Prepaid Phones on Sale This Week - April 10 - April 16

Microsoft Lumia 640
Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post listing the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is once again the AT&T GoPhone Microsoft Lumia 640 Windows Phone, which is on sale for for just $29.99 (reg $79.99) at BestBuy.

Windows Phone doesn't get much love these days, even from Microsoft, but it has its merits. The Windows Phone user interface is easy to learn and the Windows OS temds to run more smoothly than Android on low end hardware.

The Lumia 640 best feature is probably it's 8 MP camera with auto-focus and flash. It's probably the best camera to be found on any sub $100 phone. Other specs include a 1.2 Ghz quad core Snapdragon 400 processor, 5 inch 1280x720px HD Gorilla Glass 3 screen, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal memory, support for SD cards up to 128 GB and a removable battery. There's a 0.9 MP front-facing camera for your selfies. The Lumia 640 ships with Windows Phone 8.1. It's supposed to receive an update to Windows 10 eventually.

The GoPhone Lumia 640 works out of the box on AT&T, Cricket and all AT&T MVNOs. If unlocked it also works on T-Mobile and T-Mobile MVNOs.

  1. Boost Alcatel Elevate is actually $39.99 at Target. Just got one and activated on TPO Mobile (before 4/17!). Works great!

    1. Post updated, thanks. Can you tell us much in taxes and fees TPO charged and on which plan and state?

    2. $14 plan (with auto-pay). Taxes/fees $1.02 for the state of Nevada. Total $15.02 for 1000 min. / Unlimited texts / 500 MB data.

Although you can get almost the same thing for free on Ring+'s Michelangelo plan, I prefer to pay because the latency on Ring+ can get pretty annoying. It's a good value, but I only recommend them for light usage and definitely not for a main line for average to heavy users.

  2. A Better Deal on the new Nexus 5 is this 32GB white version on eBay for $10 less than the 16GB listed as a best buy above:

  3. Correction/Typo: The black Nexus 5 listed in today's post for eBay is actually a 32gb model, not 16GB.

  5. wow, the 640 looks great, but whoops, its windows. awe shucks. cant use 80% of the apps I need. $10 would be fair and use it as something other than a phone (gps nav, or mp3 player, camera, or something fun).

    1. My experience too. Some of the app categories I need simply aren't present for Windows Phone, and the selections are meager (low chance of finding a good app) for most of the rest of it.

I would imagine it's real swell for Office stuff, though, even if not anything else.

And yes you are correct: it is pretty much a dumbphone with premium hardware.

    2. My Windows Phone app experience on the L640 has been good. The only app I wanted that was not available was Snapchat. There were about 700,000 apps available as of last Fall, and with Windows 10 Phone coming out this Q2 from carriers, the number of Universal apps should increase faster.

    2. So far so good. Speedtest result was about 15 megabits download at home. Seems like a good backup to my T-Mobile tethering. Relatively cheap way to access Verizon (prepaid) data when needed

  10. Will we any of the carrier branded models with Android Marshmellow anytime soon ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All four major carriers have started pushing updates to recent flagships like the Samsung S6, Note 5 and LG G4. Carrier branded mid-range and entry level devices are rarely updated especially by Verizon and T-Mobile.

      Delete
    2. I don't expect updates on lower end carrier brand phones but I wonder when they will start shipping them with Marshmallow.

      Delete
    3. Cricket's Samsung Galaxy Amp Prime runs Marshmallow and Boost Mobile's Samsung Galaxy J7 which launches April 18 does too.

      Delete
    4. HTC announced they are updating the 626 and 626S entry/midrange phones to Android M.

      Delete
    5. One might expect a lack of phone updates from cut-rate carriers like T-Mobile, but it's inexcusable that a premium carrier like Verizon doesn't provide updates to its phones.

      Delete
    6. Verizon does not care as much about retaining or increasing customers as they do about maximizing revenue. A "premium" carrier that costs a big premium. And by far in last place for number of prepaid customers.
With all the bloatware Vzw loads on phones, certification of new OS is just too expensive and time-consuming for them to be bothered. Especially since they think they own you, and that you will just buy a new phone.

