Prepaid Phones On Sale This Week May 15 - May 21

Welcome to Prepaid Phone News' regular Sunday Prepaid Phones on Sale this Week post listing the best current US prepaid and unlocked phone deals.

This week's Deal of the Week is the Unlocked Moto X 32 GB (2014, 2nd edition) LTE Android phone for $149.99 with promo code SPRINGISHERE on Motorola's Moto Maker website. Moto Maker lets you customize your phone by selecting different colors for the front. back and trim. Leather or wooden backs are available for an extra $25.

The deal ends Tuesday May 17, but is likely to sell out long before then. Update 8 PM PT 5/15 the Moto X seems to be going in and out of stock, keep trying if the site tells you it's out of stock.

The Moto X was Motorola's flagship when it launched in September of 2014 at a price of $499.99 for the 32 GB model. Even today the two year old Moto X still has better specs than any recent sub $200 phone. Case in point it runs the Snapdragon 801 processor which benchmarks 20 to 40 percent higher than the Snapdrogon 615 found it the likes of  Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 or the ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser.

The Moto X 2nd edition has been upgraded to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Specifications include a 5.2" 1920×1080px Super AMOLED screen, 2 GB of RAM, NFC and 13 MB main and 2 MP front-facing cameras. It supports quad band GSM, penta-band HSPA and  LTE bands 2/3/4/5/7/17 making it best suited for use on AT&T and AT&T MVNOs. It's unlocked so it will work just about anywhere in the world and on T-Mobile although it lacks support for T-Mobile LTE band 12.

  7. Nice BYOD deal on Cricket. Buy the LG Spree for 99 cents, get free 2-day shipping, throw away the Spree, use the SIM card in your phone = save $9 on buying the SIM card alone on their website.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Spree is still $41 plus tax when you include the required plan purchase.

      Delete
    2. a sim for byod and the $40 plan is $50 plus tax

so the spree is still $9 cheaper and free activation

  8. Hey guys, I just found a phone on Cricket called the ZTE Grand X 3 for $60. Is this phone better than the ZTE Zmax 2?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The X3 is better, but not by much.

It's also $100 after you add in the required airtime.

Go with the Zmax 2 unless you're switching to Cricket.

However, if you are switching to Cricket, porting in a number lowers the X3's price to $80.

Still, if you won't need an unlock code then you might as well throw in another $10 for the significantly better Idol 3.

      http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/compare.php?p=4948,5037,4745

For $90 you get an octa-core phone with a free sim and 1 month of service.

It doesn't include an SD card, which will run you another $10, but you could do a lot worse for $100.

They also throw in referral and port in bonuses after a few months, which give you $75 to $125 worth of bill credits depending on whether or not you're porting from T-mobile.

Then you can join a group plan for $20/mo and get 2.5GB of data with unlimited talk and text included.

The best part is that you don't even need to switch carriers to get great rates on even more data, since upgrades to 5/10/Unlimited are only $10 each.

That undercuts corresponding plans on both Family Mobile and Metro by $10/mo.

Anyway, Cricket phones tend to be great deals if you plan to use them on Cricket.

However, the required airtime purchase is such a large price increase that the only way to justify it is if you're actually planning to switch over and get all the goodies.

Otherwise, you may wind up paying about the same as you would for a Gophone.

In this case, $105 for a new X3, tax and unlock code is in the same ballpark as $100 for a new Zmax 2.

It's just not worth pissing away the extra $40.

    2. Specs are similar except that the Grand X 3 has a slightly slower Snapdragon 210 processor that the Zmax 2's Snapdragon 400. See Compare Phones (Phone Scoop).

  10. Based on reports of Motos poorly handling warranty claims and widespread performance complaints, I will not even consider buying any new Moto products from Lenovo owned Moto.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agreed. My buddies Moto failed after 3 months. It was lost in their warranty system for 5 weeks. Shockingly the BBB was able to intervene and get him a new phone. Still he will be out of a phone for nearly 2 months.

  11. What do we know about speedtalk mobile? It appears to be tmo gsm based.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I haven't heard much about SpeedTalk. Their coverage map shows they are on T-Mobile native coverage. PayGo plans might be good for light use but watch out for the $1.49/month fee and rollover balance that expires after six refills. Monthy plans seem overpriced

  12. I just ordered a Moto X Gen 2 for $150. Best smartphone for the money in the world right now. People who say they are afraid to buy because of the recent publicity over warranty issues have lost their perspective. Any complex technical product can have problems, and when you sell millions of phones with tens of thousands of warranty claims, some mistakes will be made. People are human and all machines are not perfect.
Motorola's staff in Chicago is friendly, professional and quick to honor warranties and returns in our family's experience.
Our Acura SUV is one of 51 Million Honda vehicles being recalled because of defective Takata airbags. Parts are not available, and Honda can't say when our car can be fixed, even though we could be killed driving it. We can get a rental sedan, but would have to leave our car on a dealer's lot for months. Does this mean we will never buy a Honda product again? Of course not.
The Moto X Gen 2 is an excellent, well-designed, high-performance phone and an amazing bargain at $150. No fear.

    1. Mistakes are understandable. Moto is giving people the runaround on warranty replacement, so if you get lucky enough to get a latent defect, I wish you well. I'll stick with the more reputable and reliable companies who are doing a better job of standing behind their products.

      Delete
    2. Greedy lawyers file class-action lawsuits every day. They have to prove their case or convince the company it's cheaper to pay them to go away. "Ambulance chaser" John Edwards became a multi-millionaire by distorting, twisting and sometimes lying about medical claims in court to win big settlements, for example. Motorola admits to delays at its repair center that it is resolving, but denies the over-the-top claims in the lawsuit. Finally, if you believe everything you believe on the Internet, you would never find "reputable and reliable companies who are doing a better job of standing behind their products." Just search for "(co. name) cellphone warranty problems" and you'll "stick with" your current cellphone until you get some perspective.

Cheapest what? Any WiFi capable phone can be used to stream music from YouTube, etc. without the phone having to be activated. Use any old WiFi capable phones or tablet you may already own.

  16. Does anyone know anything about the Cricket ZTE Grand X Max 2? (Not to be confused with the Grand X Max+ or the Grand X 3) It's on the Cricket site for $200 but I can't find any info about it anywhere.

    1. Specs are on the ZTE site: ZTE GRAND™ X Max 2 - Smartphone - Products The SOC is MSM8952 which is the Snapdragon 617 so performance should be better than the X Max+'s SD 400 or the Grand X 3's SD 210.

The screen is higher res too; 1080x1920 vs. 720x1280
