  1. While $200 may be a deal for this particular phone, I can't say $200 for ANY phone would ever be classified as a deal to me and/or many, perhaps most average users.

    1. Those are decent specs.

And I'm not sure what the "average user" is, but with hundreds of millions of smart phones costing far more than $200 shipping in the previous calendar year, something costing $200 might well be a great savings and deal.

    2. Hard to beat $20 zte speed and another $25 on ringplus before the wait period restrictions.

    3. I guess it depends on whether you live in an American suburb or an African village. In the United States and Canada it's common to see iPhones, Samsungs, and other phones that cost more than $200. In fact, many of the phones cost much more than $200, so much more that their owners finance them over two years.

      Delete
    4. To the poster on the zte speed, it doesn't matter anymore. Now we have a 6 months use policy so the cheap sprint\boost\virgin phones are all relegated to just hanging on the shelf...

      Delete
    5. Yes, the new restrictions on Sprint phone seem to be a problem. But the cheap phone and services are very usuable.

      Delete
    6. Re: zte speed was $9.99 last week. hold out unless you have to have it this week for double the price. pretty dismal display, but worth the $9.99 tag...

    4. Dennis, do you mean that New Boost and Virgin iPhones still activate on RingPlus?

  4. ATT GoPhone ZTE ZMax2 is $59.99 certified like-new. Choose the $45 plan but at checkout click on Remove and delete the airtime card. You will then pay for just the phone. When it comes in, pop in YOUR sim card.

    1. Don't forget to get it unlocked via ebay for $3. then your good to go for all ATT and T-Mobile..

    2. A few glitches with the zmax2, thus far: can't toggle mobile data off (known issue with ATT); haven't found root access yet; can't disable preloaded google apps as on other zte phones; space bar works only intermittently in landscape mode. haven't checked yet on LTE bands to see if it would work seemless on TM...

    3. Would really love to see marshmellow on the zmax2, but not going to happen until root and flash some one-off ROM if someone makes one. having some control of app permissions is critical for some level of privacy with all these spying apps.

      Delete
    4. Gates Jr's Debloater (free) can disable any app (including ones that will break your phone if disabled), root is not required but a Windows PC is.

To disable cellular data go to Settings > Data usage > Cellular data on/off toggle.

      Delete
    5. The free AppOps app in the Play Store lets you control app permissions in Lollipop without root.

      Delete
    6. thanks for the tip on AppOps, but I tried 4 different AppOps apps from playstore, and none worked on lollipop 5.1 without root on this zmax2. I did get one to work on pre-android 4.4.2, which is great, but doesn't help me on the zmax2. Haven't tried the complex procedure you linked for Debloater yet, but I'm suspecting the crux might be finding the driver to get the zmax2 talking with the pc... kinda a mut point though if I can't get AppOps to work though as that's a deal breaker for me as well.

  5. I really thought the LG Tribute 5 (Boost) for 49.99 at bestbuy was gonna be the deal of the week. Also, the HTC 625 Desire for Cricket, also at bestbuy, is a decent deal.

    2. I've had the ZF Laser now since Christmas using on T-Mobile. Coverage is excellent, first phone I can use INSIDE my home. Also used all over southern Ontario and Quebec recently. Don't let lack of Band 12 stop you, this is a great phone and great carrier (using prepaid, $40/month, 3G data, Music Freedom)

    1. I don't have the Zmax 2 with me currently, but I thought there was a toggle to turn cellular data on or off in the notification pull down. If you pull down from the top of the screen is there the up and down arrows to change cellular data?

    2. Page 10 of the manual shows the data switch.

    3. I see the data switch. I also see it in the widget I put on the main page. Its always lit up, and when I tap on it, it will never turn off. maybe fault of the widget, i don't really know for sure, but I read on XDA that ATT wont let you toggle data off, so this is what I believe I'm experiencing. maybe a bad unit? not sure, but a handset where I can't toggle data on and off, is a deal breaker to me.

  9. On BYOP Ringplus, remember to buy a sim card also.

    1. New Sprint phones come with the necessary SIMs. Sprint SIMs are supposed to stay with the phone they came with, even if the phone is sold. Many sellers don't know that and remove the SIM, in which case do you need to buy a SIM. You also need to buy a Sprint SIM for non-Sprint iPhones and Nexus phones.

    2. Interesting article. Sometimes the smartest phone to use is not a smartphone. The SpareOne phone works on one AA battery that stays charged up to 15 years when not in use, operates from -22 to 140 degrees F (don't try that with your pocket computer), works inside its waterproof bag, and has panic alerts and location services. It also gives you access to the least expensive low-use AT&T plan, only $25 for up to a year of service.