  11. Dennis....Do you think the SIM card is attached to "goPhone Phone" or once activated, the SIM card can be swapped to others phone? Thank you

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. GoPhone SIMs can be freely swapped between phones.

      Delete
    2. When you purchase a new Go Phone, instructions in the packaging tell you to insert your previous sim card if already a customer.

    3. Sorry, about a week behind in my web reading. Purchased this Lumia 640 at BB as a "curiosity". As indicated by the above review, took At&t sim out BEFORE turning phone on, put Tracfone sim in and voilà!...immediately got cellular service. Like the camera and responsiveness NOT the OS.

  12. Good new but it is up to the carriers to decide to push out the updates (along with their bloatware ). Uunfortunately most carrier sell phones with locked bootloaders so there is no way to manually udpate the OS. It will be interesting to see with carriers offer updates to these HTV models. Maybe when inventories of the phones wiht 5.x is sold out, maybe the carriers will offer them with with Marhsmallow /6.x .

  13. A lot of sites are recommending the honor 5x but this site doesn't talk much about unlocked phones. What do y'all think about these Chinese unlock phones?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't used it, but the Huawei Honor 5X appears to be an excellent phone for the price.

It's hard to generalize about phone manufacturers as they all have their occasional lemons. US market phones from major Chinese brands like ZTE, Huawei and Alcatel are usually OK and warranty support is available. I'd stay away from unknown brands and international models which may lack US bands and/or a US warranty.

      Delete
    2. Big fan of unlocked phones. Own both the Honor 5x and a BLU VIVO XL. For the $, these devices are hard to beat. Expecting Android M update on 5x by end of May (already rolling out to some models now).

  14. Huawei tech support and warranty coverage is disappointing. Asus sells a much better unlocked phone for the same $200.

  17. Can one buy a CDMA LTE Tracfone with minutes included (only low end phones available) and then switch the SIM Card to a good unlocked Verizon phone without dealing with Tracfone's horrendous service reps? Or is the original LTE SIM card "married" to the first Tracfone phone? If you start with a Verizon unlocked phone and the TF CDMA Sim card kit, can the CDMA Sim Card be moved from phone to phone without calling the TF service reps?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nope! Tracfone-phones have non-removable sims. BUT, you can easily transfer that Tracfone-phone to an unlocked Verizon phone with the insertion of a Tracfone sim card available for just $1.00 at Best Buy, etc.& going on the Tracfone-Website. No need to call customer-no-service.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Not true. Except for 3G CDMA phones which don't use SUMs, TracFone SIMs are removable although not all can be swapped between phones.

TracFone feature phone SIMs are locked to the phone they come with and can't be used in any other phone

The SIMs in TracFone smartphones can be swapped to another TracFone or BYOP that is compatible with the donor SIM's network (AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile). Do not sell, give away or reactivate the donor phone or TracFone will deactivate the original SIM.

TracFone BYOP SIMs can be freely swapped.

      Delete
    2. Wait a second Dennis. You mean if I remove my TracFoneVerizonLTE SIM from a <> and put into Phone XYZ, but then put new TracFoneVerizonLTE SIM into that <> to transfer another TracFoneVerizon3G # (MotoE).....Tracfone will deactivate the SIM currently in phone XYZ ????? (MotoE is a TracFoneMotoE, but <> & phone XYZ are unlocked BYOPs).

      Delete
    3. If you move the SIM from a TracFone branded phone to another phone and then try to reactivate the first phone TracFone will deactivate the original SIM and send you a new SIM.

To avoid this use BYOP SIMs for non-TracFone branded phones and keep the original TracFone SIMs in TracFone branded phones.

    1. The Express Prime and the J3 appear to share the same chassis, screen, camera and battery byt the J3 has Samsung Knox enterprise security which lets businesses remotely configure and control phones they issue to employees.

Processors are different too, the Express Prime uses Exynos 3475 and the J3 has a Snapdragon 410

  20. Best Buys in Louisville, KY are selling the Boost Moto E for $9.99 with activation or $29.99 without.

I understand Saturday is the deadline for new Sprint prepaid phones to be activated on MVNOs like Ringplus.

Can Ringplus activate the Moto E before the 17th if Best Buy activates it in store or am I better off paying the extra $20? Thanks.
