile doesn't make it easy to order a SIM without a plan and charges $7 shipping. It's easier and cheaper order a 99¢ Lycamobile SIM from eBay and a $10 Lycamobile airtime PIN from Callingmart.

Current Lycamobile monthly plan users can switch to the pay as you go plan by adding a $10 top up and letting their monthly plan expire.

  3. Who has the cheapest Paygo talk now that Lyca has raised their rates?

  4. Don't do it. Lycamobile is a terrible company. Search for reviews and you will see.

    1. Alternative? Lyca is probably the last very low cost to maintain TMO MNVO. (ie: $0.20/yr)

    2. I've had less problems w/Lyca than I ever had w/America Movil owned "brands".

Lyca is not great but at least things get done eventually, heaven help you trying to get anything done, let alone done right, ever, w/America Movil.

    3. Alternatives to Lyca: truphone (incoming calls & texts free) with ringplus and google voice combination.

    4. +1 I use both. Truphone app for WiFi and data calls, displays my Truphone sim number. Vonage app for Ringplus WiFi and data calls; displays my home number.

  5. I've had Lyca for a year as backup phone and it's been great. Total cost: $2.36. Talked 118 minutes. Even at the new rate, I can't think of any less expensive non-VOIP alternative.

    1. RingPlus free plans are less expensive cellular alternatives to Lycamobile.
Free after any initial top-up, only if the plan required one.

    2. In the use case you replied to suggesting Ring+ that person could go 5+ years on Lyca, even at 0.05/min. for the cost of one mandatory R+ initial top up fee. Also T-mo vs. Sprint networks.

    3. Apparently you don't know about the Ringplus Totally Free plan with no initial top up. Or the Pepper plan with only a $5 top up. Free is always cheaper.

  6. Lyca sucks. I used to use them to call international at 5c/min. Only when I used google hangouts to call international realized Lyca was shorting me on min..

  7. Does anybody know if Lyca supports band 12 and volte?

    1. Lycamobile has no say in what works and what doesn't on T-Mobile's network. If your phone gets LTE and VoLTE on T-Mobile it should also get it on Lycamobile monthly plans. There's no data on Lycamobile PayGo so no LTE and thus no VoLTE on PayGo.

    2. Yes, Lycamobile does support band 12 and VOLTE provided your phone has both the capabilities. I am using both on my Moto X Pure XT1575.
